Best tips to recover your site from Google Panda and Penguin Updates

What is the diff. between Panda & Penguin?

To keep things simple, here are a few pointers..

Panda:
1) Focuses on putting value on unique & high quality content, and eliminating spam content that provides little to no value. This includes weakly spun content, plagarized content, etc.

Penguin:
1) Focuses on eliminating sites that are over-optimized for keywords. This includes keyword stuffing, & high density of backlinks using main keyword anchor text.

2) Put more restrictions on Exact Match Domain websites, who are purely create just to rank for a particular keyword.

3) Also are more strict on websites with too many affiliate links.

What do you think the real motivations are behind all of the Google going ons? Is Google really feeling sorry for all of the people who have websites that are getting left out?

Or is it about all of the extra ad money they are able to bring in now by leveling the playing field?

Before you jump down my throat in their defense stop and think. Who really benefits from all these changes?

Penguin Civic Classic Book Covers And Inspiration Behind Design (PHOTOS)

We recently interviewed the Penguin Civics Classics book cover series designer about his design choices and inspiration.

In your own words, what is this series about?

In my opinion it's about democracy and freedom, and that's it, really. I'm the worst design b.s.-er of all time, by the way.

What was the mood, theme or specific moment from the texts you depicted with these covers?

They're drawn from American history and there is so much graphic influence from all those early eras, specifically from ephemera. Common Sense, as a pamphlet, was the jumping off point for me for the series design.

I was always attracted to the general style of ephemera, and it seemed to make sense for this series. It's about democracy, and these early American designs were created by the people, very DIY, a lot like street art, that's what Common Sense is.

What inspires your design?

Peter Saville has always been a big influence. It's not a completely straight forward influence as far as imagery goes but I think that a lot of what he did was draw from little pieces of the past and bring it to the present to make it feel modern. All his Factory Records work, anything for New Order and Joy Division, the posters and album covers, there is an elegance to those pieces that is hard to grasp in a way. You look at them on the surface and then look at them for awhile and realize the way imagery and type are so well put together, so dynamic.

For Penguin Civic Classics, it was also about digging back and looking at what was around from these specific historic times. Posters from the Civil War are incredible; the typography used, obviously, the Declaration of Independence itself. The "Join, or Die" snake was designed by Ben Franklin, which goes to show how talented he was. It appeared about 20 years before the revolution but it was in a newspaper that he printed and he's credited as the designer for it.

What was the biggest challenge in designing these covers?

Supreme Court Decisions was the last one to include in the series and at that point, I was wondering how it was going to work and keep going. I had a lot of imagery, old 18th and 19th century political art work and ephemera from pamphlets and ads that were all very patriotic and pulling pieces from that and somehow making six individual pieces of art all work together was the biggest challenge.

Did you consider different ideas or directions for this cover?

I originally was going to do red, white and blue and it seemed too obvious. The fact that these are classic books, it made sense to make them black and white.

While I started to familiarize myself with the texts I came across different images associated with them over and over and I put them in a folder along with patriotic images of American history, which are so rich and varied. I suppose in a subliminal way I channeled some of my early design influences into it, which are punk posters and album covers.

Do you have a favorite amongst them?

Common Sense. It's very punk rock and I always liked Jamie Reid's work for the Sex Pistols. Thinking about "God Save the Queen," ripped over her eyes, in a weird way our Common Sense is almost a tip of the hat to Reid. Also, out of all of the volumes, Common Sense is the one with the most Peter Saville influence too. The spirit of the revolution is very rock n' roll in a way. Common Sense is rock and roll all the way.

What is your previous design experience, with books and otherwise?

I am currently Art Director of Blue Rider Press where I have designed covers for books such as Neil Young's memoir Waging Heavy Peace and Damien Echols' Life After Death. Prior to that I was a designer with
Penguin/Viking and Harper Collins where I have designed covers for Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and Jim Carroll's The Petting Zoo and many more titles.

Are you happy with the final decisions as it ran?

Yes, very much. I got to do uncoated, debossed, covers and had a completely blank canvas for all of them; it's kind of rare to have that.

What is the most important element of a successful book cover?

Getting people to pick it up.

Guest blogging is the first and foremost method of building safe back links. With guest blogging, you will get a natural one way back link to your site and also some free traffic will surely come with it. Usually, when you are guest posting on a blog, you will be allowed to place a link or two pointing back to your blog with appropriate keywords as anchor text in your author bio that appears beneath your article.

Guest posting is not that difficult, though I will admit that it requires some work which can be termed as writing a quality article that you know another blogger will be glad to share with his audience.

After writing your post, the next thing is to find a suitable blog in your niche, a blog that you know will be willing to publish your post and send the blog owner a mail or check out the blog guest posting page (if they have one) for more information about guest blogging on that particular blog. Look for blogs that feature the author bio box, which can give you a chance to earn additional back links to your site.

Blog commenting is my favorite technique for building safe back links to my blogs. I have always been recommending blog commenting to bloggers who are looking to build back links because it has worked for me and it is FREE!!!

When I started my blog in March 2011, my major link building technique was blog commenting and with it I was able to get Google Page Rank of 2 without using any other form of Link Building. Comments left on CommentLuv blogs like this one offer a big advantage because the CommentLuv link will end up sending targeted traffic to your blog as well.

I have discovered blog commenting to be an effective strategy to build back links though it will require time and your patience. Time in the sense that you will have to be visiting blogs in your niche on a daily basis to drop a comment or two and patience in the sense that you will need to read the article on those blogs before you drop your comments.

As you know reading these blog will also help your knowledge, so it’s more like killing two birds with one stone when it comes to blog commenting.

If you are using blog commenting for link building, you should avoid the usual SPAMMY LIKE comments such as: “GREAT POST“, “NICE ARTICLE“, and “NICE BLOG“. Most of the time, these type of comments end up in the trash folder and it will just be like a waste of time and energy on your part.

Apart from the forum signature box, you can also drop links to posts on your blog that can be of assistance or solve a fellow forum member’s problem but don’t turn this into a habit so that you won’t look like a spammer and eventually get banned from the forum.

There are lots of forum boards online; a simple way to find them is to use a search engine like Google. You can get them by using keywords in your niche in the search parameter. For example, I will use something like “Weight loss + Forum” as a search parameter on Google if am in the weight loss niche. So it’s just “your-niche+forum” and hit the search button.
