Kobe Bryant: Raptors Fall Victim To Lakers Amazing Overtime Victory

LOS ANGELES _ The media dining room at Staples Center erupted in a collective roar early Friday night when those affiliated with the Lakers watched on TV as Chicago's Marco Belinelli sank a clutch three-pointer that wound up beating the Utah Jazz.

The door was opened for the Lakers, gearing up to play Toronto, to pull to a half-game behind Utah for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth by going above the .500 mark at 32-31 for the first time since they were 6-5.

There's Marco Belinelli.

And then there's Kobe Bryant.

Playing through a sore right elbow, Bryant made three remarkable three-point shots down the stretch including the most clutch one with 5.5 seconds left in regulation to tie the score _ and the Lakers rallied for a 118-116 overtime victory.

The Lakers were down by five points with 1:42 left in regulation when Bryant hit the first of his late 3-pointers, leaning the wrong way and flat-footed from the right wing. Even though the Lakers' defense couldn't stand up nearly as well as it did in its rally from 25 points down in New Orleans last game, Bryant just scored more.

Dwight Howard fouled Toronto point guard Kyle Lowry on a drive with 8.4 seconds left, and Lowry sank both free throws for a 109-106 Toronto lead. Steve Nash and Bryant did successfully lobby referee Bennie Adams not to call a technical on Howard, who spiked the ball in frustration at his foul call.

Bryant kept it up in overtime, with help from a key Nash 3-point shot. Bryant's dunk with 10.6 seconds left in overtime broke a 115-115 tie and meant after never having any game with at least 40 points and 12 assists, he did it in consecutive games Nos. 1,223 and 1,224.

Bryant finished with 41 points and 12 assists. Howard had 24 points and anchored the defense again.

GASOL START TO RUN

Pau Gasol isn't plotting out a return date yet, but it's probably safe to say he won't be back in the next week for the Lakers.

Gasol reported on his Twitcam video chat Thursday that he ran for the first time in his recovery from the torn plantar fascia in his right foot. Gasol used the Lakers' Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill to run at 65 percent of his body weight and reported that "discomfort was minimal. ... Very encouraging."

The Lakers' plan is for Gasol to ramp up his running gradually, and barring any setbacks, he should be running on the court next week. The plan does not include him beginning basketball activities yet, however, so he is unlikely to return to game action until at least two weeks pass.

Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni knows he'll have another playing-time challenge on his hands when Gasol comes back, considering D'Antoni has de-emphasized Gasol's role this season. Asked about it Friday, D'Antoni smiled and said: "We don't have to go there yet, do we?"

D'Antoni has said repeatedly that he looks forward to Gasol's return, however, as it will certainly improve the team's depth with Gasol offering an outstanding option as Dwight Howard's backup at center.

BRYANT'S OUTPUT

Kobe Bryant has had a lot of great games for the Lakers, but even by his standards his output in the victory in New Orleans on Wednesday night was unique.

Bryant had 42 points and 12 assists and no Laker had put up at least 40 points and 12 assists since Gail Goodrich in 1971. Jerry West had six such games in the regular season and another in the playoffs.

Bryant tried to balance the scoring and passing roles again Friday night against Toronto and succeeded.

He fell off that tightrope more than once. He had eight turnovers in the first three quarters although none in a fourth quarter that saw him dominate the ball again.

Toronto wasn't going to relive Bryant's 81-point game, when Raptors coach Sam Mitchell wasn't aggressive enough in double-teaming Bryant to take the ball out of his hands. Current Toronto coach Dwane Casey, one of the top defensive tacticians in the NBA, had the Raptors double-teaming Bryant hard even on the perimeter when he made any move toward scoring.

Bryant still found cracks to reach the basket at times with his craftiness, though helped by D'Antoni's late-game plan to spread the floor with shooters and let Bryant use Dwight Howard's body to get openings.

After Antawn Jamison missed a 3-pointer created by the double-teaming of Bryant, D'Antoni went with the same unit that closed the game in New Orleans so well: Jodie Meeks, Steve Nash and Metta World Peace with Bryant and Howard.

But Bryant shot over Toronto's gathering defenders down the stretch. He finished regulation with 37 points and 12 assists.

RETIREMENT TALK

Bryant appeared on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" TV show Thursday and was asked when he's going to retire.

Bryant said it'd be "soon," without specifying. When the crowd groaned, Bryant smiled and said it has been a long time, rounding up to 20 years, and noted how he came into the league with a big Afro and now couldn't grow one if he tried.

Bryant, 34, is in his 17th NBA season, all with the Lakers and he said any future seasons will also be with the Lakers. Bryant said he won't go to another club. He is under contract for one more season after this one, and if Bryant plays beyond that there would be finances to figure out given how the Lakers intend to lower their payroll below the luxury-tax plateau at least in the 2014-15 season.

Bryant was wearing some sort of visible protection over his sore right elbow, which he said felt improved in the Lakers' Wednesday victory in New Orleans.

SEEKING .500

It's been awhile since the Lakers have rested above the .500 mark. How long exactly?

"Uh, OKC?" Dwight Howard asked Friday. "Uh, man, were we ever?"

Actually, the last time the Lakers were better than average was Nov. 20, when they beat the Brooklyn Nets in Coach Mike D'Antoni's debut at Staples Center.

"Yeah, that was a long time ago," Howard conceded. "It's OK. We're playing a lot better, even though our record doesn't show how well we've been playing. We're doing a lot of great things.

"We just have to continue trusting each other and build this chemistry. As long as we do that, the better we will be."

The Lakers showed continued signs of their new-found bonding in their season-saving victory against New Orleans on Wednesday, coming back from 25 points down to once again even their season record at 31-31.

"Games like that are like playoff games, games that when everything is not going your way, you have to find a way to win," Howard said. "We stuck together. Offensively, we found a couple of plays that were working the two-man game with me and Kobe (Bryant) and that got everyone else open. Jodie (Meeks) hit some tough shots, then we ran back and played some great defense."

The Lakers have another shot at inching above the .500 mark and moving up in the standings with a victory against Toronto on Friday. The Lakers were 11/2 games behind No. 8 Utah in the Western Conference standing heading into Friday's game.

"We've been above .500 before and I thought we did things good," D'Antoni said. "Then there was four or five games where we reverted back to where you could see the spirit and energy weren't there.

"I think we've sustained it now for 20 games; we've played well. ... A little bit of that, a little bit of this and I think we're in a good spot. We should be able to keep going forward. It should be a sprint the last 20 games."

Steve Nash took a more bleak view of their on-again, off-again record.

"We have to win three out of four games the rest of the way. There are 20 games left and if we win three out of four, it would keep us above .500," Nash said. "If we hover around .500, we won't get anywhere.

METTA THE LEADER

Few would ever expect Metta World Peace to step up and lead. Yet, the oft-times often-embattled Lakers forward is sharing with Howard the leadership skills he learned from a former Laker.

"He's not yet a vocal leader because he hasn't been in that situation enough to lead by example, so I have to really step up and lead more vocally and by example and I try to teach Dwight a little bit about what it takes to lead," World Peace said in an interview Thursday on KSPN/710.

"Some guys look at my stats and they don't see extra defensive player of the years and extra All-Stars because I've been in trouble my whole career. So sometimes I lead by example and make big shots and gain these guys' respect. Everybody leads in different ways. We have a lot of different leaders."

World Peace said Derek Fisher taught him about being a leader.

"I didn't know Metta (before I got here)," D'Antoni said. "But just watching him and appreciating the things he does, I've found out he's a great teammate, and good to have on the team."

Angela Maiers: Habitudes of STEM Leaders

In our recent columns, we've discussed the dearth of U.S. students choosing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math ("STEM").

Today, we want to discuss the behavior set, mindset and belief system of STEM leaders.

We call these habitudes -- because success is a combination of disciplined habits and battle-hard attitudes.

1. Insatiable curiosity

"It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education." - Albert Einstein.

The most renowned leaders and learners are curious about everything. In 2009, Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider became the 9th and 10th women to win the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Greider called it "a tremendous victory for curiosity driven science. We had a simple question of how chromosomes are maintained. It turns out there are major medical implications."

Nurture your curiosity, and let it drive you.

2. Audacious imagination

Imagination is not just for kids. Discovery, innovation, creativity, and learning all begin with imagination. We all have creative potential to dig a bit deeper, stretch ourselves farther, and dream bigger. You can increase your exposure to new ideas, look for new patterns and see how you can combine ideas to improve upon existing strategies and solutions.

Learn to tap into this capacity by using one of my favorite strategies called SCAMPER. Let the processes guide you in through the journey of looking for new ideas and craft your strategy to how to implement those ideas creatively. Opportunity awaits you.

3. Fearless learning

A desire to learn new things is key to success in STEM. Eric Hoffer captured it best when he said, "In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists." Don't be equipped for irrelevance -- keep learning. The moment you proclaim yourself to be "expert," a "guru," or "master of your domain," your days are numbered.

4. Unwavering persistence and perseverance

I have learned that most things of lasting value take time and discipline to achieve. There will be times when you want to turn around, pack it up, and call it quits. Like any ability we wish to master, a level of commitment and discipline is required.

5. Realistic optimism

No doubt, we live in challenging and complex times. As a leader, your ability to be hopeful and dispense hope is crucial to helping those you serve thrive in face of difficulty. During a recent illness, I wanted to get out of bed well before the doctor recommended so I could get on with changing the world. A friend explained to me "The Stockdale Paradox." Admiral Stockdale spent seven years as one of the most senior-ranking American prisoners of war in Vietnam, and was tortured more than 20 times. His experience spawned a philosophy that is now well known in management circles as "The Stockdale Paradox":

"You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end -- which you can never afford to lose -- with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be."

Can you think of a better prescription for a STEM leader?

6. Resilience

Resilience involves being able to change direction. Failure is easy to repeat. You simply do the exact same thing you did previously while expecting the result to be different. It takes effort to consider alternative approaches and to maintain the hope that making such changes can yield better results.

Sometimes these alternative approaches are found only in moments of dark despair. Einstein considered the theory of relativity for a decade, and after a grueling discussion with a friend, announced that he was defeated and giving up his quest. Late that night, a "storm broke loose" in his mind and he solved the theory.

A STEM leader with these habitudes holds steady, synthesizing information from many sources and acts strategically before abandoning or applying a tactic or strategy.

To get good at this, you have to:

• Seek patterns in data and encourage others to do the same
• Question prevailing assumptions and test multiple hypotheses simultaneously
• Plan for roadblocks and commit to efforts to overcome potential setbacks.

Some questions to ponder:

• How resilient are you in face of challenge?
• How am I modeling resilience in my behavior and actions?
• How do I convey the importance of resilience to others who face challenges and obstacles?

2012 Orchestra Website (mini) Review: Responsive Roundup

The Annual Orchestra Website Review examines more than 80 professional orchestras in the United States and Canada and rank them by a detailed series of quantitative criteria but due to Orchestra Crisis 2012/13 (details here) we had to postpone and scale back the reviews. As it turns out, the delay was fortuitous in that it set the stage for ideal timing to focus the review efforts exclusively on what is easily one of the most important design standards for performing arts organization website to date: responsive design.

Specifically, we’re going to see which orchestras have adopted responsive design standards, which ones maintain mutually exclusive desktop and mobile website solutions, and which ones are stuck in a pre-economic downturn mindset.

We examined what responsive standards are and why they are so important to contemporary designs in an article from 4/30/2013 so if you’re starting from scratch on this topic, that’s a good source to review before jumping into the review data.

The mini-review criteria are very straightforward and entirely close-ended in that sites were evaluated on whether they are responsive and if not, do they offer a mutually exclusive mobile version. Responsive sites are more desirable and of those which were not responsive but had a mobile version, the mini-review did not include additional assessment of the design or user experience for those offerings.

Only a handful of US orchestras are using responsive websites.

More than half US orchestras have no mobile solution and among the majority of those who do, they utilize more expensive mutually exclusive solutions.

Canadian orchestras have a strong head-start over their US counterparts but still have plenty of ground to cover.

Although still maintaining a slight lead, the overall Canadian mobile solution situation isn’t much improved compared to US orchestras.

Seeing that the mini-review is all about the value of responsive design, it made since to present the findings in a chart that is 100 percent responsive as opposed to an old school HTML table.

For example, if you’re viewing the results on a desktop, laptop, or standard size tablet the table will be displayed in three columns whereas if you’re on a Smartphone or mini-tablet in portrait orientation, the display has automatically reconfigured the data to display in two columns that beg the user to effortlessly scroll.

The really cool part is the responsive engine pulls the data from the very same source, no need to create a separate version for each device; the responsive engine does all the heavy lifting for you. Enter the data once and you’re done!

You can see the differences in how the responsive engine works the same source data across multiple browser widths, regardless of the device used to connect.

Kudos to the Milwaukee Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Saskatoon Symphony, and Utah Symphony for leading the field as responsive design pioneers!

Although there are no rankings in the mini-review, it is still clear that the vast majority of orchestra websites are falling behind when it comes to keeping up with contemporary design and development standards.

Responsive design is not only here to stay, it is what competitive performing arts organizations need in order to take the next step in improving marketing performance and staying relevant to their patrons.

In the end, maintaining mutually exclusive solutions for desktop and mobile device websites is a drain on time, resources, and patience.

But the silver lining here is adopting a responsive design is much easier than most groups might realize so don’t let a lack of knowledge keep your organization away from adopting a responsive design. Likewise, even if you currently maintain a separate mobile web solution, wrapping everything up in a single responsive design is a comparatively simple undertaking.

Overall, it is an uncomplicated process and can even be as simple and as quick as porting over all of your existing content and design elements into the new framework thereby leaving you free to engage a more thorough redesign process at a time that’s better suited.

Simply put, responsive design is commonsense.

"I hear that every time you show up to work with an orchestra, people get fired." Those were the first words out of an executive's mouth after her board chair introduced us. So yes, sometimes that work results in one or two individuals "aggressively embracing career change" but far more often than not, it reinforces and clarifies exactly what works and why. In short, it doesn't matter if you know where all the bodies are buried if you can't keep your own clients out of the ground, and I'm fortunate enough to say that for more than 15 years, I've done exactly that for groups of all budget size from Qatar to Kathmandu. NFL Quarterback Salaries: Can Star QB's Salary Kill Team?

Those teams that have a 20 million dollar a year QB must have a plan to develop young and cheap talent.

Once the new CBA was inked in July of 2011, I predicted that QB’s would eat up even larger percentages of the cap, and the gap between the stars and rank and file would grow further apart. Joe Flacco’s new deal, on average going forward, will account for about 15% or more of the Ravens cap. Remember that there are 53 men on the rosters not counting inured reserved that are dividing up $123 million this year.

If Joe Flacco is worth 20 million dollars a year then what is Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Tony Romo, and RG III worth? Does Aaron Rodgers have the right to now demand 25 million dollars per year with 50% or more of his contract guaranteed? Of course he does! Is he worth it? Of course he is! Will he get it? ABSOLUTELY! The fact of the matter is that the QB’s take, as a percentage of the cap will continue to escalate at a rapid pace. QB’s are getting harder to find and develop. As the game speeds up, coupled with the “win now” mentality, which has no patience to develop young QB’s, the ones who excel and win will be coveted and paid handsomely. Do not be surprised if we see 4 or 5 QB’s being paid 25 million per year within the next 24 months.

So what does this all mean for building and balancing a roster? For starters, look at Tom Brady’s latest contract move. He restructured his deal to be more cap and cash friendly to the Patriots so they can keep and acquire much needed talent to stay competitive (i.e. Wes Welker). However, Tom is in a unique position to restructure his deal. If he can win another super bowl before he retires he would get exponentially more than what he gave back to the Pats. Not to mention his wife is probably bringing in a few bucks as well. Tom’s attitude towards his teams cap situation is unique and don’t bet on other QB’s following suit. Players and their agents, me included, will try to get as much as we can for our clients and not worry about the rest of the roster.

It is likely that over the next few years, the top ten QB’s and their salaries will account for 20% or more of their teams cap and cash. So, will we have teams that have a great QB surrounded by a bunch of average players? Yes, there will be some. Will the Ravens be able to afford their best players going forward? Probably not, there’s too many of them. However, they will rely on their coaches to develop players and their scouts to find cheap talent. There will be more pressure on teams who pay their QB the lion’s share of the cap to develop undrafted players. The conundrum here that exists for coaches is that the new CBA took away their ability to coach players up on the field in the off-season. Now pre-season and camp is the only time to really develop young players. Superior coaching staffs that actually “teach” will manufacture winning seasons with average talent.

The main reason why John Harbaugh outbid seven other teams to hire Juan Castillo as his run game coordinator (overseeing the O-line) is to develop cheap lineman into serviceable players. We all know Juan will develop late round picks and undrafted free agents. That’s been his identity! The Eagles only drafted two 1st round linemen the 13 years he was the head O-line coach. Bubba Miller, Hank Fraley, Artist Hicks, Nick Cole, and Austin Howard were all undrafted free agents who he developed into solid starters. During 12 of those 13 years, the Eagles never had a drafted center and averaged two college free agents as starters in each year. The year the Eagles went to the Super Bowl they played with two undrafted free agents on the line. When C Hank Fraley was up for a new contract they let him go to the Browns via free agency and just developed another guy. Expect Joe Banner to put the same formula in place if he gets a QB he covets and an O-line coach he trusts to develop young players.

So what does all this mean? This formula saved the team from having to pay and/or draft top lineman so they can put the money elsewhere. So I would suspect as long as the Ravens have Juan Castillo they will not be drafting any lineman in the top three rounds for the foreseeable future.

As the QB numbers go up the positions that will suffer financially the most will be linebacker, fullback, running back, receiver and safety. Left tackles will still get paid but centers and guards will be developed from late round and/or undrafted college free agents. For those teams who have a 25 million dollar a year QB, they better have a plan on how they are going to scout, draft, pay and develop young cheap players.

Recently, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled on Compassionate Apothecary in Mount Pleasant (McQueen v. State of Michigan), sending many patients scrambling, fearing their access to medicinal marihuana will be severely restricted, with Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette interpreting the decision as widespread authority to shut down all dispensaries.

While the decision could be viewed that way, the Supreme Court was much more pragmatic in its decision, essentially telling communities, "It's your choice." The ruling, issued earlier this month, allows prosecutors to shut down dispensaries as a public nuisance, but not as an illegal drug operation. The decision seems to lean toward taking a civil approach instead of filing criminal charges, allowing attorneys and county prosecutors to have a local option of how they want to address dispensaries.

What this means to dispensaries is that registered patients are still protected from arrest when acquiring cannabis, but the provider, or dispensary, is subject to arrest and prosecution, regardless of whether or not money is exchanged. The Court's opinion seems to suggest the voter-approved initiative should be decided by jurors on what is criminal and what is medical.

While it would be difficult for a city to say that a dispensary is now a nuisance when it has functioned for several years providing safe access to the community, at least one city, Flint, is intent on doing so.

In communities where dispensaries are working, what is the incentive to shut them down? Many have thrived and provide compassionate services to the sick, without incident and operating within municipal guidelines.

It is important to remember that Compassionate Apothecary was shut down not because of criminal charges or illegal sales, but deemed a public nuisance, and its owners were not and have not been charged with any crimes.

Essentially, the Supreme Court's ruling puts the decision on medical marijuana back where it belongs -- in the hands of the people. In dispensary cases, owners/operators now have the option of a jury trial, to let residents of the surrounding community decide whether or not to accept the business or view it as criminal behavior. Despite this, for dispensary operators who want to avoid liabilities, it is not advisable to stay open.

The wildcard in this ruling is whether and to what extent Michigan's law enforcement community will pursue closing dispensaries, and if they seek to shut down or criminally charge those facilities. Until this happens, dispensary operators who remain open should be prepared to defend themselves in nuisance or criminal cases.

As new legislation is discussed in Michigan relating to legalizing dispensaries, it is important to remember the intent of the MMMA -- to provide a safe, uninterrupted supply of medical marijuana to patients. While the dispensary model can be successful, and was in several Michigan communities, the safest advice would be to encourage patients and caregivers to return to the self-sustaining cottage industry model while seeing how the battle plays out in Lansing.
