These are most important factors to opt for paid directory submission, as far as free directory submission is concerned,let me tell you,you can do 1000 ,10000 it won't increase your rank since after Penguin and Panda Update, it's content,quality of content which matters more than no of links.

It may not increase your PageRank, but it will increase your standings in the SERPs. I have sites with no PageRank that are doing okay in the SERPs, within their niche, and this is entirely from listings in directories, mostly on pages that do not themselves have PageRank.

Since Google itself is deprecating its PageRank, I think it's fair to say that we need to look at other things. The average user doesn't have a clue as to what PageRank a site he visits may have; the important thing is where it shows up in the SERPs on targeted keywords.

Search on "web directory reviews" and you will see that I show up ahead of other sites that use the same name, and serve the same purpose, although they have PageRank and I do not.

I won't go so far as to say that PageRank is irrelevant. Of course, I'd like to have PageRank and, of course, I would be more inclined to submit to a page with PageRank than one without, but the most important thing is where you show up in the SERPs. Directory pages, even those without PageRank, can help. The relevancy of the category counts, as do the other listings that your site is listed among.

A Podcast Directory Integrated with Dropbox and Google Drive

With Podcast Gallery, you can watch or listen to your favorite podcasts online in the browser itself. You can also send podcast episodes to your Dropbox or Google Drive accounts via the cloud itself.

My latest project, Podcast Gallery is now live. It is an online directory of audio and video podcasts that you can watch /listen in the browser without requiring any software or apps.

Please watch this YouTube video for a quick introduction.

The show pages are integrated with Dropbox and Google Drive and thus you can send your favorite podcast episodes to your online drive directly via the cloud. For instance, if you are on a desktop, you can start a download request and the podcast will instantly become available on your mobile phone (or vice-versa).

The other feature of Podcast Gallery is Collections. You can sign-in with your Facebook or Twitter accounts and add your favorite podcast shows to a collection. These collections have a unique web URL that you can share with friends (see my favorite podcasts) or you can download the list as an OPML file. This will help you importing your favorite podcasts into any RSS Reader or another podcasting app.

Podcast Gallery uses the HTML5 media player and hence the audio /video files would play inline without requiring Flash or other plugins.

You can follow the gallery on Twitter, Facebook or through RSS Feeds.

Internally, the site is built on top of WordPress and the podcast data is sourced from iTunes API and the Google Feeds API. The integration with Dropbox and Google Drive is done with the help of filepicker.io while the media players are powered by the MediaElement.js library. The icon fonts are courtesy the Entypo and Font Awesome libraries.

Cheap Paid directory vs. Free directory

The video actually by-and-large refutes your point, so your comment "wrong with a smiley" is kinda lame.

Whilst you may have considered "directories" link farms since 1999 (as I've been stating for 10 years most SEOs/webmasters treat directories like link farms because they have no idea how to submit correctly), those of us actually in the know, treat them as anything but that.

Matt's video makes very good points in distinguishing fly-by-night directories from real directories.

The charactertistics of Fly-by-night directories are:
- built on dropped domains (not always but it's an easy to spot FBN when they are)
- advertise their PR as their main feature (e.g. "I'm a PR5 directory")
- guarantee inclusion (or fast approvals etc)
- let the submitter pick all the features (anchor text etc)
- have no editorial discretion (they don't edit submitted information or reject sites)
- no value-add (their primary function is a collection of badly categorised links)

There are more characteristics than that, those are just the ones Matt identified in his video.

Where he makes a huge mistake is in suggesting that Google takes action against fly-by-nighters by dropping their toolbar PR. That is the biggest load of horse dung I've ever heard. I could point him to more than 100 PR6+ directories that are the exact definition of fly-by-night JUNK. Their toolbar PR hasn't been actioned at all. It's still there and they trade on it.

Where people need to be careful is in what the directory is offering them. If all the directory offers is PR, and links. Avoid it.

The best directories offer true editorial discretion. You cannot just say you do it. You cannot just say you are human edited and quality. You have to demonstrate it, and those of us with a keen eye will let the community know if we believe you. If we don't, then you need to try harder.

It all comes back to that same old thing. Content. You can easily tell a good directory by looking at its content. Takes me less than a minute to work out whether a directory is abysmal, bad, mediocre, good, great or awesome.

Paid vs Free shouldn't even come into it. Paid directories are generally far cleaner in content because paying stops a lot of spammers from utilising the free submission. Free directory owners also aren't paid so spending time editing review queues for no reward makes it a lot of work.

However, that doesn't mean that paid directories are automatically better. You still need to be very discerning when reviewing paid directories. Actually you need to be more discerning because of the notion of "paid links".

If you submit to a free directory (with no editorial standard) and gain a listing, who cares. You didn't pay for it.

If you submit to a paid directory (with no editorial standard) and gain a listing, you clearly paid for it, and it constitutes a paid link. Which, if found, will count against your site at some point in time. You need to be exceptionally careful when submitting to paid directories and review their content prior to submitting.

Real directories aren't dead. In fact, last PR update saw a boost across the board of the stronger end.

If you have a bunch of "directories" and you aren't interested in being part of the industry, sell them.

It doesn't kill a site, but a google slap lets you know how serious the owner really is. Aviva got slapped in 2007 (as did many others) and it is considered one of the strongest directories these days as a result. 5 years on it still exists due to a lot of work put in by the owner to remedy mistakes (what good business doesn't make mistakes or take risks?)

But most of the directories that get slapped, die, because the owner gives up. It means they were only in it for the short haul...

Agreed! And that in and of itself is helping solidify the validity of the good directories.

Very much so. I'm actually in the process (I've been knee deep in it since the middle of the year) of some major research regarding the good end of the directory spectrum. Hoping to really push them out into the open a bit more.

There's a lot of good directories that don't get a lot of kudos and a lot of good niches being ignored too.
