In 2012 when insurgents were unleashing a string of attacks across Iraq, who would have dared take on the task of bringing warring religious factions together in face-to-face talks?

That would be Alma Abdul-Hadi Jadallah, an immigrant to the U.S. from the Middle East and founder of Kommon Denominator, a Virginia-based consultancy.

"I believe that even the people who do the most horrendous things do them for a reason," Alma told The Story Exchange. "If you give them an opportunity to rethink what they are doing, there is opportunity for transformation."

Alma is a self-defined optimist, a trait that's vital in the tough business of resolving conflicts -- whether it's in countries torn apart by war or local school boards trying to ease tensions with parents and communities.

Her roots lie in the Middle East; Alma was born in Saudi Arabia and was raised in Egypt and Jordan, where she met her husband.

Growing up, her mother convened "outstanding role models" in the family's home: "Arab women who were educated, who were engineers, who were doctors, who were teachers. I believe that their role has been very powerful in my life," Alma says.

In 1989 Alma and her husband Sami - who had grown up in the U.S. - moved to America with their three children. An extrovert, Alma embraced American life, making new friends who would come for dinner, volunteering for non-profits that focused on mediation and conflict resolution, and becoming involved in her children's activities. Life was good, and a decade after she arrived, she decided to pursue her Ph.D.

In 2001, she was writing her dissertation proposal when terrorists attacked the United States on 9/11. She knew she had to change course in her studies because "everything else became irrelevant."

Her upbringing in the Middle East, her life as an immigrant, and her education in conflict resolution put Alma in a unique position, which led her to focus on the impact the attacks had on those working on conflict resolution.

After 9/11, she helped organize meetings of friends, colleagues and members of immigrant groups to talk about the tragic events and how to heal.

Like many Arab-Americans, Alma was put in the position of defending herself and others, as a combination of raw emotion, fear and suspicion threatened to take hold of many communities.

Four days after 9/11, Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh Indian immigrant, was gunned down in Arizona, apparently because he looked Muslim or Arab. It had a deep impact on many immigrants, including Alma. "The attacks forced ethnic communities who were perceived to be a threat to the U.S. to explain who they are," Alma said.

Her thesis would be called "Reflections on Practice: The Impact of 9/11 on Conflict Resolvers" and its aim was to provide insights on practicing conflict resolution under conditions of trauma.

"What [the attacks] confirmed to me was that as a member of any immigrant community, you can not live on the periphery of society. People cannot speak on your behalf or defend you, if they do not know you," she said.

Her experiences would lead her to start Kommon Denominator, a conflict management consulting firm.

Last year she travelled to Iraq for the United Nations to bring together religious leaders from various communities and facilitate dialogue that focused on issues of tension and violence.

"Some of these groups have hurt other groups just because they did not understand their religion very well, or they stereotyped them, or they did not have a deeper understanding of the commonalities that they have."

Alma says that the workshops created a safe environment where these community leaders could begin to talk about difficult issues. Many who attended her workshops were deeply traumatized, having lost literally hundreds of people in their lives through violence. They were coming together and speaking for the first time since the war began.

After the workshops Alma went back for a follow up visit a month later to hear reports on their progress.

"When we came back we noticed that interpersonal relationships have been built, commitment to future collaborations were happening. I think the biggest highlight was the shift in people's thinking [as they questioned] 'what is my role in all of this?'"

Alma says she doesn't resolve conflicts, but instead provides people with the processes and tools to do so themselves.

"We facilitate the conversation so the people who are involved with something that is bothering them ... they are the ones who come up with the solution."

Five Years with Feedly – Why I’m Not Worried about the Demise of Google Reader

When I first heard Google Reader was going, I was really upset. It wasn’t so much about reader itself, but about the possibility of losing the services that depend on it, like my Google Reader interface of choice – Feedly. Feedly logo 2013

As it turned out, there was no need to worry, because thanks to some behind the scenes tech wizardry involving cloning APIs, Feedly will still be around and working long after Google Reader is gone. I’ve been using Feedly for around five years and at this stage I can’t even remember how I found it – what I do know is that I love it.

I’ve already written a comprehensive review of Feedly on this blog, (and here’s my original review if you’re into history), so this time around I’m going to focus on some of the improvements made since then (plus a couple of things I didn’t talk about at the time because they weren’t relevant to me then).

One of those things is the Feedly smartphone app, which means that in addition to being available for Chrome, Safari and Firefox, you can use Feedly on Android and iOS – can anyone say cross-platform compatibility?

I am very happy with how Feedly works in Chrome, Firefox and Android and the seamless syncing of read and saved articles across all platforms. The Android app has big, colorful bars for your main categories (grayed out if you have read them all) and the ability to see snippets of five posts at a time. And swiping your way through the articles is easy. Plus, since it’s on Android, it’s easy for me to share articles to other platforms.

Here are some of the other updates to Feedly since my last review:

When you preview a source in Feedly, it suggests other feeds similar in content via a sidebar module called ‘you might also like’.

There are sidebar modules to show you links shared by Twitter and Facebook friends. I found this a bit noisy and turned off Facebook integration, but I can see where it could be useful. There’s also a small ad in the sidebar, which must be how the developers make money. I believe they deserve any income they get as Feedly is awesome!

In addition to sharing articles directly from Feedly via Twitter, Facebook and others, you can now also +1 them.

One of the features I most wanted in my last review was Buffer integration – Feedly now has it.

There have been major improvements to layout, including a cards view. You can customize the Highlights page to show the most important information first.

Saved to Feedly

You no longer have to move between pages of feeds – the web application features infinite scrolling.

Adding feeds remains easy, either from within the web app or using the Feedly Mini toolbar that pops up on any web page, and now when you add feeds you can also tag them.

There’s fine customization – you can choose among any of the available layouts for each source feed or change them all at once via the preferences panel.

If you’re already using Feedly, you don’t need to do a thing, but if you’re a new user check out these great tips for migrating from Reader.

Feedly made an immediate commitment to keep the service going and to keep developing and improving it – my experience suggests they can deliver on that promise. Changes usually appear on Chrome first before filtering through to other platforms, but it’s worth worth subscribing to the blog (via Feedly, of course) to keep up with developments.

The thing to remember is that SEO isn't a magic bullet. It's important, but no one knows the exact algorithms the SEs use, and each one is different so all you can do is optimize the best you can. There happens to be a few things that you should just always do whenever you make a new website. Don't stress over every little thing, just make sure you are doing it, this should just become kind of automatic for you.
Make sure you fill in your meta tags with a good title, description, and the right keywords. I personally don't think the keywords meta-tag is nearly as important as everyone else on here does, but it gives me a way to organize my keywords list for me to reference. When you start having many different websites, it's good to include whatever notes to yourself you can. When you come back to work on an older site you might not remember eveything you were thinking before. The metatags help you remember your site info as much as it helps the SE figure it out. A good rule of thumb is that anything that won't hurt you for SEO and might help, you should use and use correctly. Definately use the title meta-tag, try to include keywords in the title. Definately use the description meta-tag, google will normally use this for the summary it displays in the listing. It isn't used for indexing so write it for humans, this is what gets people to click on your link when they see it in the SERP. Don't use the same metatags for every page on your site. Take the time to make them be specific to each page.
Create good content. Make sure you have some decent content. Content is what the internet was invented for. If you have unique and quality content, then all the seo and backlinking you're doing is just to get the ball rolling. Give them what they want, show them where it is, and they'll start coming. If it's good enough then it'll eventually start building on its own naturally because people like what they found. That's the idea anyway. So whenever possible use the best page design and the best content possible. Avoid duplicate content between different pages on your site, the SE will most likely penalize your site for that.
Remember, your content isn't just something to get google to like your site, it is the whole point of your site. The content and how you structure it is what will make visitors do what you want when they get there. If it's crap they'll just leave, and 99% of them won't leave by clicking on your adsense or affilliate link, they'll just close the window or use the back button. (yes, of course if your doing blackhat stuff you can make the browser go where you want, but that's for a different discussion.)
Include your keywords. Structure your content correctly, make a few title headers in the content that include keywords (use header tags h1, h2, etc.), try to have a keyword density around 2% in your content, and maybe 4% for the whole page including the metatags, alt tags, anchors, etc.

Be sure that your .htaccess is set up correctly. Decide on which way you want your url to be and stick with it. If you decide to use www then always use it like that in your links, don't use both. I usually set up a 301 for all www requests to redirect to non-www urls. If you don't set that up then every single page on your site can appear to google as having at least one duplicate. If that's the only thing wrong on your site it isn't going to kill you, but it's so easy to fix. If you don't know how to set up a redirect in your .htaccess file then just do a search, there are many other threads explaining it. Check google if you can't find it here. Also, .htaccess only apples if your on an Apache server, Windows servers do it a little differently, if that applies to you then just search google to find out how to do it. If your consitent in your linking, then the only time the redirect will come into play is if you get natural backlinks that you have no control over. You should also specify which you prefer, www or not-www in google tools if you use it. (If you don't then you really should, I recommend you set yourself up an account for webmaster tools and analytics.)
Make a robots.txt file and I like to include a favicon because without them the robots will trigger file not found errors on your server. Be sure to configure your robots.txt correctly. Make a custom 404 page. If your site has more than just a couple of pages then also create a sitemap.xml file. It's not a bad idea to just create a sitemap anyway no matter what, it lets you define the structure of your site to the crawlers. Just search google if you don't know how to do any of that, it's very basic and you can find exact instructions within a minute when you do a search.
Other than that there isn't a lot more you can do for on-site SEO. When people ask about SEOthey're always thinking of on-site SEO, but thats the easy and quick part. Just do it and get on with it.
Everything else is off-site SEO and involves building backlinks and promotion.
This is where you need to focus your efforts. This is where the magic bullet is, if there really is one.
Social Bookmarks, Directory Submissions, Profile Links, and Blog Comments are really the easiest place to start getting backlinks. It's not a bad idea to purchase these links from a service. They are easy to make, but to do it right they really need to be posted from many different accounts and ip adresses. A good idea when your starting is to do it yourself a little bit to see how it works, then purchase larger quantities from a service. You want to get a lot of links, but you don't want to over do it. Building to fast can look unnatural, just do some searches and read up on it a little more. How many and how fast is a judgement call you have to make. hold off on more complex linkbuilding until you have a little more experience. Linkwheels and other link structures can be very powerful, but can also hurt your site a lot if not done correctly.
Whenever possible include keyword anchors and title or alt tags on your backlinks. Don't always use the same anchors, vary it up a little, use 3 or 4 different keywords and even do a few with some non keyword anchors. You are trying to look as though a lot of different real people have taken a liking to your site, if it were natural then all links wouldn't be exactly the same, so you want to simulate that same type of randomness. Backlinking strategies are all about simulating the natural events that happen as a site grows in popularity. If you can do it successfully then the SE's will give you good position in the listings, and then hopefully what you are simulating can become reality. The point of all of it is to get traffic.
Change up your anchor text. The idea of backlinking is to simulate that masses of people are becoming interested in your site. It should have some amount of randomness to it in order to look natural. I've seen a few made up stats on what's best, but I think a good rule of thumb is maybe about 45% primary keywords, 35% secondary keywords, and about 15% random unrelated like Click Here, and then about 5% just the url. The exact percentage isn't dramatically important, it just needs to seem like the linking is natural.
Create relevant articles containing your keywords, include backlinks using keyword anchors, and submit to article directories. Article directories are mostly authority sites and your article becomes a relevant backlink to your site. Then create profiles and accounts on blogs, social networking sites, forums etc. Include a link to your website whenever you do that and each one of those become backlinks as well.
Thats the end of it. Well kinda.
Go back and watch your stats to see what keywords are getting the most traffic to your site, analyze the data a little bit and if you need to, remove or add keywords to your content and tags, and adjust the anchors your using in your backlinks.
Continue building links. Remember you're trying to artificially create the appearance to the SE that your site is popular. When that happens naturally, people are always adding new links to your site. Since you are trying to look natural you have to do the same thing. Linkbuilding never stops completely.
OK, there you go. That's that basics of SEO. Everything else is about fine tuning, and has to be looked at for each individual situation.

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 4, Episode 19 of CBS' "The Good Wife," titled "Death of a Client."

"The Good Wife" killed John Noble and turned his death into one of the best episodes of the series. Ever.

In "Death of a Client," Alicia's night on the town with Peter at the Shamrock Dinner is ruined by the news of Matthew's ("Fringe" star Noble) murder. The police question Alicia about Matthew, a previously unseen client until now. Their interaction in the episode is 1. Adorable and 2. Told through flashbacks. It's a departure for "The Good Wife," but one that works well in terms of the pacing and tone of the episode. Noble's character was quite eccentric -- would you have him any other way? -- and Alicia described him as very litigious. The police lied to Alicia and said they found her address in the GPS of the murderer's car in an effort to get her to break attorney/client privilege. Sneaky cops. It's that willingness to sue that ended Matthew's life. It wasn't the CIA, a crooked cop or the phone company that did him in, rather it was the owner of a barking dog he previously sued. "Have you ever met a dog lover?" Kalinda asked. It was a court-less episode with no real case, which was quite the treat and a very needed change of pace.

"This is America. You can sue anybody!" John Noble was delightfully entertaining as Matthew. There was just the right amount of him. He wasn't overwhelming by any means. The last scene with him and Alicia was the sweetest.

When Alicia thought her life was possibly in danger, she asked her mother Veronica (the wonderful Stockard Channing) to take her kids to safety. They didn't get very far and ended up in a bar. It was there that Veronica started revealing family secrets, which was great. The kids didn't annoy me for once and whenever viewers are given more insight into Alicia's past, the more I appreciate the character. According to Veronica, Alicia was quite the wild child. Also Zach slept with Becca (!) and uber religious Grace is dating that kid. "The more you know." Can't wait for more Alicia/Veronica interaction. Also, can we get Stockard Channing to stick around more? Please and thank you.

Over in election land, Matthew Perry returned as Mike, the Republican candidate for governor. He was up to his old tricks (lying) and being a big ole schmuck. "Die choking on your own blood, please," Alica said to him. After lying to the cardinal about why Alicia left with the police, Peter punches Mike in the bathroom and makes it look like he fell after drinking too much. The cardinal didn't end up endorsing either candidate, to the delight of Eli.

Meanwhile, in dangling plot thread news:

Cary grabbed Kalinda's hand and, earlier in the episode, she was at a bar with a woman.

Alicia seemed pretty conflicted with letting go of Will, but this could be it. "We're keeping each other from moving on ... It's passed and I'm pretending it's not. I'm being selfish. I mean, even talking about it here, I'm being selfish. I'm back with Peter. Now this has to end," she told him holding back tears.

Amanda Peet is still around, lusting after Will.

And the most important one ... Will Diane become a Supreme Court Justice!? I mean, you drop that possibility in front of me and then you leave it there? How rude, "Good Wife." How rude. Peter approached Diane about being his nominee for the spot ... could she leave Lockhart/Gardner behind? I'm leaning toward no, but I'd love to see her say yes. I'm just not sure how they'd keep her around and in the mix if she did.

"Death of a Client" was a wonderful episode of "The Good Wife." Why can't they all be like this?
