8 Little Known Facts About Eating At Your Desk

This story originally appeared on Quartz.

There’s no avoiding it. Work an eight-hour day (or longer) and you’ll have to stop to eat at some point. Be it a questionable sandwich or a lavish lunch, workers need grub. But what should you eat to achieve maximum results? And is skipping lunch to polish off that email really such a bad thing?

Here’s the Quartz ultimate guide to eating at work:

Eating in the office canteen is good for you. In Finland, at least.

The Finnish have done a lot of research into workplace eating habits. One study by the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare found that workers who ate in office cafeterias, compared to those who brought in packed lunches, were eating more fruit and vegetables. This has a lot to with the fact that in Finland, food provided in canteens must meet national nutritional guidelines.

In the US, a study by the Society of Public Health Education found that the number one source of food workers were bringing into the office was fast-food joints. The same study also found that if healthy food was provided on site, workers were more likely to make healthier choices.

To be sure, the wisdom of eating in a canteen does depend on the quality of what’s on the menu. Staff interviewed at Barnsley Borough Council in London described the food in their cafeteria as “stodgy” and more suited to manual laborers.

Skipping lunch is bad for you.

As explained in his book about workplace eating habits, Christopher Wanjek found that workers who skip lunch are more stressed, less productive and only end up snacking in the afternoon anyway.

The endless cycle of bad nutrition and low national productivity.

Poor eating choices impact productivity. In fact, it causes this shame spiral:

eating at work

What’s the deal with superfoods?

In the nineties, it was all about organic food. Then along came the concept of “superfoods,” a term used to describe foods that are supposedly really, really good for you. But it turned out to be more of a re-branding exercise for otherwise fairly mundane supermarket produce, like berries. And if you ask a scientist, the term superfood actually means something completely different. It’s used in academia to refer to calorie-dense food, like chocolate.

There is sufficient evidence, however, to support consuming things like honey, salmon, soy, lean red meat, cinnamon and green tea because of the positive effects they have on health and, ergo, productivity (see chart above).

Broccoli is also definitely good for you.

But there’s simply no such thing as a miracle food. It’s best to load up on as many different types of fruit and vegetables, lean meats and low-fat dairy (if you eat those), and legumes (pulses, such lentils and beans) as possible.

Eating well: whose responsibility is it, anyway?

When surveyed by researchers from Nottingham University, staff at the UK’s National Health Service said they felt they had a responsibility to set an example for healthy eating at work. But the American Journal of Public Health found that for healthy eating habits at work to take any effect, workers’ families also had to get on board. What people eat at work is linked to their overall lifestyles and attitudes to nutrition. Since many people (especially manual workers) bring food from home prepared by a partner, educating the family is all the more important.

And Wanjek makes a case for improving the street food on offer—particularly in developing economies—so that people have inexpensive, nutritious options near their work. Using a case study from South Africa, Wanjek outlines how government intervention led to tighter regulations on vendors, in turning improving their safety standards. Vendors in the Guateng province, where this project took place, became reliable sources of affordable food for workers stopping by on their lunch breaks.

The desktop dining debate.

Roughly 70% of Brits and 67% of Americans eat lunch at their desks. But is this such a bad thing? Two Slate writers slung this one out. Inspired by her time working in France, Rachael Levy wants us to take a cue from the French when it comes to taking lunch breaks. She argues that taking the time to have lunch away from the office makes you a more productive, happier worker.

Rachael Larimore told her to back off and let her eat her sandwich, at her desk, in peace. Larimore said she’d rather forfeit her lunch hour and snaffle her sandwich while plowing through her work so that she can finish a little earlier to spend more time with her family.

Of the two Rachaels, Levy’s probably right. Research from the University of California-Davis has found that powering through a lunch break, especially on a thought-intensive task, hinders performance. Letting your brain “rest” in your lunch break can help recharge your creative capabilities.

Go easy on the booze at the office party.

The booze might be flowing at the office party, but so are the lewd comments. Researchers at Cornell University conducted a study that found when people drink in or around the workplace, harassment is more likely to take place. In offices which turn a blind eye to drinking during working hours, women are twice as likely to experience “gender harassment,” or aggressive and offensive remarks made by fellow colleagues.

Employers should help staff lose weight.

Research has found that overweight workers run up big costs to employers. After studying work-related injuries at one of their facilities in Texas, researchers at Shell Oil found overweight employees to have a 50% greater risk of injury than their average-weight colleagues. Sick leave and health-care costs also stacked up higher among these employees. Anti-smoking campaigns in the workplace have been a success; researchers are now encouraging employers to implement weight-loss programs. Just imagine the poster campaigns.

SEOPressor Version 5 – The Baddest Little WordPress Plugin on the Planet

SEOPressor helped me get over one of the biggest challenges I faced when I started blogging.

I know it sounds strange to refer to an inanimate object that way. But alas, I must admit, a digital product has become one of my dearest online friends.

Sure, other plugins tried to step-in and take my attention away from SEOPressor.

They tried to lure me away with fancy-schmancy features and high-fluting options that I couldn’t begin to wrap my brain around. There’s even one of the free WordPress Plugins for SEO that is so complicated the developer charges big bucks for a webinar to explains how to use it properly. (I don’t know about you, but something about that business model seems a little backwards….)

But I hung in there. I waited for the updated SEOPressor Version 5. And boy, oh boy am I glad I did!

(By the way, if you use my affiliate link above to buy the SEOPressor WordPress plugin I thank you in advance. It doesn’t effect the price you pay and here’s more about the results I’m getting).

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so let me ask you this: How many of you have received a message like this when you logged into Google Webmaster Tools:

GWT Alert all thanks to SEOPressor

No, I’m not talking about one of those warning messages from Webmaster Tools that warns you about having an unnatural link profile or excessive use of anchor text.

I’m talking about the happy kind of message that makes you skip around the room for 15 minutes.

Google is telling me that they love the content on this blog so much that they are rewarding me with more traffic! Significantly more traffic! Talk about connecting with influencers – SEO Pressor connected my blog to the biggest traffic influencer around. Meet my new best friend.

Google.

SEOPressor

So how did such an awesome plugin get even better? If you know me well, you know that I can show you better than I can tell you. Feast your eyes on my video review and tutorial for SEOPressor Version 5.

SEOPressor Version 5 – Tutorial and Review

One thing I need to you know about our new friend Google is that they like to keep the relationship between us fresh and exciting. They never want things to be stale and boring so they like to mix it up make sure we stay on our toes. I know this can be annoying at times, which is why we need help. Thank goodness that WordPress Plugins for SEO can point us in the right direction so we’re on top of the situation.

The latest game changing features that were introduced by Google are Google Authorship and Author Rank. In order to tweak our blogs and get a preview of how our Google Authorship appears in search results, they also introduced something called Rich Snippets and the Rich Snippet Testing Tool. Take a look at one of my listings from Google search.

Rich Snippet from SEOPressor

One of the biggest updates to this plugin is the Rich Snippets settings panel. This provides an area for us to tweak the content that will appear in the snippet in the search engine results page (SERP) listing. We can add additional information about reviews, products, events, people and even recipes that make our search listing more attractive to users and increases our click through rates.

Another important option that’s now integrated with SEOPressor is known as LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing:

“These are essentially keywords related to the keywords that you are searching for, and Google does this by using a system known as LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). In a nutshell, it is based on user search patterns and behavior, how one keyword search is usually linked to another keyword search.

Google has confirmed that by using more LSI keywords, your page typically ranks better…”

In the video I show you exactly how to use the LSI panel on the WordPress Blog post editor – so don’t worry if you find the terminology confusing. It’s really simple once you follow my step-by-step instructions.

One step you need to take in order to make the LSI keywords appear is to sign up for a Bing API key. This is another simple process that you need to do only once. Hopefully you have an account with Bing already and you’re using their Webmaster Tools as well (let me know if you need help setting up Bing Webmaster Tools and if necessary I’ll record a tutorial for that also).

Managing a blog with multiple authors can sometimes be an overwhelming task. Back in 2011 I realized that I needed a plugin that would help conquer the overwhelm and that’s when I found SEO Pressor. Andy Bailey introduced me to it when I did a guest post on the CommentLuv blog and I was hooked ever since.

It still does all the things I loved about it when I did my first review back in August of 2011 when I listed these features:

Highlight keywords in your postAdd keywords in your post titleCheck for keywords in H1, H2 and H3 tagsCheck for Alt Image tag and add one if it’s missingVerify that you have internal links (for on-page SEO)Calculate Keyword DensityRemind you to add rel="nofollow" on external links (although this blog is DoFollow)

Now it does so much more and based on the feedback that I get from my guest authors it helps them become better writers too. In the end we all want to deliver better content to our readers and stay up on the top of search results so we can keep getting new ones right? I definitely include this one on my list of Top 10 WordPress Plugins for making that happen.

Have you tried SEOPressor – let me know what you think of it in the comments below.

Carnival Lawsuits: Passengers Have Little Cause To Sue, Lawyers Say

By Tom Hals

Feb 15 (Reuters) - After four days on a crippled cruise ship with overflowing toilets, stifling heat and hours-long waits for food, at least one passenger from the Carnival Triumph is seeking legal revenge.

But lawyers familiar with cruise ship lawsuits suggest angry passengers should think twice before rushing to the courts. Unless passengers suffered major injuries or other losses due to negligence by the cruise operator, they would be better off accepting compensation from Carnival Corp, they said.

The Carnival Triumph was towed into port in Mobile, Alabama, late on Thursday, giving disembarking passengers an opportunity to speak out about their ordeal.

Within hours, Cassie Terry, of Brazoria County, Texas, filed a lawsuit in federal court in Miami describing the ship as "a floating toilet, a floating Petri dish, a floating hell" and seeking damages from Carnival Corp.

As the ship listed as it was being towed, Terry was in constant fear of contracting serious illness from raw sewage spilling from non-functioning toilets. She had to wade through human feces to reach food lines that were hours long, only to receive spoiled rations, according to the lawsuit.

But Terry's account and those of other passengers do not describe the type of injuries or harm that could lead to a successful lawsuit, according to attorneys who specialize in suing cruise companies.

Conditions might have been disgusting "but get over it," said Miriam Lebental, an attorney from San Pedro, California, who specializes in cruise ship injuries.

Like other attorneys that pursue cruise companies, she said she would not be interested in taking a case unless it involved a major injury and negligence, such as a passenger breaking their neck during a fall down an unlit stairwell.

There have been no such reports from the Triumph.

Terry declined to comment. Her attorney, Brenton Allison of Gilman & Allison in Pearland, Texas, said he understood that other attorney's were skeptical about taking cases from passengers, but his client was nauseated and running a fever.

"I don't know what may manifest from her exposure to those conditions," he said, adding that Terry would decline the compensation offered.

Carnival has offered passengers $500, reimbursed their transportation and many onboard costs and given them a credit toward a future cruise equal to the amount they paid for the Triumph vacation.

Jim Walker, a premier lawyer for cruise passengers, said passengers would be wise to take the money.

"It's more than any attorney could get for them," said Walker, a partner at Walker & O'Neill in South Miami, Florida.

The cruise industry has become adept at using tickets, which are binding contracts, to limit their liability and define how a passenger can sue the cruise company, the lawyers said.

These tickets are "the most onerous one-sided terms and conditions," said Walker. "It's difficult to sue them."

For example, the tickets for the Costa Concordia, which hit rocks off the coast of Italy in January 2012 and killed 32, required passengers to sue in Italy.

Several cases brought in Miami federal court by Concordia passengers were dismissed for that reason.

In the case of the Triumph, the tickets likely contain similar language that require that lawsuits be brought in federal court in Miami, regardless of where the passenger lives.

The cruise industry has said that such "forum selection" clauses in cruise tickets help keep down costs for cruise operators by corralling all litigation in one court.

Walker said it gives the cruise industry leverage.

"It's like built-in home court advantage for the Miami Heat," he added.

Carnival, which is the parent company to both the Triumph and the Concordia, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cruise companies have also been able to limit their liability for accidents that occur during shore excursions or for the negligence of ship staff.

That is because the cruise companies use outside companies to handle activities such as parasailing, even when the staff leading the excursions wear shirts or hats bearing the insignia of the cruise company.

Cruise tickets often state that harm caused during excursions must be brought against the company that provided the activity.

Many staff doctors or masseuses are independent contractors and passengers must sue them, not the cruise line, and staff often do not have insurance and frequently are not Americans.

"If the ship doctor kills you, your family has to chase the doctor in South Africa or the Middle East or India, which is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible," Walker added.

Little Girl Cries And Laughs Uncontrollably At The Doctor's Office (VIDEO)

Most kids, heck, even most adults, don't like going to the doctor's office. The girl in the video above is no exception.

But what happens when the doctor in question -- a dermatologist -- starts tickling the bottom of the patient's feet? Said pig-tailed patient goes from crying to laughing in a matter of seconds. And then continues to adorably alternate between crying and laughing for the rest of the visit.

According to the YouTube description of the video, the girl was visiting the dermatologist to have the calluses around a wart 'scraped.' She was terrified it would hurt.

"As it was, it was a little uncomfortable, but also alternated to being quite tickelish too! As this hilarious video shows, she alternates from crying hysterically and laughing hysterically," writes moonstarz01 on YouTube.

Possibly the sweetest visit to the doctor to be caught on tape. Ever.

Little Known Gems for your Windows Computer

This is a list of little-known but essential software utilities for Windows that are free, light-weight and add new and useful features to your computer.

Windows Software Utilities

Here are some of the most useful software utilities that you wish were part of standard Windows. These tools are free, light-weight and can be installed on all versions of Windows including the newer Window 8.

Eraser – When you delete a file in Windows, the contents of the file can still be recovered using other utilities. Eraser lets you permanently delete a file making recovery nearly impossible.Unlocker – If you are trying to delete a file (or folder) but unable to do so because the “file is in use” by another program, just use Unlocker to end all the locking processes.ShellExView – As you install new programs, the contextual menu gets cluttered and confusing. With ShellExView, you can clean up the right-click menu and remove all the useless entries.Everything – Windows includes powerful desktop search capabilities but Everything goes one step further. It looks for files and folders irrespective of their location  (including temporary files and system folders) and you can also use regular expressions in your search queries.Always on Top – This tiny utility lets you easily keep any window on top of all other windows on your desktop. For instance, you can answer your emails, work on an Excel sheet while a YouTube video plays in the foreground.SyncToy – One of the most useful software utilities from Microsoft that lets you keep different folders in sync with each other. You can configure it with Windows Task Manager to run file synchronization jobs automatically at custom intervals.WinDirStat – Running out of space on Windows? WinDirStat helps you reclaim disk space by creating a visual treemap of your entire hard disk where the area of the colored rectangles is proportional to the size of the underlying folders.Double Killer – This is the only tool you need to get rid of all duplicate files on your computer including images and music files. It compares the file hash to identify duplicate files.TCPView – It will list all the software programs (or processes) on your computer that are accessing the Internet including the IP addresses that they are connecting to. Ignore all the columns except Process, Remote Address and State.Droplr – This is the easiest way to upload your desktop files onto the web. It does this by calculating the sunrise and sunset times of your location.ZoomIt - It turns your desktop into a virtual whiteboard allowing your to draw /annotate anywhere on the screen using colored pens. An essential tool for presenters.LockBox – Put all your confidential files into a folder and then use the LockBox utility to completely hide that folder inside Windows Explorer.Safehouse Explorer – It is easy to misplace USB drives. Safehouse lets you quickly encrypt and password-protect data inside USB drives so others won’t be able to view your files and folders.

6 Ways You Can Put a Little ‘Gangnam Style’ into Video Marketing

Most video marketers have probably heard of the famous “Gangnam Style” video that, since its release in July 2012, is the most viewed and liked video on YouTube. The most viral video on YouTube is definitely worth a little analysis to figure out what made it so popular with most of the world.

What is Gangnam Style?

Gangnam style refers to the style of the people living in the Gangnam District of Seoul (much like Beverly Hills). In this area of Korea, there are many people who are considered posers and wannabes, and the “Gangnam Style” video is poking fun at these people trying to be something that they are not.

The song lyrics explain the characteristics of the type of girl that Psy (the Korean artist in the video) wants – a classy girl who is modest during the day, but knows how to have fun at night. Psy and his style is just like that, “oppa Gangnam style.”

Ready to put a little “Gangnam Style” into video marketing? Here’s how.

The Element of Surprise

“Gangnam Style” has about 22 different locations in the video. While it might be hard to get that many different scene changes for some, it is important to keep a video fresh and surprising.

Don't bore an audience with the same setting throughout the whole video. Change it up – surprise them, keep them wondering what is going to happen next. Remember, it’s OK to be random; it’s actually preferred!

Humor

Humor is a great tool to engage and entertain. Who doesn’t love to laugh?

Mixing awkward humor (like the part in “Gangnam style” when Psy tries to lay on a man’s shoulder in the sauna) with just-plain-funny humor (like the little Korean kid dancing like Michael Jackson) is a great method to keep people curious and entertained. Make sure to implement a little awkward and just-plain-funny humor into video.

Sex Appeal

Sex sells, but is it more important than humor? Apparently not, if you look at the number of video views.

When comparing the version of the "Gangnam Style" video that has more sex appeal (the main girl Hyuna is singing more of the song) with the one that has more humor (Psy sings the majority), humor takes the cake. Adding sex appeal to a video is important, but it should always take second place to humor.

Luxury

Throughout the video there are many signs of class and luxury. Psy is always wearing sunglasses and, aside from when he's in a pool or the sauna, a suit.

Showing an audience class and quality in a video is important in reflecting the class and quality of a business. People want to live a life of luxury, so show them what they want, show them how being associated with a business can help them get to that life.

Call to Action Links

Knowing when and where to place call to action links is important. The natural way a person native to the English language will look at something is from left to right. Makes sense right – it's the way English is written.

The most valuable link should be both at the beginning of the video in the top left corner, and at the end of the video on the top right corner.

“Gangnam Style” places their call to action links accordingly. The first link is a direct link to download their song on iTunes. This is paired with a link below it on the right side to subscribe to their channel.

The end of the video (before the extras) has two subscription links on the top right side. After the extras they again have their most important call to action link in the top right corner, to download their song.

Title and Description

Keep it simple and to the point. Use keywords that are already popular in a specific target market (“Gangnam Style” used Psy in the title because he is already a great Korean Pop artist, driving them more traffic).

In the description, link to areas where people can find out more about the video and what it offers. Link to a company website, a Wikipedia page, more videos of the same genre, etc.

Make sure to give the audience enough information so they don't go looking elsewhere for details on the video. Make the description a one-stop-shop for all the info they are looking for.

Summary

“Gangnam Style” is such a revolutionary video because it puts humor and fun into a portrayal of Korea, a country that is usually characterized as being professional, hard-working, and talented. Psy is basically making fun of himself, and this is the element of the video that makes it so compelling.

Many times business videos are taken too seriously! All they need is a little “Gangnam Style” to spice them up and make them come to life.

Any files that you place in the drop zone are instantly upload and the public link is copied to the clipboard automatically.TinyGrab – Press a hotkey to grab a quick screenshot of anything that’s on your desktop screen and TinyGrab will put it online in a snap. The screen captures will stay online forever until you remove them.Mouse Borders – Another useful utility from Microsoft that lets you control multiple computers from the same keyboard and mouse. Simply hold down the Alt key and then left-click to  drag the window or use right-click to resize the window.ClipX – When you copy anything to your Windows Clipboard, all the previous content is overridden.
