How to Send Out of Office Replies in Twitter

Are you travelling for business or going on a vacation? You can create out-of-office automatic replies for people who are trying to reach you via Twitter and they won’t expect a response from you right away!

Twitter, for many, has become a preferred medium of communication in recent years. Your email message may never get read or, in the worst case, may get caught in the Spam folder but tweets are less likely to suffer from such issues.

When you are travelling or take a “disconnected” vacation, with limited or no access to the Internet, you create an “out of office” reply in your email program to let people know that you won’t be able to respond to them right away. How about doing something similar for people who are trying to reach you through Twitter?

Twitter Auto-Reply

Unlike your email program, Twitter offers no easy way for you to setup out of office auto-replies but we can easily and quickly add such a feature to our Twitter account(s) with the help of a simple Google Script.

You specify the start date and the end date when the auto-responder should be active and any tweets sent to you during this period will automatically get a reply from your Twitter account saying you are out of office. The replies are sent once so if a person sends you two or more tweets during your vacation period, they will get only one out-of-office auto-reply.

Go to dev.twitter.com and sign-in with your existing Twitter account. Create a new Twitter app (screenshot), add a description, website (any URL) and callback URL (https://spreadsheets.google.com/macros/).Once the Twitter app has been created, click the Settings tab and set Read and Write as the Application Type. Click Update to save your changes.Switch to the OAuth tool tab and make note of the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret.Open script.google.com and choose File -> Make a copy to duplicate the auto-responder script into your Google Drive.Enter the start and end dates of your vacation, the Twitter app keys (from the previous step), and your Twitter handle.Go to Run -> Start to initialize the auto-responder. Say Yes if the script requires you to authorize access to certain Google Script services.Choose Run -> Start and it will show an “Authorization Required” dialog. Allow the script to access your Twitter account and you are done.

The script will invoke itself on the start date specified by you and will respond to all incoming tweets until the end date. It will then uninstall itself automatically. As always, you are free to use, modify and distribute the source code with attribution.

When you are taking another vacation, just open the auto-responder script already present in your Google Drive, change the Start and End dates and choose Run->Start to setup the autoresponder again.

Can I Use Microsoft Office Clip Art and Stock Images Elsewhere?

The royalty-free stock photos and clip art images included in Microsoft Office can be used in commercial project but cannot be sold as standalone products.

One of the nice benefits of having Microsoft Office is that you get access to tons of royalty-free stock photographs, illustrations, animations and clip art to enhance your Word documents and PowerPoint presentations.

These images can be accessed directly from any of the Microsoft Office programs or you may download them online from the Microsoft Office website at office.com.

Office Images and Clip Art

An oft-asked question is can you use these photos and clip art files outside Microsoft Office for a commercial or non-commercial project?

For instance, would it be legal to use the Office images on a public web page – say for the purpose of illustrating a blog post? Can you modify or annotate an image found on Office.com? Or can you use them in a printed technical manual or as the cover image of an ebook?

The Microsoft Office license agreement and the services agreement include details around legitimate usage:

You may not (i) sell, license, or distribute copies of the media elements by themselves or as a product if the primary value of the product is the media elements; (ii) grant your customers rights to further license or distribute the media elements; (iii) license or distribute for commercial purposes media elements that include the representation of identifiable individuals, governments, logos, trademarks, or emblems or use these types of images in ways that could imply an endorsement or association with your product, entity or activity; or (iv) create obscene works using the media elements.

The support site for Microsoft Office uses the phrase “unrestricted usage” and says that “you can use any image in the Office Clip Art and Media Library without restriction, except if the image becomes a product for sale.” The Clip Organizer manual requires that Microsoft Office users include a valid copyright notice on products that includes clip art and photos used from the Office Media library.

I am no legal expert but the language of these agreements does seem to indicate that you can use the Microsoft Office clip art and images for any purpose, including commercial projects, as long as you are not redistributing or reselling the clip art and image files as a stand-along product.

The online Office media gallery also sources images and clip art from external websites like iStockPhoto and Fotolia. The Office license may or may not cover the usage rights of these media files.

Office 2013 or Office 365 – Which Edition Should You Buy?

Learn about the main differences between Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 2013 plus some advice on buying the right edition of Microsoft Office for your needs.

Microsoft has introduced a new version of their trusted Office productivity suite and home consumers essentially have to make a choice between Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 365. Office 2013 vs Office 365 Compare Microsoft Office 2013 with Office 365

Before we delve deeper into the topic, please note that the new Microsoft Office editions are only available for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OS X machines. Also, there isn’t an upgrade path available so even if your computer is running Microsoft Office 2010, you’ll still have to buy the full license.

Microsoft Office 2013, like the previous versions, is a bundle of core Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. A single license would allow you to install the Office suite on just one Windows PC.

Microsoft Office 365 is a suite of the same Office programs but here you have an option to install Office on up to five different Windows PCs or Macs. There are not product keys to enter as everything is tied to your Microsoft account. You also get 20 GB of extra storage space on SkyDrive with Office 365.

Another advantage with Office 365 is that you can stream the full version of Microsoft Office on any Windows PC on demand.

This is useful in situations when you are working on someone else’s computer that doesn’t have a copy of Microsoft Office – go to office.com, sign-in with your Microsoft account and within minutes you’ll get the full version of Office on that computer. The Office software is “streamed” and isn’t permanently installed on that computer (just like web apps).

Microsoft Office Streaming On Demand With Office 365, you can temporarily install Office on any Windows PC

The Microsoft Office 2013 license is valid forever and you can use it for the life of your PC. However, in the case of Office 365, you don’t get a perpetual license but are required to pay an annual subscription (it’s like renting the Office suite).

The Office 365 Home Premium edition is $99.99 (12-month subscription) while the Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Student Edition is $139.99 (single PC).

Thus, deciding between the two Office editions should be easy. If you have multiple computers at home or need access to the entire suite of Office products (including Outlook, Publisher and Access), go with Office 365 else the Office 2013 Home edition could prove to be a more economic option in the longer run.

There are about 120 immigrant rights activists -- young undocumented immigrants, migrant workers and allies -- on the Washington Mall with advocacy group Casa de Maryland on Monday.

They walked for about 10 blocks, chanting most of the way. "What to we want?" "Immigration reform!" "When do we want it?" "Now!"

Many of the group's fellow inauguration-goers looked on with some amusement, but a few seemed excited to join in.

Nathaly Uribe, a 17-year-old undocumented high school senior, received deferred action in December. She said the policy, implemented by the president last year for young undocumented immigrants, has given them hope. But they still want broader reform, she said, and plan to remind President Barack Obama of his promise.

Spectators Outside White House Get Excited

From a White House pool report:

At 10:26 am, Pool is holding in van outside WH. The bleachers on this section of Pennsylvania ave are about 50% full. A few moments ago, a man in a red hat and black coat appeared to be serving as a volunteer cheerleader, running up and down the length of one section, and leading the crowd in doing the wave and screaming "Wooo!" as they rose to their feet and raised their hands in the air. Protesters Gather, Urge 'Jobs Not War'

From the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON — A few dozen protesters were gathered along the Inauguration Day parade route on Pennsylvania Avenue invoking the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King's legacy and urging jobs, not war.

The protesters from the anti-war group ANSWER Coalition handed out posters saying "Dr. King's Legacy ... Jobs Not War."

Brian Becker, director of the coalition, said the group chose to focus on messages that would resonate with a pro-President Barack Obama crowd.

In addition to the poster focusing on MLK's legacy and jobs, protesters also had signs saying "Indict Bush Now" and "Drone Strikes (equals) War Crimes."

Little Girl Cries And Laughs Uncontrollably At The Doctor's Office (VIDEO)

Most kids, heck, even most adults, don't like going to the doctor's office. The girl in the video above is no exception.

But what happens when the doctor in question -- a dermatologist -- starts tickling the bottom of the patient's feet? Said pig-tailed patient goes from crying to laughing in a matter of seconds. And then continues to adorably alternate between crying and laughing for the rest of the visit.

According to the YouTube description of the video, the girl was visiting the dermatologist to have the calluses around a wart 'scraped.' She was terrified it would hurt.

"As it was, it was a little uncomfortable, but also alternated to being quite tickelish too! As this hilarious video shows, she alternates from crying hysterically and laughing hysterically," writes moonstarz01 on YouTube.

Possibly the sweetest visit to the doctor to be caught on tape. Ever.

Where to Download Microsoft Office 2013?

Microsoft Office 2013 is the new version of Microsoft Office that you can download and install on any Windows 7 or 8 computer.

Microsoft is expected to release a new version of Office, called Microsoft Office 2013 (or Office 15) early next year. The new Office, the release version of which is already available for download to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, sports a minimalist interface and, among other features, is very tightly integrated with SkyDrive.

If you aren’t an MSDN/Technet subscriber, you can still download and install Microsoft Office 2013 as long as your computer is running Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Microsoft Office 2013

Where can I download Microsoft Office 2013

Option A: You can go to office.com/preview and download the full-featured edition of Office 2013 that includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, and Microsoft Access (no Visio here). You can install this version on up to 5 PCs using your Microsoft account.

This is actually Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium Preview and what’s unique here is that you can get Office running on your computer within minutes of hitting the install button. This uses Microsoft’s Click-To-Run installation technology – you just have to download a 500KB installer and it “streams” the Microsoft Office applications to your computer.

The downside is that you have to install the entire Office package and second, this isn’t the final release of Office but a “preview” edition (version 15.0.4128.1025).

Option B: The other option is that you download the Microsoft Office 2013 installer from the Technet website (all you need is a Windows Live ID). Unlike the preview edition of Office, this one is the “final” Office Professional Plus 2013 release (version 15.0.4433.1506) that will continue to work for 60 days from the date of installation.

In order to install this version of Office, you’ll be required to download the full MSI installer (666 MB, OfficeProfessionalPlus_x86_en-us.img) but the advantage is that you can choose which Office programs should be installed on the computer.

Which Microsoft Office 2013 edition should I download?

Microsoft Office 2013 Pro is available as a 60-day trial while there’s no exact expiry date fixed for Office 365 Preview. Microsoft says that Office Preview will expire approximately 60 days after Office 2013 becomes available in that market. You will thus have more time to play with Office 2013 with the preview release.

Office 365 Preview can be installed alongside an older copy of Microsoft Office whereas in the case of Office 2013 Professional, it will override your existing installation.

One more thing. The Office 2013 preview release streams very quickly (click to run) and you don’t even have to be an administrator of your computer to install it. That’s not the case with Office 2013 Pro.

Microsoft hasn’t specified an exact release date for Microsoft Office 2013 but if you buy a licence of Microsoft Office 2010 now, you will get a free upgrade to Office 2013.
