4 Ways to Ruin Guest Posting by Turning it into Spam

Undoubtedly, guest blogging is a favored strategy for those looking to acquire links from top quality niche sites. Prominent blog owners are usually inundated with emails asking whether they accept guest articles. Since guest blogging or guest posting is a popular means for self and blog promotion, Google is keeping a close eye on how blog owners and authors If operate with their posts. While guest posting is beneficial and powerful as the site owner receives fresh content while the guest blogger receives a link, it comes with its own set of pitfalls.

If you aren’t too familiar with guest posting and the key principles behind how to operate, it’s easy to make mistakes. In fact, you could easily become a spammer if your guest articles are poorly constructed.

Here are four ways which can turn your guest posting efforts into spam which not only harms your online reputation, but also your business.

#1. Crank Out Guest Posts (One After Another)

The first and foremost point of guest posting or guest blogging is that it isn’t another form of article marketing. When you are either invited or accepted to do a guest blog post, you are expected to bring something of value to the table.

No blog owner wants to see recycled, poorly constructed content which adds zero value to their audience being  sent for review. There are a number of ‘would be bloggers’ who mass produce low quality articles and class them as guest posts with the view of pumping them out to as many blog owners as they can in the hope someone will accept.

This is when guest blogging starts to become spam. If you want to make the most of your  opportunity (and so you should), you should take the time to study the site owner’s blog, the type of audience they receive by reading through their comments and of course, the niche they are focused in.

The true weight of anchor text on SEO results has diminished since our favorite animal updates late last year. Google reduced the relevance of anchor text because it was being heavily manipulated by a number of online marketers. Yes, on the back of Google’s Panda and Penguin updates, you need to maintain a variety of anchor text links. If you draw your attention entirely on money keywords and manipulate the anchor text through guest posting, you are a perpetrator of spam activity which is damaging to your site’s health.  I don’t need to remind  you about this, the results will show in due course (and they won’t be good).

When guest blogging , choose and use anchor text in a way that looks natural to Google and the other search engines.

This one drives me crazy, even when operating my personal blog – I receive countless guest posting requests from individuals who don’t have established author accounts set up. In fact, some lazy guest bloggers set up fake Google+ accounts for the primary hope of being accepted as a guest blogger.

Guest posting is not child’s play – it’s for real authors who are looking to establish a personal brand for themselves. If you want to maximize the benefits of guest posting, why not establish yourself as a real author and try to set up your personal social media profiles in the process.  8/10 times I personally turn down guest posting requests if the author doesn’t have an active Google+ account – social proof is too important in today’s world.

Are you familiar with the concept of AuthorRank?

#4. Buy Social Shares

Last but certainly not least, another infamous method of turning guest posting into spam can result off the back of purchasing hundreds of social shares for your guest articles. If your guest post truly adds value, there is no need to purchase fake social shares – the blog’s audience will share the article openly! Instead of consuming your energy on guest posting strategies to manipulate the fame of your poorly constructed guest post, why not divert your attention to writing a top quality guest post which will naturally be a success with this new audience you otherwise wouldn’t have reached.

Use your guest articles to provide real value to readers. In this way, you’ll showcase your knowledge in a particular niche and build your brand in the process. This can lead to further opportunities to guest post or potentially a situation where a reader employs your services – the opportunities are simply endless.

Need Advise on Forum Posting

My favorite way to get quick, fast SEO done and get some good framework for my site is by article & video marketing. I'm not that good at ranking videos, but just having one and letting it sit there gives it link juice because you have a link to your website on a high authority site that google trusts (YouTube).

You also write 3 articles based around one keyword with 15k-75k monthly searches. Stick to lower with medium competition if you're newer, or you can go higher with high competition if you're a little more seasoned. Focus on one keyword every 2 weeks.

You post those articles and you also spin them -- http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/tutorials/the-ultimate-guide-to-tiered-link-building-part-1/]Matthew Woodward has some amazing tutorials about this exact method here: MatthewWoodward.co.uk/tutorials/the-ultimate-guide-to-tiered-link-building-part-1[/url] . No affiliation. He advertises a lot of great programs in the video that are really worth it if you can afford it, but if you can't there are slightly cheaper alternatives. You may need to find cheap or free programs that only do one thing at a time, but this can really cut costs. I do almost everything manually myself, and after I see it be successful in a certain niche I start building up Tier 3 links.

Once you've gone through at lesat your first two weeks focusing on a medium competition keyword with as close to 30k searches as possible, start collecting a list of forums and make sure you organize them. I prefer to use a multi-columned excel sheet.

In Column 1, I list the name of the Forum
In Column 2, I list the PR of the Forum
In Column 3, I list the URL of the Forum

Then, I have a separate documents for EACH forum. In this document I list it as so:

NAME OF FORUM
Title Of Post I've Made | Link To The Post | # Of Posts Thread Has | # Of Uniques From Post | Date
-blank if it's about the same post- | -blank if it's about hte same post | Updated # Of Posts Thread Has | # Of Uniques From Post | Date

I make it so I can sort any of the columns, so I can specifically sort by highest number of uniques a post generated. Then I check to see what elements are in my post -- was it controversial? Was it funny? Did something about it go viral? etc. etc. so I can continue to repeat the same technique.

When forums consistently perform at less than 50% of the average, I stop posting there because it's personally not worth my time. However, it could possibly be worth it to outsource posting to other employees and delegate the responsibility.

Generally, my best performing forum posts in every niche I can think of have been posts to current news events. The more controversial the better, but just general stats and info works as well.

Is Guest Posting the Most Logical Approach?

Getting your site or blog noticed when you first start can be an mind boggling task.  In fact, this is the number one reason why people start blogging and simply quit.  Why?  Because, they are getting no traffic and feel they are expending all their effort on writing and getting no satisfaction from it.  This would be similar to writing in a journal and asking your journal to answer you back.  It’s probably not going to happen. If you get it to happen let me know!Is guest blogging the best approach

Way back quite sometime ago, I remember wanting to be successful online really bad.

Tried everything from Paul and Angela’s backlinks (no longer effective), forum marketing, article marketing, video marketing, blog commenting, press releases, etc.

Nothing seemed to be nearly as powerful as guest posting. Why? Because, I didn’t get a lot of engagement with some of those tactics.

On top of that, a lot of those strategies are very time consuming.  However, I am not stating that you shouldn’t mix up your strategies because they can be effective as well.  I found out something about myself though.  I really liked guest posting because I never knew who I was going to meet and so often people would ask me to post on their blogs after they saw another guest post that wrote.

How awesome is that?

But, here is the thing – you need to guest post on authority sites in your niche. I remember back in the day I really knew nothing about blogging.  Then one day I met Ms. Ileane and pitched an idea for a guest post through MyBlogGuest.  I remember this clearly because it was my first time I ever used the system and after sending what seemed like millions of emails, someone actually said to me, “Why don’t you check out the popular guest blogging service called MyBlogGuest if you are trying to find guest blogging opportunities.”  I did and that’s honestly how I discovered the benefits of guest posting and landed my first guest post on Basic Blog Tips.

A lot of persistence combined with mindlessly working until something clicked.  I remember at the time I had no clue Ms. Ileane ran a very successful blog. I was strictly SEO at the time.  But, I noticed something big.  I got a ton of traffic from my guest post on her blog.  Still not knowing that she was a very successful WordPress blogger and had a great following and implemented tons of social media and networked her blog exceptionally well; it overwhelmed me.

Now let’s fast forward to the present day. I’m no longer just an SEO (madman, well that is debatable), but social media expert (somewhat), blogger, and full time affiliate marketer.  It’s really crazy how stuff worked out!  But, who cares about me right?

Go to Fiverr.com and find someone that has a SEOmoz account (I have one so I just use mine, but unless you want to pay $100 a month the 5 dollar trick works).  You can have them run a backlink report on authority sites in your niche.  To find out who is an authority check the Alexa Rank and take note of how many comments they get on each of their post.  Make sure you sort the list by domain authority and contact everyone that is relevant in your niche.  It might take a couple days to get a response, but it will happen.  Also, don’t use Fiverr for backlink building – they are junk!Once you have done your first guest posting post ask for referrals.  This is a great way to get more authority sites in which you can post on.  I can’t count how many times I have done this and it’s true the better you network online the easier life online is.  Keep a Excel spreadsheet of your contacts for these guest post and don’t be scared to send an email once in awhile to see if they have any referrals.  Over time you will be surprised on how many contacts you have.I take it one step further once I make a guest post.  When I see all the comments as long as they leave a quality comment I will stop by their blog and leave a quality comment.  Not a comment that is like wow I really liked this post or something (we all know when we see that they probably didn’t read the post and just want a backlink).  If their blog is relevant to mine and I like it I usually approach them with a guest post idea or better yet ask them what they want you to write about.  It’s all about adding value to their site, not yourself! Now back to MyBlogGuest.com, post a thread on the forums for people to write on your blog. I know it sounds weird on why I am doing this.  But, have ideas of stuff you want to cover and ask them to write an article on that.  Once, they do and you go over it and put your own special touch to it then ask them for referrals, and since you helped them they are more willing to help you with your guest posting.  It works great and I love this tactic. Some newer tactics that people might have heard of is using Triberr.com. They are a goldmine for finding guest posting opportunities. True, they are a blogging syndication site, but they do have a section called bonfires. These are simply a fancy word for people that gather around to network with other likeminded bloggers. What you’re going to look for is the section called “looking for guest authors”. Over the past months I have came into contact with various people that I would have never been able to reach via email.Another site I am loving right now is BlogEngage. Not only do they syndicate your content automatically, but its like a mini network where you can do a blog search and send personal messages to people. What I do is approach people via personal message and ask for a guest posting opportunity. Just like Triberr.com this is more personal that filling out content forms in hopes of getting a guest posting on authority sites.BizSugar is another site; just like the two above they are a great place to syndicate your content. However, I have found that if you actively participate on their website you can really make some strong connections which would be very hard to obtain without their website. It’s all about making relationships with people in order to provide them with quality content, in which you’ll receive an awesome link to your website.

Really, the possibilities are endless and if you work hard at it you will see excellent results and no longer stress over a blog or website that isn’t ever getting noticed.   Lastly, make sure you are writing awesome content for their blog.  Don’t send them some rehashed article on how to do article marketing or something lame like that.  Make it interesting and use your own voice.

What all tips and tricks can you add to getting good quality guest post? Also, what do you find the most effective ways to get started with guest posting?

A More Effective Way of Posting Links on Facebook Pages

Make a simple change to the way you post links on Facebook Pages and more fans are then likely to see your content in their Facebook news feed.

Facebook Share Statistics

Your Facebook Page has thousands of fans but when you share a link on that page, however interesting that link may be, it gets little or no attention. Why?

Well, your fans aren’t checking your Facebook Page and for them to see your link, it has to appear in their respective news feeds. The big challenge is how do you make that happen?

Facebook obviously has algorithms in place that decide what content should be highlighted in a user’s news feed but here’s a quick tip that may increase the likelihood of your content appearing in your fans’ news feeds.

The idea is that you should avoid posting links as links. Instead, upload a large-sized photo and put the original link in the description of the picture. You may see some examples on the Digital Inspiration Page.

Facebook Pages with Photos

Earlier, around 10K Facebook users would notice links posted on the labnol.org Facebook Page. Ever since I switched the posting style from link-only to picture+link, the average viewership of posts has jumped north as is evident in the above screenshot.

It maybe a good idea to put the link at the beginning of a photo’s description as Facebook will only display the first 3 lines of the description in the news feed. Also, consider using short URLs as you then get more space for the putting text in those 3 lines.

The other advantage is that your Facebook Fans can switch your page’s Photo Stream and get a visual archive of all your recent posts.

And this approach works on Google Plus as well (see example).
