CBS Sports Chairman: No Regrets On Kevin Ware Injury Coverage
NEW YORK — The chairman of CBS Sports had no regrets about banning further replays of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware's gruesome broken leg and says if anyone wants to watch it on the Internet, that's fine with him.
CBS aired two quick replays Sunday from a wide enough distance for viewers to see the leg land awkwardly, but not any blood or bone. It hasn't been shown since on CBS.
"In today's world, if you want to see a piece of video instantaneously that you just saw on television, there are a million ways to do that," Sean McManus said Monday. "I've seen statistics on the millions of views this piece of footage has had on YouTube and I have no problem with that."
Ware was injured after attempting to block a shot in the Cardinals' regional final victory over Duke. The sight of his tibia bone protruding from his skin left coach Rick Pitino and his teammates in tears. Ware was operated on later Sunday and is expected to watch Louisville's Final Four appearance Saturday from the bench in Atlanta.
The network received praise for restraint, although McManus said he knew people would say CBS should have shown it more because the network was in a position to document history.
Several postings of CBS' coverage were quickly available with a search for Ware's name Monday afternoon.
"If people want to go watch the footage for whatever reason, they have a right to do so," McManus said. "I just didn't think we had any obligation to be the facilitator of putting that footage back on the screen. We documented it, we described it and we showed it, and I think that was enough."
It's considerably different from when Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann broke his leg during a Monday Night Football game in 1985. It was equally horrific, with bone jutting through skin. Back then, about the only way a viewer could see it again is if a television producer decided to show the replay, said Jeff Billings, a sports media professor at the University of Alabama.
Aside from the availability of footage online now, many viewers have DVRs that enabled them to replay the incident as much as they wanted, Billings said.
"Current technology makes it a whole lot easier for them to take the high road," he said.
CBS concentrated on the methods it had to tell the story that others did not have – access to players and coaches and pictures of their reactions, he said.
The unedited video was hard to find on national news outlets within 24 hours, when it was still a fresh news story. CNN aired the sequence, but blurred out Ware's leg so the break was not visible. Fox News Channel and MSNBC did not show the video, representatives said.
ABC's "Good Morning America" showed footage, again with the leg blurred. NBC's "Today" show and the CBS morning news program did not show it.
At ESPN, executives set specific guidelines: Producers had discretion to use it on their own programs but they were to only show it once, not air it in slow motion and warn viewers in advance. Through Monday afternoon, spokesman Josh Krulewitz said he did not believe the network had shown it.
McManus said CBS producers had not discussed whether the footage will be seen again; opportunities may come if Ware shows up at the Final Four this weekend. But he said he didn't see any reason why it should be.
"I just think that it's not necessary," he said. "It's not journalistically important that we do that now because we told the story. I think we'll move on from that footage."
Decisions like the one made by McManus and his producers are made by broadcasters globally.
In Britain, sports broadcasters often self-censor footage they feel might distress viewers.
Often an incident, such as a dangerous tackle in football, will be frozen at the point of contact to judge a referee's decision but no further footage will be shown.
Sky Sports, which is operated by BSkyB, chose not to show replays in 2008 after then-Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva's left leg was broken following a tackle by Martin Taylor during a Premier League match at Birmingham.
During an FA Cup match being broadcast globally in March 2012, then-Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest on the pitch at Tottenham.
ESPN's British channel, which was broadcasting the match live, showed no close-ups as Muamba, who survived, received treatment on the turf, instead it focused on the reaction of other players or wide shots of the stadium.

Sports Illustrated Male Swimsuit Issue Is A 'Great Idea,' Says Carson Kressley
Carson Kressley is now starring in "NEWSical the Musical." After two days of press appearances in New York, cover model Kate Upton and her friends in the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition hopped on a private flight to Las Vegas, where they will continue promoting the iconic issue. That barely dressed group might have some surprising new faces in the future: Major changes are being suggested for the swimsuit issue, including featuring male models.
"I think that is a great idea," TV personality Carson Kressley tells The Huffington Post. "However, Sports Illustrated is in the business of selling magazines. When your readership is a bunch of guys interested in sports, you certainly want to do an edition once a year featuring hot chicks in bikinis. I think Martha Stewart Living or someone [else] that has a big women’s readership should do a big swimsuit issue with men."
He adds, "Who would I like to see on the cover -- David Beckham! If they do it, I will style it for free. We will do the fitting and then decide on who should wear what."
Carson is making his off-Broadway debut in "NEWSical the Musical," where he sings, dances and makes fun of pop culture, including a sketch in which he plays his "Dancing With the Stars" friend Nancy Grace.
"Nancy is the best sport. She sent flowers on opening night and is coming to see the show when she’s in town," says Carson. "I have a longstanding relationship with Oprah, who we do in the show. We are not making fun of people in a mean way. I think she would like it. What you see with Oprah is what you get. She’s a kind, thoughtful, funny, compassionate, real woman. Why she resonates so well with everyone is because she really is who she is. She’s famous for being Oprah."
Carson also has great fun at the expense of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," a show for which he takes some responsibility.
"I think the idea behind the Honey Boo Boo sketch was to point out the insanity of it all," the former "Queer Eye" star laughs. "I do feel responsible -- reality TV is obviously the most popular mode of entertainment and people find entertainment in a variety of different things. Our hook was gay guys coming into a straight guy's world. A when-two-worlds-collide moment. Nowadays we are into rednecks and 'Duck Dynasty' ... Tomorrow it will be something else. It's just TV for God’s sakes. I don't get into dissecting it. I watch what I like, and I use it for what it's meant for, which is entertainment."
Carson can be seen in "NEWSical the Musical" until March 3.
As for the idea of a male swimsuit issue, it might not be so farfetched. "Great idea. You never know," a spokesperson for Sports Illustrated responded to The Huffington Post.

Students With Disabilities Have Right To Play School Sports, Obama Administration Tells Schools
When Kareem Dale, now a special advisor to President Barack Obama, was in high school, all he wanted to do was wrestle. But as a student who was partially blind, that wasn't easy.
Dale's school made it possible for him to participate in the sport by creating a rule that wrestlers always needed to be touching their opponent. "It allowed me to wrestle throughout public high school," Dale said. "That experience of wrestling gave me confidence, it made me healthier, it was really an extraordinary experience."
But hundreds of other students with disabilities may not have had an opportunity in school sports, a 2010 Government Accountability Office report suggested. The U.S. Education Department's Office of Civil Rights on Friday is sending school districts a 13-page guidance document that spells out the rights of students with disabilities to participate in school athletics.
Laura Kaloi, the public policy director for the National Center for Learning Disabilities, said the guidance was long delayed. "The GAO issued this report and the Department of Education kind of sat on it," Kaloi said. "I'm really happy to see finally that the Office of Civil Rights is putting out this guidance, making these rights crystal clear."
The guidance follows 84 complaints to the Office of Civil Rights from parents of students with disabilities over the last four years.
The guidance document outlines five principles with specific examples for enforcement of the law, according to Seth Galanter, acting assistant secretary for the Education Department Office of Civil Rights. Schools can't rely on generalizations of a student's disabilities when crafting their sports offerings. They must consider each student and provide "reasonable modifications" to games, but not "fundamental alterations" that would significantly change the game or give students with disabilities an advantage. It requires that sports programs be safe.
School districts also have to provide qualified students with required aides -- during school and after school. For example, a student with diabetes who has a school aide monitor his blood sugar and insulin during the school day is entitled to that aide during extracurricular gymnastics.
The guidance highlights that the "unnecessary separation of kids with disabilities is both discriminatory and harmful," Galanter said.
Parents often run into obstacles when trying to get modifications for their children with disabilities, said Garth Tymerson, a Wisconsin professor who prepares physical education instructors for teaching special-education kids. He said the guidance "will put some fuel into the fire of people who want to get more help." Tymerson added that sports participation is particularly important for students who have disabilities because their obesity rates tend to be higher.
“Sports can provide invaluable lessons in discipline, selflessness, passion and courage, and this guidance will help schools ensure that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to benefit from the life lessons they can learn on the playing field or on the court,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a statement.
The issue is personal for some parents, including Kaloi. Her son has dyslexia and dysgraphia. Once, an evaluator explained to her son that he had difficulty processing number sequences. His eyes lit up. "Wow, is that why I can't remember the jumprope routine in physical education?" Kaloi remembers him asking. "My husband and I felt horrible. We focused on the reading, the writing and social studies, but the first thing in my son's mind was, 'Why can't I keep up the jumprope routine?' It made him feel like he couldn't do what the other kids were doing. A lightbulb went off for me as a parent."
But Kaloi said she's unsure how much the guidance will help students. "It takes a really savvy parent to put this document down on the table and say, 'Look, you're doing x, y and z and this document says you can't,'" she said. "But it shows that schools needed a reminder. … We want the same thing any parent wants: We just want them participating in art and music, we want them sitting with friends at lunch."
