Kevin Berthia, California Man, Reunites With Officer 8 Years After Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Attempt

In March 2005, Kevin Berthia climbed over the railing of the Golden Gate Bridge. Desperate and distressed, the young man was ready to jump to his death.

But thanks to the compassionate intervention of a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer named Kevin Briggs, Berthia was talked off the bridge, and today, the 30-year-old is happily married with two children.

Last Wednesday, Briggs and Berthia reunited for the first time since 2005. According to the AP, the emotional reunion was part of a public service ceremony organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to honor the life-saving work of the CHP.

During the ceremony, Berthia was given the opportunity to present an award to the man who saved -- and transformed -- his life.

“It was phenomenal,” Berthia told Yahoo News of seeing Briggs again. “I didn’t know what I was going to feel, or how I was going to react. But when I first saw him, he walked up me and I just shook his hand. It felt like I had known this man my whole life. The nerves weren’t there. It was just two old friends being reunited.”

Eight years ago, Briggs, who has been dubbed the "Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge" for the hundreds of lives he's saved, spent about an hour talking to Berthia. The young man told Briggs about his troubles and the veteran officer, who has now worked for the CHP for more than 20 years, responded in turn with kindness and hope.

"He never made me feel guilty for being in the situation I was in," Berthia, who still lives in the Bay Area, told the AP. "He made me feel like, 'I understand why you are here, but there are alternatives.' That an individual who doesn't even know me could listen to me and hear my story and show me compassion gave me another reason maybe to try again."

Though the Golden Gate Bridge is known as being one of the world's most active suicide locations, it is also a place where lives are frequently being saved. According to the AP, thousands of people have been talked out of committing suicide at Golden Gate by the CHP, U.S. Park Police and bridge security officers.

"I've never actually counted the number, but it's been numerous people," Briggs previously told Yahoo of the number of people he's saved. "Maybe two a month."

Though Briggs is unquestionably a hero, the humble officer insists that the life-saving work is a team effort.

"What I'd like to get across now is the amount of people I work with and what they go through with these efforts," he told San Rafael Patch last year. "We really do try to help the people out there. Each situation is independent of the other. I just try to get to the heart of the matter in each case, and I would expect my officers to do the same."

It's no secret--the mobile app industry is booming, and that means tons of new companies are cropping up to provide the latest innovations in mobile technology.

With nearly six billion mobile subscribers worldwide--that's 87 percent of the world's population--and 300,000 apps developed in just the past three years, it's no wonder entrepreneurs are looking to jump into the booming market. A few key startups have emerged in the industry, latching onto the opportunity to innovate with new technologies and potentially create a major name for themselves in the coming years.

Check out these five promising companies that are already transforming the mobile industry:

1. StartApp

StartApp, a mobile search engine specializing in the monetization of Android apps, recently landed $4.3 million in startup funding. The Israeli startup, founded in 2010, partners with app developers to help them to monetize their free applications.

Here's how it works: when users download a StartApp-integrated app, a new search icon appears on their home screen. Whenever the icon is used for a search, StartApp generates revenue, and developers get a cut. In July 2012, StartApp announced its platform had been downloaded half a billion times. As more and more developers look for ways to profit from the mobile boom, StartApp is one company helping along the way.

2. Codename One

With a variety of mobile platforms available--from the iPhone to Android to Blackberry--developers often struggle to create apps that work across each different device.

That's why Codename One has developed open-source software to save developers the time and resources it takes to get their apps launched. The software allows developers to write code for a mobile application only once in Java and have it work across all platforms--iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone 7, and J2ME devices. By streamlining the code writing process, Codename One is helping entrepreneurs to dramatically improve their mobile efforts.

3. Jibe Mobile

Founded in 2006 with $9.1 million in startup funding, Jibe Mobile previously offered a mobile app for sharing information on social networking sites. Since then, the company has shifted gears to focus on developing a platform for app developers to add real-time features to their apps, including video chatting, multiplayer social gaming features, and VoIP calls. The platform allows developers to integrate a video calling feature (akin to Skype) into their apps quickly.

With offices in London, Tokyo, Mountain View, and Dusseldorf, the company's global presence means it will continue to be a leader in mobile app development throughout 2013.

4. Trademob

Founded in 2010, Trademob is a startup that provides a mobile app marketing platform to help advertisers win high app store rankings for their apps. Boasting $15 million in startup funding, the company provides two different technologies to help app developers. One is tracking for mobile app marketing campaign to help developers learn where they're getting traffic--email, Facebook, websites, etc--to better understand their performance. Trademob also offers optimization technology that helps developers to increase ROI.

By helping to make apps more visible in the overcrowded market, Trademob is helping companies to snag more downloads and win active users.

5. Flurry

Launched in 2005, Flurry helps companies to build, measure, advertise, and monetize their mobile applications. The company boasts $50.5 million in total startup funding and has offices in San Francisco, New York, and London. It also recently acquired startup Trestle.

Flurry's AppSpot platform helps developers to generate advertising revenue for their apps. It leverages a data set collected from an impressive 700 million mobile devices each month through Flurry Analytics. By helping app developers to better target their key audiences, Flurry stands to dramatically impact the monetization of the mobile app industry.

Ricin Letters Suspect: Hearing To Focus On Paul Kevin Curtis' Mental State

OXFORD, Miss. — Officials have cancelled the third day of a hearing for the Mississippi man accused of mailing poisoned letters to President Barack Obama, a U.S. senator and a local judge.

Christi McCoy, defense attorney for Paul Kevin Curtis, says that federal authorities and defense attorneys will speak to reporters at 5 p.m. CDT about the case.

The announcement came 90 minutes after the hearing was supposed to start in federal court. Lawyers spent that time conferring with the judge. Later, Curtis and family members were escorted into a meeting room with his lawyers, followed by a probation officer.

On Monday, an FBI agent said federal authorities didn't find any ricin in Curtis' Corinth, Miss., home or vehicle.

McCoy says the search results bolster Curtis' claims of innocence.

The third day of a hearing for the Mississippi man accused of mailing poisoned letters to President Barack Obama, a U.S. senator and a local judge was expected to include testimony on his mental state after authorities acknowledged they have found little physical evidence so far.

Christi McCoy, defense attorney for Paul Kevin Curtis, said Tuesday's hearing was expected to include testimony from David Daniels, a Tupelo, Miss., attorney who says Curtis threatened him after a rehearsal for an Elvis impersonators' show Daniels helped organize in 2002. Also, a law enforcement official was expected to testify about Curtis' suicide attempt in Chicago in 1991.

On Monday, FBI Agent Brandon Grant testified that Friday searches of Curtis' vehicle and house in Corinth, Miss., found no ricin, ingredients for the poison, or devices used to make it. A search of Curtis' computers found no evidence he researched making ricin.

"There was no apparent ricin, castor beans or any material there that could be used for the manufacturing, like a blender or something," Grant testified. He speculated that Curtis could have thrown away the processor. Grant said technicians are now doing a "deep dive" on the suspect's computers after initially finding no "dirty words" indicating Curtis had searched for information on ricin.

McCoy has insisted there is no physical evidence connecting Curtis to the mailings and that he may have been framed.

Through McCoy, Curtis has denied involvement in letters sent to Obama, Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker, and a Lee County, Miss., judge. The first of the letters was found April 15.

"The searches are concluded, not one single shred of evidence was found to indicate Kevin could have done this," McCoy told reporters after the hearing.

U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Allan Alexander ended the hearing after lunch Monday, citing a personal schedule conflict. After the hearing concluded, McCoy questioned why Curtis would have signed the letters "I am KC and I approve this message," a phrase he had used on his Facebook page.

McCoy said in court that someone may have framed Curtis, suggesting that a former business associate of Curtis' brother, a man with whom Curtis had an extended exchange of angry emails, may have set him up.

Still, Grant testified that authorities believe they have the right suspect.

"Given the right mindset and the Internet and the acquisition of material, other people could be involved. However, given information right now, we believe we have the right individual," he said.

Grant said lab analysis shows the poison in the letters was in a crude form that could have been created by grinding castor beans in a food processor or coffee grinder.

The detention and preliminary hearing began Friday in U.S. District Court in Oxford, Miss. More witnesses besides Grant were expected Tuesday.

Federal investigators believe the letters were mailed by Curtis, an Elvis impersonator who family members say suffers from bipolar disorder.

Grant testified Monday that processing codes printed on the letter indicated they had been mailed from Tupelo, Miss., and that investigators were still trying to figure out from the codes exactly where they had been mailed from.

Grant testified Friday that authorities tried to track down the sender of the letters by using a list of Wicker's constituents with the initials KC, the same initials in the letters. Grant said the list was whittled from thousands to about 100 when investigators isolated the ones who lived in an area that would have a Memphis, Tenn., postmark, which includes many places in north Mississippi. He said Wicker's staff recognized Curtis as someone who had written the senator before.

All the envelopes and stamps were self-adhesive, Grant said Monday, meaning they won't yield DNA evidence. He said thus far the envelopes and letters haven't yielded any fingerprints.

McCoy said the evidence linking the 45-year-old to the crime has hinged on his writings posted online, which were accessible to anyone.

CBS Sports Chairman: No Regrets On Kevin Ware Injury Coverage

NEW YORK — The chairman of CBS Sports had no regrets about banning further replays of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware's gruesome broken leg and says if anyone wants to watch it on the Internet, that's fine with him.

CBS aired two quick replays Sunday from a wide enough distance for viewers to see the leg land awkwardly, but not any blood or bone. It hasn't been shown since on CBS.

"In today's world, if you want to see a piece of video instantaneously that you just saw on television, there are a million ways to do that," Sean McManus said Monday. "I've seen statistics on the millions of views this piece of footage has had on YouTube and I have no problem with that."

Ware was injured after attempting to block a shot in the Cardinals' regional final victory over Duke. The sight of his tibia bone protruding from his skin left coach Rick Pitino and his teammates in tears. Ware was operated on later Sunday and is expected to watch Louisville's Final Four appearance Saturday from the bench in Atlanta.

The network received praise for restraint, although McManus said he knew people would say CBS should have shown it more because the network was in a position to document history.

Several postings of CBS' coverage were quickly available with a search for Ware's name Monday afternoon.

"If people want to go watch the footage for whatever reason, they have a right to do so," McManus said. "I just didn't think we had any obligation to be the facilitator of putting that footage back on the screen. We documented it, we described it and we showed it, and I think that was enough."

It's considerably different from when Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann broke his leg during a Monday Night Football game in 1985. It was equally horrific, with bone jutting through skin. Back then, about the only way a viewer could see it again is if a television producer decided to show the replay, said Jeff Billings, a sports media professor at the University of Alabama.

Aside from the availability of footage online now, many viewers have DVRs that enabled them to replay the incident as much as they wanted, Billings said.

"Current technology makes it a whole lot easier for them to take the high road," he said.

CBS concentrated on the methods it had to tell the story that others did not have – access to players and coaches and pictures of their reactions, he said.

The unedited video was hard to find on national news outlets within 24 hours, when it was still a fresh news story. CNN aired the sequence, but blurred out Ware's leg so the break was not visible. Fox News Channel and MSNBC did not show the video, representatives said.

ABC's "Good Morning America" showed footage, again with the leg blurred. NBC's "Today" show and the CBS morning news program did not show it.

At ESPN, executives set specific guidelines: Producers had discretion to use it on their own programs but they were to only show it once, not air it in slow motion and warn viewers in advance. Through Monday afternoon, spokesman Josh Krulewitz said he did not believe the network had shown it.

McManus said CBS producers had not discussed whether the footage will be seen again; opportunities may come if Ware shows up at the Final Four this weekend. But he said he didn't see any reason why it should be.

"I just think that it's not necessary," he said. "It's not journalistically important that we do that now because we told the story. I think we'll move on from that footage."

Decisions like the one made by McManus and his producers are made by broadcasters globally.

In Britain, sports broadcasters often self-censor footage they feel might distress viewers.

Often an incident, such as a dangerous tackle in football, will be frozen at the point of contact to judge a referee's decision but no further footage will be shown.

Sky Sports, which is operated by BSkyB, chose not to show replays in 2008 after then-Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva's left leg was broken following a tackle by Martin Taylor during a Premier League match at Birmingham.

During an FA Cup match being broadcast globally in March 2012, then-Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest on the pitch at Tottenham.

ESPN's British channel, which was broadcasting the match live, showed no close-ups as Muamba, who survived, received treatment on the turf, instead it focused on the reaction of other players or wide shots of the stadium.

Louisville To Final Four: Peyton Siva Leads Cardinals Past Duke 85-63 After Injury To Kevin Ware

INDIANAPOLIS — Crying and shaken by the sight of Kevin Ware writhing on the court, his right leg splintered, Rick Pitino and his Louisville players had no idea how they were going to pull it together with a half still left to play and a Final Four berth on the line.

Ware showed them the way.

"I don't think we could have gathered ourselves – I know I couldn't have – if Kevin didn't say over and over again, `Just go win the game,'" Pitino said. "I don't think we could have gone in the locker room with a loss after seeing that. We had to gather ourselves. We couldn't lose this game for him.

"We just couldn't."

With Russ Smith, Peyton Siva and Gorgui Dieng leading the way, the Cardinals finally shook off their grief early in the second half, erupting for a 13-2 run that Duke was powerless to answer. The 85-63 victory clinched a second straight trip to the Final Four for the top-seeded Cardinals, who are determined to win it all for Ware, a New York City native who moved to the Atlanta area for high school.

The Cardinals (33-5) will play Wichita State in the national semifinals next Saturday. The ninth-seeded Shockers (30-8) added to their streak of upsets with a 70-66 victory over Ohio State on Saturday night.

As the final seconds ticked down, Ware's best friend on the team, Chane Behanan, put on the guard's No. 5 jersey and stood at the end of the bench, screaming. Cardinals fans chanted "Kevin Ware! Kevin Ware!"

"We talked about it every timeout, `Get Kevin home,'" Pitino said.

Smith finished with 23 points and earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the Midwest Region. Siva added 16 while Dieng had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Mason Plumlee had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Duke. But the Blue Devils (30-6) couldn't overcome a poor start by Seth Curry, who scored all 12 of his points in the second half, or their foul trouble.

"I thought we had a chance there, and then, boom," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "That's what they do to teams. They can boom you."

This was the first time Pitino and Krzyzewski had met in the regional finals since that 1992 classic that ended with Christian Laettner's improbable buzzer-beater, a game now considered one of the best in NCAA tournament history.

This game will be remembered, too, but for a very different – and much more somber – reason.

With 6:33 left in the first half, Ware, who has played a key role in Louisville's 14-game winning streak, jumped to try and block Tyler Thornton's 3-point shot. When he landed, Ware's right leg snapped midway between his ankle and knee, the bone skewing almost at a right angle. Ware dropped to the floor right in front of the Louisville bench and, almost in unison, his teammates turned away in horror. Thornton grimaced, putting his hand to his mouth as he turned around.

"I heard it and then I seen what happened, (the bone) come out," Smith said. "I immediately just, like, fell. I almost didn't feel nothing."

Pitino went to help Ware up and then saw the leg, which broke in two places.

"I literally almost threw up," Pitino said, his voice catching. "Then I just wanted to get a towel to get it over that. But all the players came over and saw it."

Louisville forward Wayne Blackshear fell to the floor and Behanan looked as if he was going to be sick on the court, kneeling on his hands and feet. Luke Hancock patted Ware's chest as doctors worked on the sophomore and Smith walked away, pulling his jersey over his eyes. The arena was silent, and several fans wept and bowed their heads.

Pitino had tears in his eyes as he tried to console his players. Dieng draped an arm around the shoulders of Smith, who repeatedly wiped at his eyes and shook his head.

"It was really hard for me to pull myself together," Smith said. "I didn't ever think in a million years I would ever see something like that. And that it happened, especially, to a guy like Kevin Ware, I was completely devastated."

As the Cardinals (33-5) gathered at halfcourt to try and regroup before play resumed, Pitino called them over to the sideline, saying Ware wanted to talk to them before he left.

"Basically, the bone popped out of the skin. It broke in two spots," Pitino said. "Remember the bone is six inches out of his leg, and all he's yelling is `Win the game, win the game.' I've never seen anything like that."

Added Siva, "He told us countless times: `Just go win this game for me. Just go win this game. Don't worry about me, I'm fine. Just go win this game.' I don't know how he did it. I don't know how he got strength to do it, but he told us to go out there and win."

News of the injury dominated social media. Joe Theismann, whose NFL career ended with a horrific broken leg, said on Twitter, "Watching Duke/ Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware."

Pitino wiped away tears as Ware, whom Smith described as the Cardinals' "little brother" was wheeled off the court. Surgeons reset his leg and inserted a rod in his right tibia during a 2-hour operation at Methodist Hospital. Ware is expected to remain in Indianapolis until at least Tuesday, and Pitino said he, his son Richard and the Cardinals' equipment manager planned to visit the player later Sunday night and again Monday morning.

"He'll come back," Pitino said. "We'll get Kevin back as good as new."

But when play resumed, it was clear the Cardinals' minds were elsewhere. They missed four of their next five shots along with two free throws, and were uncharacteristically sloppy. But they regrouped after a timeout, with Smith's finger roll sparking a 12-6 run to finish the half that gave them a 35-32 lead.

Smith picked up where he left off at the start of the second half, making all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to give Louisville a 38-32 lead, its largest of the game to that point.

But just as he did against Michigan State, Curry got hot after halftime, making two 3s in the first three minutes. A Plumlee dunk tied the game at 42.

That, however, was all Louisville needed.

Clawing for every rebound, diving on the floor for loose balls and cranking the intensity up even higher on their ferocious defense, the Cardinals were not going to lose.

And everyone, Duke included, knew it.

This was only the second time the Blue Devils have reached the regional finals and failed to make it to the Final Four. The only other time? In 1998, when the Blue Devils lost to eventual national champion Kentucky.

"We got beat by a better team," Krzyzewski said.

Smith made a layup. Siva had a nice jumper at the top of the key, and then followed with a layup. Just like that, Louisville was off. Siva had seven points during the run, which was only halted by a timeout. But Dieng kept it rolling with a jumper and a tip-in. After Plumlee made a pair of free throws, Hancock made a 3 and the roof of the Lucas Oil Stadium nearly blew off.

"When Kevin went down, it was devastating for all of us," Siva said. "We just came together and Kevin Ware really was the reason why we pulled this game out.

"Everybody on the team just wanted to step up for him. For us to show that focus and that determination, we just tried to do it for him."

Kevin Ware Leg Injury: Louisville Guard Suffers Gruesome Broken Bone in Right Leg (VIDEO) [UPDATED]

Louisville guard Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome lower right leg injury against Duke in the Elite Eight of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

"I don't know if in basketball I've ever seen one like that," Jim Nantz of CBS said as medical personnel attended to Ware. Trainers quickly covered his leg with towels due to the graphic nature of the injury.

With the sophomore who attended high school near Atlanta in agony near the Louisville bench, some of his teammates fell to the floor and later wept over the apparent severity of the injury. Ware had attempted to contest a three-point attempt from Tyler Thornton of Duke when his leg buckled beneath him.

Louisville led 21-20 at the time of the injury. Play was stopped for several minutes before resuming with 6:33 remaining in the first half.

Several minutes after Ware was stretchered off the court, Tracy Wolfson of CBS reported that the team had confirmed it was a broken leg and that the player had been transported to a Methodist Hospital near Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Louisville spokesman Kenny Klein later told The Associated Press that hospital officials indicated Ware was "resting comfortably" before the game was completed and that his pain was "under control."

After Louisville defeated Duke, 85-63, Pitino spoke to Wolfson on the court about Ware.

"The bone's 6 inches out of his leg and all he's yelling is, 'Win the game, win the game,'" Pitino said on the court. "I've not seen that in my life. ... Pretty special young man."

As Louisville celebrated its Final Four berth, Chane Behanan wore Ware's No. 5 jersey.

Nantz' assessment of the injury being the worst he had seen in a basketball game was widely echoed on Twitter by members of the basketball media.

When play resumed after the injury stoppage, the hashtags #WinForWare and #PrayersForWare began trending on Twitter as fans of all teams expressed their support and concern for the injured player.

The graphic nature of the incident reminded many of the devastating leg injury suffered by Joe Theismann in 1985. The former Washington Redskins quarterback was among those whose thoughts were with Ware on Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS — Louisville guard Kevin Ware badly injured his lower right leg during the Midwest Regional final against Duke on Sunday and had to be taken off the court on a stretcher.

A game official told several reporters that a bone snapped. Trainers immediately covered the leg with a towel and placed Ware on a backboard, then lifted him onto a stretcher.

He was taken to nearby Methodist Hospital, according to a statement from tournament officials. Louisville officials said no additional information was immediately available.

The injury occurred with 6:33 left in the first half as Duke's Tyler Thornton made a 3-pointer to get the Blue Devils within 21-20. Ware tried to contest the shot and his leg buckled when he landed, bending gruesomely.

The injury happened in front of the Louisville bench, and the Cardinals were overcome with emotion.

Someone finally pulled Behanan to his feet, but he doubled over and needed a few seconds to gather himself. As Ware was being loaded onto a stretcher, the Cardinals gathered at midcourt until coach Rick Pitino called them over, saying that Ware wanted to talk to them before he left.

Pitino wiped away his eyes as Ware was wheeled out, as did several of the Louisville players.

In the immediate aftermath, those who had been watching the game on television took to social media to express their concern. Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, who famously sustained a broken leg during a Monday night football game against the New York Giants, tweeted that, "Watching Duke/ Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware."

Louisville, the top overall seed in the tourney, went more than 3 minutes without scoring after the injury but regained its composure to take a 35-32 halftime lead.

Kevin Collins Case: San Francisco Police Search Home For Remains Of Boy Missing Since 1984

The San Francisco Police Department and the FBI launched a search on Tuesday believed to be connected to the case of Kevin Collins, a 10-year-old boy whose 1984 disappearance sparked a national campaign against child abduction.

ABC News first reported on the search of a home at Masonic Avenue and Page Street, where the person believed to be responsible for Collins' kidnapping was living at the time of the incident. Investigators have allegedly been digging in the backyard and basement of the property looking for the child's remains.

The SFPD could not verify that the search was related to Collins' disappearance, as the warrant is sealed. However, Public Information Officer Albie Esparza did confirm that officers are searching a property at Page and Masonic, and that the SFPD, the FBI and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office are all involved in the case.

Esparza said that more information may become available once the search is completed.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Collins was last seen on February 10, 1984 while waiting for a bus at the corner of Oak Street and Masonic Avenue after a school basketball practice. Witnesses said Collins was seen talking to a tall, blonde-haired man shortly before he vanished.

In the days following the incident, thousands of fliers, milk cartons, billboards and newspapers circulated photos and information about the boy, prompting a nationwide response. The case eventually inspired abduction prevention efforts, such as the Amber Alert.

UPDATE: San Francisco Police said in a press release Tuesday that several bones were located during the search. According to the SFPD, the bones are believed to be from an animal and not a human, but "further analysis is necessary."

NBA All-Star Rosters 2013: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant Make Starting Lineups

NEW YORK (AP) — Kobe Bryant has been voted to his NBA-record 15th consecutive All-Star start, leading four Los Angeles players into next month's game.

Lakers teammate Dwight Howard and the Clippers' Chris Paul and Blake Griffin will join Bryant in the Western Conference lineup for the Feb. 17 game in Houston. Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant, the MVP of last year's game, rounds out the five.

Kevin Garnett held off Chris Bosh in fan balloting, giving the East two Boston Celtics and two Miami Heat players. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade will represent the defending champions and receive passes from Rajon Rondo. New York's Carmelo Anthony is the other starter.

Bryant finished with 1,591,437 votes, edging James by about 7,800 to finish as the leading vote-getter and break a tie with Shaquille O'Neal, Jerry West and Karl Malone for the most consecutive starting nods.

The NBA's leading scorer is a four-time MVP of the All-Star game and last year became its career scoring leader.

Garnett beat Bosh, who took to Twitter to stump for votes in the final days of balloting, by about 25,000 votes. He tied Bryant and O'Neal for second all-time with his 15th selection behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was elected to 19 games.

It's the second straight year that Los Angeles teams will make up four players. Last year it was Bryant, Paul, Griffin and Andrew Bynum, who was dealt to Philadelphia in part of the deal that sent Howard from Orlando to Los Angeles.

The ballot changed this year, eliminating the center position. Fans were required to vote for three frontcourt players and two guards.

They picked an interesting mix in the East. Anthony and Garnett exchanged words during a game on Jan. 7 and Anthony was suspended a game by the NBA when he tried to confront Garnett afterward in the tunnel area and by the team bus.

Rondo was injured in the playoffs two years ago after getting tangled up with Wade and landing awkwardly on his arm, part of what's become a tense rivalry between the Celtics and Heat.

Reserves will be announced next Thursday. Coaches will vote for seven players in their conferences: two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position, and can't vote for a player on their own team.

With the year winding to a close, I am sure we are all reflecting on 2012, and making resolutions for the New Year. Each year, I start out with the best of intentions when I make my resolutions. Last year for example, I swore I was going to exercise more, and the year before, I had full intentions of learning a new language. Guess what, I am 10 pounds heavier, and I still only speak English except for a few Spanish and French words. Knowing that most resolutions go unachieved, I gave extra thought this year to what I could commit and stick to, and what I came up with was "Doing all I can to help more veterans find employment after serving the nation"

This is one resolution I know I can stick to, and I encourage those employers who are fortunate enough to be hiring this year to also consider making this a business resolution for 2013. There is no shortage of employers who would be open to hiring more veterans, but what I am proposing is for them to adopt a military recruiting program, and to seek out this talent as best they can. With a little focus and effort, we can recruit, hire, and retain some of the best talent our organizations will ever have. These men and women have been entrusted with protecting our way of life and freedoms, so I am sure you will agree that they are more than qualified and capable of working for us. Here are just a few tips to aid you in your efforts.

1. Start a veterans group at your company. Open this up and encourage participation. Too often, veterans do not advertise that they have served for a wide range of reasons, but something as simple as a company veterans group will go a long way. Have the group meet monthly and coordinate activities in the community. The folks who join will be your biggest salespeople in attracting more veterans to your organization.

2. Take the time to understand what the veteran has done in the military, and help them translate that to jobs you may have available. Many times, they only know one or two jobs that match their military occupation code, but with a little help, both sides will quickly realize that they are also qualified for many other jobs. Consider placing a military skills translator on your career page to help them www.veteranrecruiting.jobs is one example

3. Review your company website and career page, and designate a place that clearly sends the message "veterans wanted, needed, and appreciated" Again, this is the difference between being willing to hire, and seeking them out

4. Find recruiting events that are military focused, and participate. My firm hosts virtual career fairs which allow you to recruit veterans nationwide without even having to leave your office. www.veteranrecruiting.com

Of course, there are many other things we can all do to ensure that every veteran who wishes to find work after serving, is able t do so, but the three things above are a great start to us keeping this resolution.
