A Valentine's Day Bouquet Idea That's Inexpensive And Easy To DIY (PHOTOS)

In just a couple of days, florist shops around the world will be bustling with customers looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day bouquet for their loved ones. But if you're not exactly thrilled about spending big bucks for blooms, we don't blame you. The price of roses skyrocket this time of year, and if you're ordering online, who knows if your gift will ever get to its destination.

That's why we've come up with a great way to use grocery store flowers we bought for just $17 (from Epicurean Deli in New York City) and turned them into an expensive-looking arrangement. And while we're completely loving the price tag for this Valentine's Day idea, we’re also pretty excited about the fact that it's more personal than anything you’d get from a professional.

Click through our slideshow to see how you can DIY your own floral arrangement. Want even more Valentine's Day ideas? To complete this craft, you'll need: a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store that are within the same color family (we opted for pinks and reds), a tape measure, pair of scissors, a knife or garden shears, tape, a coffee can (or another canister), decorative paper (we went with book cloth for one canister) and optional embellishments.

First, empty your canister and rinse it out well with water. Then, peel away the label. It's okay if it's not completely clean as it will be covered up.

Take your ruler and measure the height of the can. This will help when you're re-wrapping it with the decorative paper.

After you've figured out how much paper you'll need, cut the desired amount neatly.

Simply wrap the paper around your canister. You can use glue or tape as an adhesive. Add your embellishments if you wish. We went with little wooden and metal hearts we found at our local craft store.

Take the individual flowers and remove all the leaves except the ones closest to the blossom. This will avoid contamination of the water later on.

Using a knife or garden shears, cut the the stem at the desired length at a 45 degree angle. It's important you cut at least one inch off and avoid using household scissors, as they can break the stem.

Finally, place your flowers into the canister. We like to group flowers by hue for a more sophisticated arrangement, but you can arrange them however you like.

This is what our arrangement looked like when we used a peanut can, decorative craft paper and gerbera daisies.

Pretty impressive, huh?
