Michigan School Chief: End Project By Secret Group
East Lansing-- Michigan's school chief on Monday urged the disbanding of a work group that has been secretly developing ways to lower the cost of public education through technology and a funding mechanism that resembles vouchers.
Mike Flanagan, state superintendent of public instruction, said he was pulling a Department of Education employee off the work group on the same day Gov. Rick Snyder began distancing himself from the project started by his administration's chief information officer, David Behen.

The Gun Shop Project, Suicide Prevention Campaign, Effort Of Health Professionals, Gun Dealers
CONCORD, N.H. -- Ralph Demicco has watched the surveillance footage of a man shopping around his store, leaning on the counter and calmly chatting with the clerk before buying the gun he used to take his own life later that day. The man was one of three people, who in the span of a week purchased firearms from Demicco's gun shop and used them to commit suicide.
"I was devastated," Demicco recalled. "At the time, I remember saying over and over, `I just can't believe it.'"
A review of the state medical examiner's records showed that recently purchased firearms were being used in suicides roughly once per month in New Hampshire. Since the string of suicides in 2009, Demicco has joined forces with health professionals and gun dealers in a campaign to help gun stores and firing ranges learn ways to avoid selling or renting a firearm to a suicidal person. The campaign, known as The Gun Shop Project, also encourages gun businesses to share suicide prevention materials with customers.
"It's not that gun owners are more likely to be suicidal or depressed. It's that guns are the most lethal way for someone to take their own life," said Elaine Frank, with the New Hampshire Firearm Safety Coalition. Firearm suicides account for more deaths than all other suicide methods combined and 65 percent of all gun deaths in the U.S., according to figures from 2011 provided by gunpolicy.org, an international group working to reduce gun injuries.
Since the project launched two years ago, groups in 15 states have reached out for guidance or have asked to use its informational posters and brochures. Scott Ridgeway, executive director of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, said his group hopes to distribute those materials to the more than 1,000 gun stores in his state by September. A Maryland gun dealer and an Illinois sheriff's department have also expressed interest in the project, though most of the interest has come from suicide prevention groups.
"When you put suicide prevention in firearm safety terms, it makes it something that's already part of these businesses' mission," said Granger Brown, outreach coordinator for the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. "It changes something that could sound like gun control to being about firearm safety."
Project members hope that media attention from their work and the prominence of the national gun debate will help them draw more attention to preventing firearm suicides. They see it as an opportunity for gun makers to be in the spotlight for a positive reason and said they believe if a major gun manufacturer would sponsor their message, suicide prevention could become a standard part of firearm safety training.
"I would love to see the firearm industry take on this issue the same way the alcohol industry has embraced the idea of the designated driver," said Cathy Barber, project member with the Injury Prevention Research Center at Harvard.
One poster for the group shows two men at a kitchen table, one resting his arm on the other's shoulder, their heads bowed. A pistol and magazine sit before them. The poster reads: "Concerned about a family member or friend? Hold on to their guns." It also lists signs of suicidal behavior.
In August 2011, the group mailed their materials to 65 gun shops in New Hampshire. Four months later, the group followed up, dropping by to see if stores were using the materials. Close to half of the shops were.
"The dealers who chose not to participate, I think, in time will see the value in it," Demicco said, adding that they worked hard to make the project's language "nontoxic" to dealers and gun owners for whom suicide remains a controversial topic.
Some who declined to be involved worry that acknowledging the gun industry has a role to play in suicide prevention could be fodder for lawsuits or gun control groups to ague they're not doing enough, Demicco said.
Demicco said his shop has sent people away "madder than hoot owls" when he wouldn't sell them a weapon, but he doesn't recall any formal allegations of discrimination. He said most denials are because a person lacks basic firearm knowledge, but others were denied because something about them gave him or his employees pause. Demicco said his workers were never under any pressure to make sales, but taking on the project has helped his business make better decisions.

Joe Faris, Project Runway Alum, Designs Artwork For Cabot Guns' American Joe 1911 Pistol (PHOTO)
If you watched "Project Runway" (which, yes, is still on the air) back in in 2008, you might remember Detroiter Joe Faris. The designer was quite different than the youngish, Portland-based Leanne Marshall, whose feminine designs brought her the win . At the time, Faris was in his early 40s, had an established career and dressed in black t-shirts and jeans, playing up his "tough" metro Detroit roots.
Since placing sixth on the fifth season of the fashion reality competition that now airs on Lifetime, he's had his hands in several different projects, like Motor City Denim, a line Faris helped launch before leaving in 2011. He's still making his own designs, is one of the creators of the annual Fashion in Detroit event and endlessly cheerleads for the small but growing fashion industry in the city.
And now he's taken his aesthetic to Cabot Guns. The apparel designer lent his stylings to the gun manufacturer's American Joe 1911 pistol, emblazoned with an American flag:
The gun evokes Detroit, both through Faris' connection and a tire tread design in the USA lettering that calls to mind the city's auto industry. It's a bit of a controversial symbol to choose for a city that marked its highest murder rate in nearly two decades last year.
The signature handgun's release also comes while a debate over gun control dominates the national political conversation following the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Faris didn't approach the project from a political angle:
“I see a gun as a fashionable item, as crazy as that sounds," he told the paper. But he's not oblivious to the fact that it could provoke strong reactions, telling the Free Press he loved "the controversial aspect of it."

TransCanada Pipeline Project To Bring Crude Oil To Eastern Canada Welcomed By Government

TORONTO, April 2 (Reuters) - The Canadian government said on Tuesday it was encouraged by TransCanada Corp's announcement that it plans to move forward on a plan to convert and build pipeline infrastructure to transport crude oil from Western Canada to eastern Canadian markets.
The project could potentially eliminate Canada's reliance on the higher priced crude oil that it currently imports to supply East Coast refineries.
Calgary, Alberta-based TransCanada, on Tuesday said its Energy East Pipeline would have the capacity to transport as much as 850,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
"Our government strongly supports initiatives to construct energy infrastructure to transport western Canadian oil to the east," said Canada's Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver, during a press conference. "It is in the national interest to replace higher-cost foreign crude with lower-cost Canadian crude to consumers and refineries in Quebec and Atlantic Canada."

'Project Runway': Miranda Lambert Gives Harsh Criticism As A Guest Judge The challenge for this week of "Project Runway" was to design a dress for country music star Miranda Lambert. To add to the pressure, Miranda was there herself to help judge the designs and offer her own critiques. And she proved that she had no intention of being one of those gushing celebrities who says everything is great. She didn't hold back at all.
She was particularly disappointed in Matt, who saw himself land in the bottom thanks to his design. He couldn't stop apologizing for it, either, which seemed to bother Miranda more than the design itself.
"You know what? I don’t even want to talk about it, because you obviously know what’s wrong with it," she said. "I just want to talk about you not having confidence in your own craft. Because, if you don’t have confidence in your craft, then no one else can."
She encouraged him to find his confidence, though it wouldn't be on "Project Runway" as Matt was eliminated. Perhaps proving Miranda right, Matt didn't cry. He said he deserved it and knew his time was coming. Buddy TV hopes his elimination doesn't hurt his confidence even more.
The remaining designers keep vying for the prize on "Project Runway," Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on Lifetime.

Todd Akin Criticizes Karl Rove-Backed Conservative Victory Project
Former Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) took a swipe at Karl Rove's latest venture on Wednesday, blasting the Republican strategist's new project as a "disrespectful" and thinly veiled attempt to "get rid of conservatives."
"It may be another example of big-government conservatism, to try to bypass primaries,” Akin said in an interview with The Hill of Rove's Conservative Victory Project, which will oppose fringe candidates in Republican primaries. "If they were successful, it basically helps kill the grassroots heart of the party. I think it’s very non-constructive."
Akin waged an unsuccessful Senate bid against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) last year. Many blamed Akin's defeat on his controversial remark that "legitimate rape" victims rarely become pregnant because "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
The Rove-backed project, an offshoot of the American Crossroads super PAC, will look to prevent future Todd Akins from beating more electable candidates in congressional primaries.
“There is a broad concern about having blown a significant number of races because the wrong candidates were selected,” American Crossroads president Steven J. Law told the New York Times. “We don’t view ourselves as being in the incumbent protection business, but we want to pick the most conservative candidate who can win."
Rove also defended the project last week, telling Fox News that candidates like Akin do not represent the best of what the Republican Party has to offer.
"It's amazing that people think Todd Akin was the best we could've come up with," Rove said. "He wasn't even a Tea Partier."
Akin, whom Law has cited by name as one of the candidates who inspired the new effort, said that he doesn't take the project personally, but believes it will be detrimental to the GOP.
“I think people are going to be wise to that attempt to bypass primary elections," Akin said. "To me, I think that’s tremendously disrespectful to the grassroots Republican primary voters."
