Valerie Harper's Landmark 'Gay' Move: Actress Recalls Being Among First To Use Word On TV

In a new interview, Valerie Harper shares her thoughts about being one of the first stars to utter the word "gay" on TV.

Speaking on an episode of "The Doctors," Harper -- who recently revealed that she has terminal brain cancer -- recalled the time she made TV history by using the word "gay" on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

"The audience went crazy," the 73-year-old actress, who played Rhoda Morgenstern on the iconic series, recalled. "They started laughing and they wouldn't stop ... they had to cut the laugh, because it was too long."

Harper's full interview is set to air March 11.
