Apple Should Create Stolen iPhone 'Kill Switch,' Says Top City Prosecutor

The top prosecutor in San Francisco wants Apple to design a "kill switch" for iPhones that would render devices useless after they are stolen.

San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon said he pressed an Apple representative last week to embed such technology in every iPhone to diminish the product's value on the thriving black market for stolen mobile devices.

Gascon described the meeting as “very underwhelming," and said he now wants to meet with Apple chief executive Tim Cook to discuss development of an iPhone "kill switch."

“Given how nimble our technology companies are and how they can develop so many new features, I strongly believe that is a very doable thing,” Gascon said in an interview with The Huffington Post.

An Apple spokesman did not return a request for comment.

Across the country, police have reported a surge in thefts of smartphones and tablet computers -- iPhones and iPads in particular -- as criminals snatch mobile devices and resell them on the Internet, on street corners and inside local convenience stores. Of the 3,190 robberies in San Francisco last year, nearly half, or 1,470, were smartphone-related, according to police figures provided to HuffPost.

The spike in thefts has forced police departments to create special undercover units aimed at catching phone thieves. The human toll of phone robberies is also rising, as some victims lose not just their phones, but also their lives.

Last April, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile agreed to begin sharing a list of serial numbers linked to stolen phones. Once the policy goes into effect by the end of this year, a phone reported stolen will no longer work on any major U.S. wireless network.

Gascon, however, said the stolen phone database “looks good but is nothing more than smoke and mirrors."

A similar stolen phone blacklist launched in the United Kingdom a decade ago has not stopped phone thefts. Instead, it drove the black market overseas, because foreign wireless carriers don’t participate in the database.

Even if an iPhone is blacklisted, it can still connect to Wi-Fi hotspots to download games and music, browse the Web, make Skype calls and send text messages using WhatsApp, a popular Internet-based texting application.

“I’m very disturbed by the fact that the mobile communication industry, both at the carrier level and the manufacturer level, is so slow to respond to a problem that has been emerging for easily the last four or five years,” Gascon said.

“There are not a lot of times when we can create technological solutions to a problem,” he added. “This is one we can.”

When creating a blog, website or edit any of our social networking profiles, we note that we are allowed to choose the background that will give the same.

With BgMaker we can create a background completely to our liking, choosing between different forms, drawings and even we can choose the color palette of our choice. Create an Un-guessable Passcode for your iOS Devices

You can easily create strong and un-guessable passcodes for your iOS devices – like the iPhone and iPad – using accented characters in the password string.

It is easy to type accented characters (like ä, the letter “a” with two dots placed over it) using the virtual keyboard of your iPhone and iPad. Just tap and hold a key and it will show you a list of related characters that have accent marks.

iOS Passcodes Use accented characters as passcodes on your iPhone and iPad – like strâtégý

The passcode of your iPhone /iPad is generally made up of digits but if you would like to use a more strong and un-guessable passcode, consider using one or more of these accented characters. For instance, a word like Äpplë is much more difficult to guess than just Apple.

If you do not see the option to use alphanumeric characters as the passcode for your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock and turn off Simple Passcode.

Also see: Keyboard Shortcuts for iPhone & iPad

This is an iOS specific feature. Android devices support alphanumeric characters for screen passwords but accented characters aren’t allowed. And in the case of Windows Phone 8, you can only use digits to lock /unlock the screen.

The tip was originally shared by @ade494 on Reddit.

If your goal is to be recognized in the ranks with other influential bloggers one day, here’s something you should know… content isn’t king. Yes, I know that statement may go against everything you’ve heard since entering the blogosphere, but I’m here to tell you that statement is indeed the truth.

While creating quality content does come in as a close second, building relationships with influential bloggers is what’s really going to shoot your blog and business to the next level.

making solid connections with bloggersI’ve been an active part of the blogosphere for the past 3 months now and I’ve been getting down and dirty in the trenches building solid relationships with influential bloggers. And quite frankly, that’s the very reason why I’ve been able to drive 19,828+ visitors and create an engaging community on a blog that’s only 3 months old.

As I’ve gone along in my blog building adventures, I’ve encountered many new bloggers who are struggling with the concept of reaching out and connecting with influential bloggers in their niche. So this article is going to detail step-by-step exactly how to start, build and maintain solid relationships with influential bloggers.

(1) Start by sharing their content on social networks - This first step is ridiculously easy. It really doesn’t take much effort to just point and click the retweet and share buttons on their posts. A lot of new bloggers have a scarcity mentality and are afraid of sharing other people’s content with their following. This is usually because they think that their readers are going to jump ship and unsubscribe from their RSS feed because they favor the influential bloggers content. Or it maybe it’s because they want to keep all the good stuff to themselves. Either way, you can’t afford to be stingy when it comes to quality content.

By sharing influential bloggers content, you’re actually providing your audience with even more value and giving them the benefit of a different perspective. Sharing valuable content with your social networks shows your readers that you  truly care about the quality of information you expose them to and it shows the blogger that you appreciate their work and are not afraid to share the love.

When I first relaunched my blog, sharing influential bloggers content is the first thing I did to begin getting on their radars.

I traveled around the blogosphere tweeting, “liking” and sharing nearly every piece of content they created because I wanted to show them that I valued their work. I also wanted to make sure that my name kept showing up in their mentioned feeds.  The more authority bloggers see your name in their share feeds, the better your chances of them remembering you when you begin directly interacting and engaging with their content.

Which leads us to step two…

(2) Lay on the second layer with blog commenting – The next action you want to begin doing is a lot and I do mean A LOT of direct interaction with the blogger. The easiest way to start doing this is by directly engaging with bloggers and their content in the comments on their posts.  I’ve learned that true conversations and connections in the blogosphere take place in the comments because you’re meeting bloggers on their home base. Commenting allows you to further the relationship and go much deeper than just a simple tweet or share of their content.

When you start blog commenting, you don’t want to leave what I like to call “one liner farts” . You know the ones…”Great post. Thanks for sharing!” I mean, what is that anyway?

You can’t expect authority bloggers to take notice of a comment like that, yet alone engage with you. In fact, many  influential bloggers wont even approve one line comments and in many instances if you post too many of these one liner comments, you’ll get banned from commenting on their posts.

The way to comment and interact on an influential bloggers posts is the same as if you would were interacting with them face to face. To engage the blogger ask questions, share your personal experiences and opinions and most importantly, be authentic and TRANSPARENT in your comments.

Don’t leave fake faulty sounding comments that sound like you’re trying to be a “doctor of blogging” or something. The biggest thing that will attract a  influential bloggers attention is authenticity  When you comment, it’s okay to share your concerns, ask for advice or be vulnerable. These are the type of comments that engage the blogger and provoke them to react and interact with you. You don’t have to be an expert blogger to attract an authority bloggers attention.

There’s an art to blog commenting and when done correctly can open up a windfall of opportunities.

When I began doing this blog commenting interaction with  influential bloggers, I’ve always received favorable responses from them. I’ve even landed an unsolicited guest post on an extremely popular blog through commenting on the bloggers posts. This is proof of the extreme effectiveness of blog commenting and what it can do for furthering relationships with authority bloggers.

(3) Further command  attention by sending them free traffic - The next step that you can take to connect with an influential blogger and get on their good side is to send them a TON of free traffic. You want to be doing this as much as possible. Some of the easiest ways to do this to by sharing their content on social bookmarking sites like BizSugar.com and curating their content on sites like Scoop.it. You can even begin your own content curation on your blog by starting a weekly link roundup and including the influential blogger in your roundups.

Sending free traffic is ridiculously effective for catching the attention of influential bloggers and provoking recognition,  interaction and engagement from them. If you choose to send them traffic through weekly link roundups, many of them may drop by and comment on your roundup thanking you for the mention. Some will even share and retweet your post to their social network, which is killer for getting traffic back to your post and your blog.

You can  also find influential bloggers that have their own link roundups and submit your content to be published in theirs.

You don’t want to just slap any old blog post together, dub it quality content and think it’s going to get published in their roundup. Most authority bloggers only publish insanely valuable content in their link roundups, so make sure that you’re submitting only your very best work to them. If they see your work and think that your content is valuable, you’ll definitely get on their radar and this will add another layer to your relationship with them.

(4) Make them a feature in a Top 7 / Top 10 post - Another simple and extremely effective step you can take to further connect with influential bloggers is by doing Top 7 or Top 10 posts featuring the blogger with links pointing back to their website. When you’re doing a “top bloggers” post, you want to make sure that you’re thorough, being as specific as possible in the post and link to one (or more) of their posts explaining why you liked it and what you’ve learned from them.

This kind of post can be complied by simply pulling the best tips that you’ve learned from authority bloggers about a particular subject (i.e. content marketing, content creation, traffic generation, ect.) and including excerpts of the specific post that you learned the tips from.  Write a paragraph or so about how you’ve used and implemented the specific tip they shared and the results you’ve produced with it. This is good for showing the blogger that you’re actually digesting and implementing the content they share. They will also be more inclined to interact and engage with your post and share it with their social networks because they see that you were authentic in your writing.

Note: Make sure that you give the blogger credit by directly linking back to the particular post that you took the excerpt from. Also,  be sure to include their Twitter handle within the post as well to aid increasing their social exposure.  Be sure that once you’ve published the post you notify the blogger via email, social media or any other outlet you can find them on.

A Top 7 post was one the very first posts that I did on my blog to get on Ms. Ileane’s radar. I did a Top 7 post where I shared the best traffic driving tips I’ve learned from 7 of the top bloggers online. I followed this exact format and once I published it, I contacted Ileane through Scoop.it to let her know about the post. She appreciated my featuring her and even commented on my article. Now here I am writing this guest post for her blog. :)

(5) Lay it on thick by speaking directly to them through video - Making a live video of yourself specifically for an influential blogger is by far one of the most effective steps to deepen the relationship. A live video simply can’t be ignored! You can even use this strategy as your initial contact method and send the video to them via email – which will give you a leaping head start in the relationship building process.

The most effective video would be one of  you speaking directly to the camera (as if you were speaking directly to them in person – addressing them by name) and sharing with them why you enjoy reading their content. Don’t be afraid to show yourself to them and be real in your video.

You should share some specific posts that you particularly liked of theirs and share specific examples of how they’ve helped you with your blog. When interacting with influential bloggers in an effort to build a relationship, you always want to be as specific as possible.

They have hundreds of people vying for their attention on a daily basis, however, using video and being specific in the ways that they’ve helped you is a great way to stand out from the crowd and lets them know that you’re truly reading and enjoy their content. Plus, this solidifies to them that the content they’re putting out is really helping their audience.

I actually did this a while ago and this was how I initially connected with Lisa Irby of 2 Create A Website. At the time, I didn’t really realize what I was doing and the effectiveness that it would have of getting and keeping me on her radar to recall who I was. However, the video was extremely effective because a little over a year later when I relaunched my blog, that initial connection I made with her through that YouTube video ultimately aided me in getting a guest post spot on her blog.

Connecting with influential bloggers through video is extremely simple and it doesn’t take that much time or effort. And don’t worry, the video you create doesn’t have to be long at all, 2 or 3 minutes will suffice. If you’re camera shy, then this method wouldn’t work for you. However, I encourage you to challenge yourself in 2013 and do something that scares you. The very thing that scares you is most likely the biggest thing that will catapult your blog and business to the next level.

Ms. Ileane cemented her relationship with Lisa Irby by using this same strategy (remember YouTube is another social network). Even though she was having a “bad hair day” check out How To To Video Response on YouTube – Lisa Irby’s Video Challenge

(6) Deeper and further maintain the relationship through email – This is the last and most important step in the 6 step process. Although social media is great for initially connecting with influential bloggers, on going email is still one the best ways to encourage deeper communication, sustain the relationship, and deepen the connection. Seeking to provoke deeper interaction through email is priceless and in many cases can result in you receiving some free valuable information through the email dialogue that their general audience doesn’t get. Kind of like free coaching.

When you’re able to get an open dialogue going with an influential blogger, it’s important to continue being real, authentic and humble in your interaction. Let them know how much you appreciate all that they do and have done for you. You can even seek to get exclusive advice on specific aspects of your business because you’ve now developed a solid relationship with them. Having this kind of direct access to an influential blogger is truly invaluable and is the key to having a solid long-term blogging career.

At the time of this post, I’m currently engaging in dialogues with a couple of influential bloggers I’ve connected with since the relaunch of my blog. I’ve gained so much insight through our email conversations that I never would have had access to if I’d stopped at only reaching out through social media. I’m even in the process of exploring some joint venture projects in this new year that I extremely excited about!

As you can see, if you want to develop high level relationships with influential bloggers it’s going to require more than just random retweets, FB shares and one liner comments. It requires a high level of consistent high-quality interaction, unwavering persistence  and a deep commitment to creating and sharing quality content to really show an influential blogger that you deserve their time and attention.

You might be thinking that this is a lot of hard work, but it’s really worth the effort in the end. If you follow these 6 steps exactly and you put as much time into building strong relationships with influential bloggers as you do on creating content, you’ll have a virtually indestructible business for years to come.

I’d love to hear your input. Do you feel this would be an effective relationship building process for your blog? What would you do differently? What steps are you currently taking to build relationships? Let me know in the comments below how you plan to connect with influential bloggers!

How to Create Christmas Games

7 authors | 8 revisions | Last updated: December 17, 2012

Mimi, Maluniu, RMunsonNJ, Tryme2, Emma, Flickety, ZareenPin ItArticle EditDiscussCreate Christmas Games

Jolly up your Christmas this year with some Christmas-related games that are fun, inclusive and likely to get even the most crotchety relatives giggling––at least a little! The games can involve prizes if you want but given it's already a season filled with gifts, you might just like to play them for fun and to break the ice.

Edit Steps

Hershey's Kisses Game1Divide everyone into two (or more) groups.2Provide each team with a set of oversized mittens or gloves. Have the members of each team stand in a single file line, with the first person in line wearing the gloves/mittens.3Place a bowl of Hershey's Kisses on a table. If you're the first person in line, run to the bowl.4Unwrap the kiss and put it in your mouth (while wearing the gloves). You may only use your hands—–no teeth—–to unwrap the kiss.5Run back to your line. You may go as soon as you have the kiss in your mouth. Tag the first person in line. Then, take off the gloves/mittens and give them to the person you tagged.6Repeat the process until one group wins. A group wins when everyone in the group has eaten a chocolate kiss!

Gift Wrapping Race1Choose a judge. You will be judged based on your speed of wrapping and the quality of the wrapping job.2Get into teams of two. You and your partner should each choose a hand. The other one will be held behind your back.3Work together to tape the box shut and wrap it. Then, tie a ribbon around it. The first team to finish with a high-quality wrapping job wins.

Santa's Beard Game1Make at least two teams. Each person should evenly smear their chin area with Vaseline. Be sure that each person has about the same amount of Vaseline, to ensure that it's fair.2Put one bowl of cotton balls per team on one side of the room. Then, line up with the rest of your team on the other side.3If you're the first person in line, run to the bowl of cotton balls. Dunk your face in so that as much cotton as possible sticks to the Vaseline.4Run back to your line. Tag the first person so that they can repeat the process.5Tally up the points. Give three points to the team who finished the fastest, and then an additional point for each cotton ball. The team with the most points wins!

Marshmallow Race1Divide into teams. Each team should get mittens, a bag of marshmallows, and a spoon.2If you are the first person in line, put on the mittens. Then, grab a marshmallow from the bag and balance it on the spoon.3Race members of other teams to a bucket across the room. Place the marshmallow into the bucket and return to your team.4Tag the first person in line and give them the spoon and mittens. Repeat the process. The first team to finish wins.

Christmas Carols X-Factor1Pick teams. Assign each team a popular Christmas carol.2Rewrite the carol. You can keep the tune and change the words, or completely change the tune if you want. Feel free to make it as silly as possible.3Choose judges. Have each team perform their revised version––the judges will choose a winner!

Headbandz1Get as many sticky notes as you have people. Stick one on each person's head.2Write Christmas-related names or draw Christmas-related objects on each one. Then, walk and write/draw random objects on them.3Write out questions according to the objects. These can be Yes or No or random answer questions.4Sit everyone down and play (putting the sticky notes on your head of course). Each player must ask questions about their unknown image or words but only receive yes or no answers.5The winner is the first person to guess correctly. However, you can keep going until the last person has guessed, for more fun!

Rockin Around The Christmas Tree (RATCT)

This game is like hide and seek.

1Turn out the lights. Turn on the Christmas tree lights.2Choose a hunter (seeker). Then, spread chairs around the room––these will serve as hiding places and diversions. If the room is big, you can also give a flashlight to the hunter.3Hide. Wait for the hunter to come find you.

Edit TipsFor RATCT, the room must be spacious and the tree is best of being a small size.

Edit WarningsKeep clear of objects that could be broken or toppled when playing fast action games. Avoid using the area near the Christmas tree.

How to Create Websites Optimized for Mobile

Mobile Internet is on the rise all over the world. Many commentators have predicted that mobile search will overtake desktop by 2015 and in some countries, including China and India, this is already the case.

If you're not tapping into this market on the move you're missing out. And the "expectation gap" for mobile performance is also growing quickly, with mobile users expecting faster load times and sites optimized for handheld devices. A survey by mobile and web performance management firm Keynote Systems Inc. found that 64 percent of smartphone users in the U.S. wanted a site to load within four seconds, with 16 percent of respondents saying they would not return or wait for a site to load if it takes too long. After loading times, non-optimized sites were the second biggest gripe.

Clearly it's not always enough to have a single website that can be accessed from mobile and desktop browsers alike. Mobile users expect a different experience from the one they'll get on your standard website. There are some relatively simple steps to help ensure they get what they want.

Simplify Your Design

The small screen size of mobile browsers demands a different approach to desktop website design. Clear, simple designs work best, preferably in a single column, as most users don't want to be scrolling sideways across a page as well as up and down. Pages should not be cluttered or crammed with too much information. The use of white space can help achieve a clean, unfussy look and make your mobile-optimized site clearer and more navigable.

Optimize Your Content

Before adapting your content you should consider what visitors actually want from your site. Most people do not casually surf the web on mobile devices the way they do on desktop. Instead, they tend to visit sites with a particular aim in mind. This may be to check the prices of your products, to find directions to your store, or to find a specific piece of information depending on the nature of your business and site.

Almost invariably, they don't want to read a lengthy mission statement, detailed staff biographies, or learn that you're a great equal opportunities employer. By all means include links to the full version of your website where you can cram in as much information as you like. When thinking of mobile usage, however, think primarily of functionality.

Make Navigation Easier

Users do not want to be clicking through numerous pages and it's usually best to put the most important information and functions on the opening page where possible.

When other pages do have to be accessed you should make the process of navigation as simple as possible. Don't forget that the small screen size of mobile browsers is not ideally suited for clicking on small items. Many mobile devices use a finger as the primary input device and this can be considerably less accurate than a mouse cursor when it comes to clicking the correct button or link. Clearly marked, reasonably large buttons are generally far better than tiny hotspots, clickable images, or embedded text links.

Similarly, it can be useful if you minimize the amount of text a visitor has to enter in order to achieve her goal. Using dropdown menus, checklists, and pre-populated fields as a means of data entry can all help minimize the amount of typing a visitor has to do on a small handheld keyboard and streamline the visit.

Minimize Load Times

If you've already simplified your design, that will also reduce load times. But there are a number of additional things to bear in mind. Flash might be great for regular websites, but too much animation can have a major effect on load times. Not to mention the fact that Apple products do not support Flash at all - a big deal considering the iPhone is 30 percent of the smartphone market. Java can also be a huge drag on load times. It's often better to simply do away with animations and automatically-starting video and audio effects altogether.

Large, high-resolution images can also affect load times. Consider whether all your images are necessary. Do they add anything essential or are they just decorative? Ensure any images you do use are sized and optimized for the mobile format.

Make Your Brand Recognizable

Your mobile-optimized site is likely to be considerably different to your regular site, but a customer who visits both should still feel they stem from the same source. Logos, tone of content, and other branding elements should carry over from one site to the other. This will help to make a strong impression on new visitors and add a sense of familiarity to repeat customers - the single most important asset a business can have.

How to Create an Aluminum Foil Funnel

5 authors | 9 revisions | Last updated: December 12, 2012

Quinn Ronzoni, WebDesigner, Sarshan, Flickety, ZareenPin ItArticle EditDiscuss

When trying to transfer liquids or oils from one container to another, pouring and mixing can get messy. If spouts are different sizes and you want to avoid dripping the liquid all over the counter (and yourself) consider using an easy-to-create funnel fashioned from aluminum foil.

Edit Steps1Create a model funnel using paper or soft cardboard that you can use as a mold. A file, flimsy, folder or piece of card will all be suitable.

2Wrap the paper in a funnel shape. Check to see if it fits in the container(s) you intend to use.

3Tape the model funnel together to hold it firmly. You now have a funnel model ready for wrapping the aluminum foil around.

4Tear off a sheet of aluminum foil, slightly longer than the funnel model. You want a slightly longer sheet in case you need to adjust the size.

Use only new foil for making the foil funnel. While you may want to repurpose the foil used to wrap last night’s meal, it will be weaker and may rip or tear.

5Wrap the foil around the model. Lightly tape one end of the foil to the funnel model. Wrap the foil around the model to create the foil funnel.

6Tape the other end of the foil together to complete the funnel. You may want to line the entire edge with tape to ensure it fully adheres.

7Remove the tape from the inside of the aluminum foil funnel to release it from the cardboard model. You will be left with a perfectly formed aluminum foil funnel.

8Use funnel immediately. This funnel can be easily crushed or changed so it’s best to put it to use right away.

Place a paper towel underneath the receptacle to avoid dripping (in case the funnel fails or liquid drips). Also place a paper towel underneath the funnel after removing it from the bottle.

Push the funnel deeply into the bottle when transferring liquid to reduce the possibility of spillage.

Edit TipsIn some cases you can recycle your aluminum foil funnel by gently washing it with warm water and mild dish soap.Check for holes or rips in the foil before using (a hole or tear will defeat the purpose of having the funnel).

Edit WarningsWhen using an aluminum foil funnel to transport poisonous or hazardous liquid properly dispose immediately (and properly) after use.
