6 Keyword Research Mistakes You Might be Making

A GUIDE TO MAKING THEM COUNT -

“Keyword research is an all too often under-appreciated aspect of SEO.
I’ve written a few keyword research posts here on SEOmoz and that’s because I believe it to be the blueprint of any successful SEO campaign.

Here are some of the more common mistakes that I see people make with their keyword research.

#1 – You’re being Unrealistic

“It is better to have a bigger slice of a few smaller pies rather than not getting even a slither of a much bigger pie.”

Keyword research appears to be a very straightforward task. You fire up your keyword research tool of choice and find the keywords that relate to your industry with the highest search volumes. Sadly, that’s not the way to do it if you want to see real results.

To many businesses, high-competition keywords are simply out of reach – at least in the short and medium term. Part of good keyword research is about being realistic and selecting appropriate keywords for targeting that take into account the site’s age, current authority and any future optimization that will take place.

Targeting one word keywords is quite often unrealistic but it may also prove unprofitable – someone searching for ‘Toshiba l670 laptop’ is likely to be much further along in the purchasing process that someone who searches for ‘laptops’ – think about which searcher is likely to have their credit card out already.

There’s nothing wrong with targeting generic keywords, I’m simply saying that if your campaign has limited budget and you need results in the short to medium term then targeting less trafficked, less competitive keywords is a much better way to utilize resources.

Lower traffic but lower competition keywords might not seem as exciting to target but if your website can dominate these areas fairly quickly then you are going to see far more traffic from the search engines than failing to effectively target a much more competitive term.

#2 – You’re looking at broad match instead of exact match

A seemingly simple mistake but one which many people continue to make…
Search volume is of course a very important metric when it comes to keyword research but all too often people make the mistake of looking at broad search volumes rather than the exact match figure when using tools like Google’s Keyword Tool.

There can be a huge difference between broad match and exact match search traffic for example:

There are 135,000 broad match searches each month in the UK for ‘dog kennels’ but only 14,800 exact match searches for the same keyword. Still, this wouldn’t prove particularly problematic as this is obviously still a keyword worth targeting – it would knock traffic and ROI projections way off kilter if you do these kinds of things though.

The real problem comes when you choose to target a keyword like ‘ladies leather handbags’ which has a broad match search volume of 2,400 but an exact match search volume of only 260 – failing to base your research on exact match data might mean you think you are targeting a reasonably well-trafficked keyword when in actual fact, once you’ve factored in data inaccuracies, you could be looking at a very low search volume keyword indeed.

It is widely accepted that Google’s Keyword Tool isn’t entirely accurate when it comes to search volumes but using exact match gives you the best data available when assessing how viable a keyword is to target.

#3 – You’re targeting plural instead of singular

It is very common to see a website targeting the plural version of a keyword but in most cases, it is the singular version of a keyword that people are searching for.

I see this most often on eCommerce websites where the site owner optimizes category pages and because they sell more than one product, they naturally focus on the pluralized keywords for example “tablet PCs” which actually gets 91% less searches than “tablet PC”.

I will readily admit that Google is much better at determining that a singular and plural version of a keyword are one and the same, but in many cases there are still differences in the search results. Failing to target the singular keyword can be the difference between your search listing being highlighted in the SERPs (=higher click through) and it can also mean your website appears lower (even slightly) than marginally better targeted pages – that could be the difference between making a sale and not.

#4 – You’re ignoring conversion

This one could easily turn into a rant for me because so often I come up against clients who want to rank for [insert trophy keyword] when in actual fact they’d do better (financially) targeting a different keyword or set of keywords. I try to explain that a keyword that brings in traffic is wasted bandwidth if that traffic doesn’t convert. You don’t hire my company to get traffic for traffic’s sake…you presumably hire us to help you ultimately make more sales.

The online world is competitive and it’s only going to get more competitive, therefore making the most of every penny being invested is vital.

This makes conversion and language analysis a vital part of keyword research. The human mind is the only software capable of performing a good quality ‘conversion audit’ of a keyword list because whilst there are programs out there that can filter and sort keywords to make your life easier, there’s no real substitute for industry experience and SEO knowledge.

There are some very basic indicators for example prefixes such as ‘buy’ might be a clear indicator that the traffic from this keyword is going to convert.

A keyword conversion audit is more complex than that however since each situation and market is individual. I find existing data to be a very useful way to determine which keywords are likely to convert well. If you have goal tracking setup with Google Analytics, you can easily determine the highest converting keywords your site currently gets traffic from, try to identify patterns in your highest converting keywords and then translate and apply this knowledge to other areas of keyword research.

#5 – You’re selecting keywords that are out of context

This is yet more rationale to further humanise the keyword research process because most keyword tools struggle to compute words and their meaning in the way a human would.

For example, a searcher looking for ‘storage’ could be looking for a self-storage centre, boxes and other storage furniture for the home or even professional storage solutions for a warehouse or office.

Opportunities for confused targeting are abundant which is why it is essential the keywords you decide to target are highly-relevant and laser-focused towards what your business offers.

A good way to do this is to search manually for the keywords in Google and see the kinds of results that come up, you will likely be able to get a feel for whether the keyword is applicable to the product or service you intended to target.

#6 – You’re failing to conduct keyword reviews

It is accepted that SEO is an on-going process but rarely are target keywords reviewed and audited. If a marketplace is shifting over time then you would also expect customer search behaviour to develop and evolve over time too – this makes regular keyword reviews essential.

In most markets, I find an annual review is perfectly adequate. Any time period shorter than this and there is a risk that targeting becomes a bit chaotic with efforts focused on new keywords before results on old keywords have been achieved or evaluated.

That being said, in some competitive and very fast moving markets a more regular keyword review may be required.

The aim of a keyword review is to:

* Weed out poor performing keywords
* Identify opportunities and areas for growth
* Shape your SEO strategy for the future

To do a strategic and actionable keyword review you can use this adapted version of the Boston Matrix that I like to use.

Large brands use the Boston Matrix to assess the health of their product portfolio and to identify where to concentrate their resources.

You can do the same thing for your keyword portfolio.

Sort your keywords into four categories in order to better shape your search strategy for the future.

Question marks – these are keywords in areas where growth is likely but at present you’re not getting the performance you’d expect. These are very often untapped keyword opportunities and you should plan how you are going to improve performance on these kinds of keywords.

Stars – high-performance keywords and loads of room for growth – find ways to capitalise on growth. My advice is to focus your resources of gaining results in these areas for maximum ROI in a short period of time.

Dogs – the poor performing keywords with little or no chance of growth – bin these in favour of other keywords, reallocate any resources to other areas.

Cash cows – the high performing keywords that show little opportunity for growth – look for ways to enhance and maintain performance whilst identifying patterns and translating this learning to other areas or verticals.

What mistakes do you see happening in the keyword research process? Please share them in the comments section below…”

Help - PHP MySQL Multiple Decision Making System?

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum (Long time reader, first time poster!)

I'm working on a system that sends sales leads to the correct person based on a number of conditions.

At present, a sales lead will come into a MySQL table called "Leads" with all of the customers information and the column name of Status is set to "New".

Sales reps then have access to a very basic report that allows them to view the leads based on the Status (e.g. New to view all the leads that are new and haven't been allocated).

What I want to happen:

Lead comes into the MySQL table as "New" as it does currently now.

The system will automatically make a decision where to place the lead based on what information the customer submitted (e.g. The product the customer is interested in/the loan amount the customer has applied for (if the product is set to loan), if its a weekday or weekend etc etc). Basically wanting something that can be changed easily without having to heavily edit the PHP code.

Do you know of something that's opensource that I could use to do this or a tutorial on where to start? Or even what i'd need to start with?

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Cheers guys!

Payday Loan Site Making $150+ a month

Can you give me guest access to google analytics? I'd like more information as to where your traffic is coming from. It says many of your visitors are from referrals are those backlinks? Also I see you have a twitter account for the site, would that be included in the deal?
PM sent about analytics access.

Yes the twitter account is included, also the .co.uk of the domain is as well, which I forgot to mention in the post.

Some of the referral traffic is from backlinks, I made some posts on sites like money.co.uk months ago as well, which still seem to generate some traffic still.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks

Um wtf. Why did I get a warning for making a valuable post?

So earlier today I made a post about the extreme tracking tool which is a free tool that webmasters can use to see where their traffic is coming from not only based by referral and google keyword searches, but geographically. I probably spent a good 20 minutes writing up the post because I thought it would be useful. I only recently learned you needed a certain number of likes to start threads in the marketplace so I am trying to make valuable posts people might like.

For my efforts, I got my post deleted AND I GOT A WARNING for "running up post count / post has no value". WTF? IT HAS NO VALUE?

This is VERY unfair. Why should 20 minutes of my time be completely wasted for no reason? Why is a post I thought that was valuable to others simply being brushed off as "having no value"? Can someone please reverse this. How the hell am I supposed to use this forum to make money if the staff delete everything I do? I've been a member here for YEARS. This is complete bull.

While Sheryl Sandberg is working hard to promote Lean In, her book about what's holding women back in the workforce, many hard-working women are having a hard time "leaning in" on Facebook.

That's because Facebook, which Ms. Sandberg helps run, is very helpful to big businesses with giant advertising budgets, but not to small businesses, which are what 90 percent of women business owners run.

That was the hard lesson Jennifer Flanders learned when the new Facebook page she created for her business -- Jennifer Flanders Design -- was hijacked several weeks ago by a Tunisian hackers.

On March 10, Flanders, an accomplished interior designer with a starring role in an upcoming HGTV show, The Real Designing Women, discovered her page had been hacked by someone calling themselves "darksoul12." Not only that, but the hacker removed her as the Page administrator and replaced her professional cover photo with the banner: "Tunisia-Hacker: We are the Best Hackers."

2013-03-24-ScreenShot20130324at10.24.37AM.png

If your personal Facebook account has been hacked there are steps you can take. But, astoundingly, these steps do not exist for your business page.

There is no specific avenue for recovering a hacked Facebook page if you do not have a a large advertising account and therefore your own Facebook sales rep. In spite of filing over 10 "Report a problem with this page" forms (I flagged it and reached out to Facebook too), Flanders has not received any response from Facebook -- no matter how hard she's tried to "lean in" -- because Facebook is seemingly unresponsive to small business owners who are just starting to use Facebook for marketing.

Facebook Help's only advice for page owners who have been removed as administrators from their own Pages is to message the hackers and ask them to make you an administrator again!

The good news is that Flanders' Facebook Page was "returned" to her this weekend, two weeks after she lost access. The bad news is that there is no indication -- no notification, no email -- that Facebook was responsible -- and responsive -- for the return. More likely it was the hacker, who seemed more mischievous than malicious, who simply returned it to her and moved on (thanks, darksoul12!)

Women now own about 30 percent of America's businesses and the overwhelming majority of them run small businesses. If Sheryl Sandberg's own company -- Facebook -- only offers customer service to giant companies, then they are de facto providing women business owners with less customer service. And if Facebook does not provide customer service to smaller companies that are trying to use Facebook to market, they are de facto making it harder for women business owners to lean in.

Sheryl Sandberg's advice -- Lean In -- is a positive and valuable one. It's ironic, however, that the company she helps run makes it hard for women business owners to do just that.

Making A Torrent Site. Anyone Willing To Help?

Ok, first you have four posts. Second, you want to create a torrent site with no knowledge about anything, except what you've only read from Torrent Freak. This screams NO.

You will hit a disaster very soon after trying to release a new site like this with no knowledge. Hypercube is dead and Gottfried in prison, OpenTracker old, Gazelle is What.cd's old code and useless, TBDev is dead and will never come back and very outdated against PHP, blah blah.

You have to be willing an able to code daily, spend a shit ton of money daily, and then in the end understand it all, and why you are doing it for legal reasons with a back of lawyers who support this.

Not to mention private servers as far away from the law as possible, and nothing operating under .com, .net, etc., anything USA owned by VeriSign.

Think.
My background on this: Not telling.

Buying Money Making Products? | Is it ever Worth it?

Like many others have said, I too prefer to use software in order to increase my productivity.

However, most of the time you could find most of the information in make money online books free on the internet if you searched around, but to me time is much more valuable than money.

I've found that most people think just having the information in their head is enough. you have to actually follow through and complete the tasks laid out for you. only then will you be able to decide if the method works or not. It would be like having a recipe on how to bake cake: read it, know it by heart, but do nothing it says, and afterwards complaining that the recipe didn't teach you how to make a cake.

and like jacksarlo said one of the most important things is to be focused on one thing, there are way too many ways to make money online, and it gets tempting to try other things before you finish one method of making money.

My advice would be to focus on learning the principles of making money, you can learn methods but methods can go out of date, principles never do

and like coloma said, it's possible to make $3000/mo from a $10 product. I made $497 in week using a method from a $9 product

Even if you give the people the secrets to becoming rich for $7 it takes a rare kind of person to actually have the focus to apply everything taught to them, and preserve until money is made.

Making Money Of Fiverr Method

Hello.
Today I want to tell you how you can get some money with Fiverr without doing cheap services.

Its called Graphic Design and Video Outsourcing.
Its not new and I found it straight on the other marketplace forum but anyway I want to recommend it for you.

In the Fiverr you can find a lot of people who're creating logos, banners, graphic design, psd in the Graphic section. Find the best ones. They're doing amazing things only for 5$.

How you can earn from them?
This is an ad that I inserted!
Create simple website and offer these services like your own!
Instead of 5$, you can offer to do it for 20$ - 30 $ - 50 $. Sounds good? Sure.

The most hardest thing is to find some buyers. But you can look straight to small niche and use some advertisement. Its working, its old method and it still working and working better than you think. From this kind of "money making" I earned 400$ in about 2 months. I think thats great.

Whats the best thing of your success?
You need to do it RIGHT NOW. Do not wait, do not read, do not be scary. You need to take action.

5 Reasons Keeping Secrets Is Making You More Stressed

We're all guilty of it sometimes: You keep secrets from your friends, family, boyfriend or girlfriend and teachers when you know, deep down, that you should be open and honest. Although your favorite movies and TV shows may glamorize the mystery of keeping secrets (and the dramatic reveal), keeping important experiences or feelings to yourself may have a serious negative impact on your life and relationships.

Here are five reasons you should be spending more time talking things through with the people you trust -- instead of holding it all in.

1. Secrets have been shown to lead to depression.

Researchers in the Netherlands recently found that young people aged 14-19 who kept private secrets had higher levels of rule-breaking behaviors and reported lower moods and more complaints of headaches. The study also found that secrecy was correlated with feelings of loneliness. To avoid the isolating and stressful burden of carrying a private secret on your shoulders, tell a trusted friend or adult.

2. It's true: Secrets don't make friends.

There's a lot of truth to the childhood maxim, "Secrets don't make friends." The Netherlands study also determined that teens who reported keeping more secrets also confessed to having lower-quality relationships that young people who kept fewer or less significant secrets. While there's no need to air your dirty laundry to all your friends in the interest of avoiding secrets, keeping important things from people who trust you can harm (and even ultimately ruin) your friendships.

3. Keeping a secret private can be stressful.

Some things aren't easy to keep to yourself, and you may have to watch your back to make sure parents or friends don't find about about your secret -- whether it's an under-the-radar relationship or the fact that you're failing Spanish. Small secrets can easily snowball into big secrets. The stress of lying to your friends and family can be a major source of anxiety, and it's one that you can easily avoid by coming clean right away.

5. Secrets lead to lies.

A big secret can easily turn into a web of lies. After all, it's not easy to keep something important from the people you care about without telling a few little white lies (and maybe some big ones) to cover your tail along the way. Without getting into all the reasons that lying is something you just shouldn't do, suffice it to say that honesty really is the best policy.

5. People are more trustworthy and understanding than you might think.

If someone has proved themselves to be worthy of your trust, then that person is worth confiding in. You might be surprised at what a relief it is to open up about the things you've been keeping to yourself.

[WTB] Sites making $5-10 a month revenue, prefer by adsense but open to all.

Site must have solid traffic, if the site does not make $5-10/ month but has over 1,000UV a day I am interested in this as well.

Prefer automated sites or semi-automated which do not require my full attention. Must be adsense safe, and legal. My budget reflects what type of site it is, the traffic, pr, and the domain name itself. I will pay an honest price.

What Is Stopping You From Making Money Online?

I'd like to share my thought with everyone as a gift for 2013. I just want to remind you what MINDSET you should AVOID in order to make your online business work starting day one.

Many people want to make money online, but unfortunately, take very little action. They dream about how better off they would be if they had their boss's salary.

Yet, the real truth is, that you can, in fact, be better positioned to make more money than your boss - at least significantly more than you realize.

Let's take for example, the average high level manager which may be your boss. He or she earns about $200,000 a year, with benefits. He or she may also stand to lose that income in the event of layoffs or illness in one shot. Although his or her income earning potential is high, it only comes from one source - this is a vulnerability.

Now, compare that with a middle level manager earning $50,000 a year. This middle manager, however, rents out properties in the city for another $100,000 and reaps dividends from stocks and bonds for another $20,000 a year. In the event of illness, death or mass layoffs, half of his earning potential is still secure.

The source of the latter's income is also easily passed on to future generations, securing wealth for the middle level manager's family. In addition, he may have other sources of income as well.

Do not wait for business opportunities to arrive at your doorstep, you need to go out and create them. Entrepreneurs look at an empty lot and see possibility and a method for them to make more money. Those with a poor mindset simply see an empty lot. It is always about keeping the right perspective and having an "eye" for generating value. The rich look at garbage and see a garbage hauling business, a rust-cleaning service, a recycling center. Those with a poor mindset see only the discarded tires, the dirt
and the weeds.

Another great secret is to never care where you money comes from. Many people balk at investing in businesses that are not "sexy" perhaps because they do not want to tell people at parties that they got rich off sewage.

The bottom line here is that wealthy people continue to look at ways to increase their wealth by generating value. Many of them have utilized technology to increase and compound their ability to generate value. The internet is a great example of this. If you have any type of online internet business, you can make money while you are sleeping or when you are at your salaried 9-5 position.

Among the countless products to sell online, you may be able to make with informational products. Informational products like e-books, for example, are great because you can resell them over
and over again and keep all the profits.

There is a lot to learn, but it's not rocket science. Nobody is born making many online, they all have to start somewhere.

No matter what business you are in, are you taking the necessary actions to make profits?

Cheers and happy new year,
Kevin

The Right Way Of Making Money Online

I know how you feel. Trust me, I've been there. I've tried many different things, but none of them seemed to be as easy / profitable as they seem at first. After realizing that, I'd feel disappointed and think there's something wrong with the method or my execution of it.

Most people will quit the method at this point and start reading forums, buying products to find something else to do. You don't even have to feel disappointed. You may be doing this one method but then you see a post about something else that sounds even better than what you're doing right now. After a while of doing this new method, it's not as interesting and new as it was and you will find a new one that sounds even more interesting and do it instead.

Damn me if this isn't because of the way we live these days. Everywhere we look we're bombarded with advertisment of shiny new things that tell us we MUST have it. It becomes second nature to constantly get and use new things. Now I may be over generalizing things, but you get the point.
It gets even worse in IM since everything here is literally at your fingertips.

This + human nature = the fact that most people enter this IM world with the wrong attitude. And this wrong attitude is really dangerous. If you don't break out of it, you will most likely stay on the wrong end of the foodchain. A vicous circle of constantly spending money and wasting time, thinking that this new method is surely your way to riches.

However, it's not all so dark. The first step of solving your problem is realising you have a problem.

Wrong Attitude Trying to find the easy way outBeing lazyNot having enough patienceThinking about money all the timeSpending too much moneyBeing spoonfed and copying methodsJumping from one thing to anotherDo you recognize yourself in any of that? If you do then by the end of this post you will hopefully realize that you have a problem and start fixing it.

Loads of people think that IM is a way out of their boring 9-5 job or a way to be financially free. While this can definitely be the case, it's not an easy way by any means. Without hard work you will achieve nothing except more and more frustration. And to be able to do this hard work, you need the right attitude.

The Right Attitude Be persistantDon't be lazyFocus on solving problems and helping peopleMake your own methodsIt's sooo simple, this is all you need! Sure a great idea once in a while doesn't hurt, but these 4 points are the core.
Keeping those 4 points in mind, find something that you're passionate about and build a method around it.

The Right Method

Do you like sports? You could start an authority site on anything sports related. It can be about sport news, football / basketball tricks, betting tips, scores and statistics, anything.
Maybe you like cooking? Well you could share your recipes or do "How To" videos.
Do you like graffics / drawing? Record tutorial videos on photoshop / drawing. As with everything, start a blog!
Maybe you like gaming? Make your own youtube channel where you stream, do walkthroughs for different games or cast multiplayer games. Also you guessed it...make a blog.
You just like being in front of a camera and talk a lot? Start vloging about your day to day happenings.
You spend a lot of time on twitter / facebook? Start some kind of group / authorithy account.

99% of things you like can be monetized these days. And you're trying out random methods anyway, so why not do something you're familiar with?

Now that you figured out what you want to be doing, build a method from it. Write it on paper! Try to incorporate best parts of all the other methods that you've tried / read about. Compile a list of all the possible traffic sources and monetization methods and see which of them fit your method. Write it all down however you see fit. Having your plans written in front of you will make your idea seem more real in your head. Even if you don't have ANY experience you can create a solid method. Write the base yourself (what excactly you're doing) and then read other tutorials and take the best parts to fill in the details of your own.

Working around something that you like will help you a lot. It is A LOT EASIER to stick to a method that involves those things. Down the road, you will be able to say that you earn for a living by doing what you love. Most people can't say that.

Try To Help People a.k.a. Don't Focus On Making Money

You might be thinking: "But I'm doing this to make money, how can I NOT focus on that?"
While it might not make sense at first, this is actually quite simple.

It's all about building trust.

By focusing on helping people rather than helping yourself, your content will be more genuine and you will establish trust with your audience. People will want to share it with their friends and talk about it. Then you talk with them. Replay to their comments, answer their questions and keep the conversation going. Try out different products in your niche and weed out the bad ones. Then and only then you RECOMMEND them a product you liked rather than blatantly pushing it in their face. Offer your own opinion that isn't based on commission %.

Also make sure to spot out poor quality products and review them so your audience knows not to buy it. They will know you don't recommend just any product which in turn builds more trust and increases your sales when you do recommend something.

Finding Problems To Solve

Now you have a written method, you need to understand your audience. Put yourself in the shoes of someone would be interested in your content.

Could you generally tell what kind of a person it would be? Would it be someone young or old? Men / women or doesn't really matter? What else could that person be interested in? What kind of questions does this person have? There's no point in writing about football on a site about babies, right? You don't have to guess their shoe size, but you need AT LEAST a general idea on who your audience is. The more you can define them, the better.

So now you know who you are targeting. next step is to conduct some research and find out what troubles them. Write down those questions. And when you have many, you have that more $$$ to earn. But you don't think about those things, right?

And speaking about money...

Don't spend money unless you need to

There are million problems you can and will face while doing IM. You can't solve the bunch by throwing money at them. Sure there are some problems that you can't fix by yourself. And these exact problems are the ones you should solve this way. But if you spend money on those that can be done by yourself with little research, you won't have enough for those that can't be solved so easily. Even better, if you learn to do things yourself, you will be able to solve the problem again if it comes up.

Now I don't mean going to the junkyard and scraping electronic parts to build yourself a server so you don't have to pay for hosting. Just try to do everything yourself and if you see it will take waaay too much of your time, then and only then should you spend money on it.

This is how you should build a long-term income online. Reading random methods and copying them to the letter is not.

I hope at least a part of this will stick in your head and that I didn't write all of this for nothing. It all may sound a bit general but this should be the foundation for everything you do in IM.

Shasta Nelson, M.Div.: Making New Year's Resolutions Based on Love

Shasta Nelson, M.Div.
Founder of womens friendship matching site, GirlFriendCircles.com, Author of Friendships Don't Just Happen!

If both Hanukkah and Christmas commemorate moments where we remember that God intervened in our lives -- be it by keeping a single-day of oil burning for eight days as the Jews rededicated their temple or impregnating a young woman to give birth to a baby who was to show the world what love looked like in action -- then the approach of New Year's should naturally stem from the awareness that God is among us. December reminds us that our lives are more than just ours. We go into January knowing that there is something bigger at play.

I want my New Year to be birthed from a really divine place. I want my hopes to feel magical. I want my dreams to feel in alignment with my work in this world. I want my resolutions to change more in this world than a few pounds off my body. I want my goals to not just feel like an obligatory to-do list or a re-hash of last years failed attempts.

Whatever belief system you have in place and whatever word you use for that which is bigger than us -- I hope you'll take the time to bring the true spirit of Hanukkah and Christmas into your New Year.

Who We Want to Be In 2013

Jim Wallis, the president and CEO of Sojourners and author of forthcoming book, On God's Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn't Learned about Serving the Common Good, sent out a newsletter this morning that speaks to this point. He spent the first part of 2012 researching and writing this book about the common good and how we seem to have lost this concept in our politics and our society.

He says, "What I learned in the course of writing was how ancient the concept of the common good really is." This quote dates back to the fourth century:

"This is the rule of most perfect Christianity, its most exact definition, its highest point, namely, the seeking of the common good ... for nothing can so make a person an imitator of Christ as caring for neighbors." -- John Chrysostom (ca. 347-407)

My roots are in Christianity, but yours doesn't need to be in order for that quote to still matter. In fact, some of the most beautiful "imitators of Christ" are the atheists, agnostics, other-religious, and non-religious people I know.

For no matter the religion we do or don't subscribe to, what most of us still quote would be what we call the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

In other words: Work toward the common good. Care about those around you. Love.

Setting Our New Year Intentions

So as I sit with that this morning, I want the seeds of my New Year's resolutions to come from that place of the common good. Therefore the question I need to be asking myself isn't only "How can I improve my life this year?" but also, "How can improving my life this year serve more people?"

Some of the questions I'm asking myself:

Am I as loving as I want to be?Am I acting with as much courage as I am meant to have?Am I becoming a more generous person each year?Am I growing in my own self-awareness so that I am taking more responsibility for my triggers, my responses, and my defensiveness?Am I living more often from a place of joy?Am I growing in my compassion and empathy for those around me?Am I seeing emotional growth in my life that excites me?

For many of those questions, I find myself pausing, unsure if I can unequivocally say yes. When I notice that pause, I am then asking, "What could I do in 2013 to become this more loving, courageous, and centered person that I want to be?"

Doesn't that feel so much more significant than beating ourselves up about our body weight, our spending habits, or any other number of actions that produce our immediate guilt? And don't we think that by focusing truly on who we want to become -- people with more joy, peace, patience, and courage -- that we'll find our other habits changing to align with what is now more true for ourselves? I think so.

So rather than encouraging you to add "Make three new friends this year" or "Call one long-distance friend each week" to your New Year's list, I'm instead inviting you to start from a deep and quiet place to ask yourself: "What quality can I grow that will help me love others better?" Who do you want to be? How do you want to expand?

Then whisper a prayer that expands that in you: "I'm willing to become a more loving, forgiving, generous, kind, centered, hopeful, and patient person."

Choose to be one more person in this world who cares about the common good, who doesn't vote only on self-interest, and who chooses to live from love instead of fear. And from that place of wanting to grow into a more loving person, trust that your love will pull more people in to give it back to you.

Your love will not produce an empty vacuum, but rather will create a circle of love surrounding you with more meaningful relationships, life purpose, and consequential joy. For love begets love. Love drives out fear. Love invites greater love. Love changes us. Love changes the world.

And that is what I call the greater good. Happy New Year!
