Looking for someone with experience at using Freelancer Websites

Hi DigitalPoint,

I'am looking for someone to join my team who has experience using freelancer type websites. You should know how to use them, how to get work from them and having a high ranking account would be beneficial but not necessary. Any other skills in web development, graphic design, etc. would be mostly welcomed but again not crucial. We are mainly looking for someone who knows how to use these sites and get work. We are specifically targeting freelancer.com and oDesk but other proposals are welcome. Please PM me or add me on Skype (jack.szafranek) for more information.

Thanks,
Jack

Quick and Dirty Guide to Using a Google Analytics Custom Dashboard

Now I’m taking a big leap of faith by assuming Google Analytics is your preferred arena for tracking your website data.

So let me explain the importance of having a Google Analytics custom dashboard to help you  make the right strategic decisions to succeed with your digital marketing efforts.

I’ll be honest, navigating your Google Analytics custom dashboard can become a tedious effort to acquire information needed to make an assessment of your online metrics. The worst part is, once you manage to find it, this same process will need to be repeated the next time around.

Most users would be accustomed to the standard reporting dashboard when they first log into Google Analytics. The standard dashboard has its advantages but sometimes it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, except you’re throwing that needle back in each time you log in – Onerous I know!

Dashboards have a number of purposes such as grabbing bits of data from different reports and assembling them into an easy to understand format. You can store up to 20 dashboards per profile and within each of these dashboards we can add a maximum of 12 widgets, with a widget representing a unique report/type of data you require.

Most of us understand the power of Google Analytics and how it makes analyzing your website traffic that much easier, but don’t you think the standard reporting is a little thin for savvy business owners?

This is where a Custom Dashboard can help!

By taking the custom route you can amalgamate data which otherwise would be difficult to procure under the Standard Reporting dashboard. I switched to using a Google Analytics Custom Dashboard to easily access the website data I require in a quick manner plus the ease of reproducing these reports is helpful.

Note from Ms. Ileane: I wanted to share a video with you with step-by-step instructions for creating the custom dashboard in Google Analytics. Damion Brown from Data Runs Deep was kind enough to record this video for us. Show him some LUV and visit his blog when you’re done watching.

Creating A Custom Dashboard in Google Analytics

Before I explain the “how” element, I would strongly recommend determining the “what”.

A well structured analytics dashboard will answer a few imminent questions so you can determine your site’s performance. The Starter Dashboard is good for a quick website checkup as you’ll be presented with data such as Visits, Average Visit Duration, Duration by Country/Territory to name a few.

Google Analytics Dashboard

If you run a local business, mobile or international traffic (as an example) is probably of little value to you. Below are a few key questions to consider with your dashboard:

Am I receiving less, more or the same level of traffic? I will include page views so if my traffic is increasing but there isn’t an equivalent rise in page views, it’s worth investigating the pages per visit. Do my visitors hang around or scoot off? Key metrics: Average Visit Duration and Bounce Rate. If you run a mini site, sure one page is sufficient to present your good material but this might not be the case for a larger site.  Be sure to understand the context of the data for each individual website.Who Are my Visitors? Your primary traffic sources would include Visits by Traffic Type, Organic, Paid, Direct and Other. Are My Visitors Obeying Instructions? Obeying is a strong term to use but if you’re an online marketer, your website will have a purpose and this can be measured by the Goal Conversion Rate. My approach is to establish a unique dashboard for site goals. This makes it dead easy to identify the % of visitors who are doing what I want.

That’s basically it, but I will add the following caveats:

1. I have only touched on the concept of an actionable custom dashboard, but you can definitely have more than one. I would recommend limiting too many variables in your dashboard as you might become overwhelmed. If there are several key data points, try and separate them across different dashboards e.g. Site Overview, SEO Metrics and Goal Performance.

2. The other point regarding the Google custom dashboard is that they display the “what” and not the “why”. The “why” element can only be recognized once you dissect the data. The purpose of a custom Google Analytics dashboard is to quickly check information and then prioritize the elements which require attention. It’s important to know why things are happening before you show others to avoid the dreaded “So what’s happened here?”

This section would require a post on it’s own, however, it’s very easy to set up your custom Google Analytics Dashboard. If you require a step-by-step tutorial, please refer to Google’s quick tutorial here or for a visual tutorial watch the embedded video above, or head over to Sharon Hurley Hall’s tutorial over at The Daily Egg.

The conversion dashboard does exactly what you would expect – track conversions! This can range from Ms. Ileane determining her email list subscriptions to e-commerce purchases and having them all in one area is truly poetry in motion for analytics lovers.

If you are still insure on the need for a conversion based custom dashboard, then let me share a scenario with you. What if you wanted to know the exact sources of traffic which was providing the most goal completions – Wouldn’t it a whole lot easier to determine where to allocate your marketing budget?

If you are interested in running this type of dashboard, click here.

Site Performance Dashboard

What does it really mean when your blog has a 85% bounce rate? Firstly, why is it this percentage and what action can you take? It’s time you dig deep to find out.

I will generally set up a custom dashboard which includes “Pages/Visit, “Average Visit Duration” and “Bounce Rate” to determine which pages are performing the best. You can also add Real Time data to your custom dashboard.

Click here to use a pre-configured dashboard which focuses on these metrics.

Now you have the answers at your finger tips in terms of which pages are gaining more traction and the sources of traffic which are providing these engaged visitors.

Site Engagement Dashboard

Would you like to see data on which countries your visitors are arriving from and the pages they are landing on?

You are in luck as the traffic custom dashboard is deal for this exercise and you can use the pre-configured dashboard here, however please add your own brand keywords.

There will be some effort required on your end with the “Visits – Organic Non-Brand” and “Visits – Organic Brand” widgets. Simply replace “yourbrandkeywordshere” with your keywords.

Once you’re done customising  you’ll have a good overview of the type of traffic on your website but feel free to test the widgets accordingly.

traffic custom dashboard

I hope you have a better handle of  your Google Analytics dashboard and importance of customizing to quickly gauge how well your site is doing and the actions needed to improve where necessary. It helps to review your Google Analytics custom dashboard setups regularly to ensure you are receiving the information you need and this might be a matter of adding or removing certain widgets. In no time will you have a solid understanding of your site’s health which you can swallow in small bits.

Check out these other cool custom dashboards shared by Google Analytics users throughout the community.

All the best with your tracking!

Please let me know what you think about Google Analytics Custom Dashboards and which one is your favorite in the comments below!

Has anyone any experience with using module mod_bookmarkus?

Ahh, that's different than my definition of a crash. A crash (to me) would be a blank white screen where nothing shows up at all.

If the page is drawing at all then there is a problem in the HTML somewhere. Usually when things show up in the wrong place on a page it is because someone did not close an HTML tag properly. In most cases that is caused by pasting text from a word processing program into a text box in the module or on the page somewhere.

If it only happens when you publish the module then look at the text being displayed in the module and see if it looks correct. If it isn't then go into the backend and edit that text. View it in HTML view and make sure there are no open without an accompaning to close it out.

If you let us know the site URL I can take a look and see if I can tell.

Using Another Website Articles - Legal or Not?

If they have an RSS feed, you may be able to use that.

However, if you intend to copy their entire article and attribute the source to them is no different than reprinting every NYTimes article (when NYT charges for the archives). Be prepared to have your host provider shut down your account if the authors pursue copyrighted material issues.

If you are using articles from an articles directory, that's a different story.

Remember When Using Twitter Was Fun And Easy?

Recently, Twitter released the latest update to its API (application programming interface) and completely cleared out support for the previous version. An API is a programming language that allows two different applications to interface with each other, such as displaying a list of your Tweets at a website. Since then, what was once a simple process is now a royal pain in the neck.

ADAPTISTRATION-GUY-070For example, in order to display a list of tweets from a specific account all you needed in most cases was the Twitter username or the user URL, such as @adaptistration or https://twitter.com/Adaptistration. Now users will need to jump through a myriad of hoops in order to set something like that up, all of which begins at a site you’ll love to hate in short order: https://dev.twitter.com/apps.

Officially, Twitter claims the update is to provide a more consistent user experience but that’s mostly corporate spin for offering less flexibility, higher development costs, and usage limits (not to mention an ideal way for Twitter to begin serving up ads alongside with your feed data).

All grousing aside, here’s what you need to do today: check any widgets or scripts at your organization’s website that display a Twitter feed to see if they are still functioning properly. If any of them aren’t, odds are it is because they are no longer compliant with Twitter’s API 1.1 standards.

In order to get them working again, you’ll need to find a different third party solution (or download an updated version), pay a developer to write a new version, or just find a different solution. Either way, you’ll still need to get over to time-suck central to create a Twitter app, generate access tokens and secret keys, and making sure the rest of your related OAuth settings are properly setup.

That executive is now a dear colleague and friend but the day that consulting contract began with her orchestra, she was convinced I was a hatchet-man brought in by the board to clean house. I understand where the trepidation comes from as a great deal of my consulting and technology provider work for arts organizations involves due diligence, separating fact from fiction, interpreting spin, as well as performance review and oversight. So yes, sometimes that work results in one or two individuals "aggressively embracing career change" but far more often than not, it reinforces and clarifies exactly what works and why. In short, it doesn't matter if you know where all the bodies are buried if you can't keep your own clients out of the ground, and I'm fortunate enough to say that for more than 15 years, I've done exactly that for groups of all budget size from Qatar to Kathmandu. EasyBuckets - Is this something you could see yourself using

This is definitely something something I could see myself using.

On the sales page I'd suggest placing small, relevant screenshots under each of the headings (collaborate, stay organized, etc.). There's a lot of scrolling to do before I can see a screenshot. Those are usually the first things that get people interested in an app like this.

The striped background on the demo is very distracting and makes the text at the top right difficult to read. Apart from this the client interface is very simple and very self-explanatory.

Good luck with it. :)

You’re Still Using 12px Font Size!?!

Back on 2/24/2012 we examined emerging standards for web font sizes and it was a surprise to some folks that using 16px (or approx. 1em) for standard body font was recommended. Nonetheless, it is still surprising to encounter so many performing arts org websites that rely on 12px standards.

All of the following screencaps were taken on 5/23/2013 and are from the first four orchestra websites that came to mind. Each one had a standard body font of 11px or 12px and even though I knew a number of orchestra websites were using tiny font sizes, it was still surprising to see 100 percent of the initial sampling fall into that category.

font size sampling

But when it comes to readability and overall favorable user experiences, those are dangerously small sizes (details for why are in the 2012 article). Recent studies indicate that 16px is most common with 14px not far behind, but even 18px is used twice as much over 12px.

onlineIn an ideal arrangement, you already have direct control over typography settings such as the font size for body text and headlines and can, therefore, begin experimenting with sizing up and out of the 12px pit.

If you don’t, you need to begin working on your web provider to get this change going. If they make the task sound like moving mountains then it’s high time to consider finding a new provider.

Simply put, you aren’t going to catch up by going slower and web standards change at an increasing pace so you need to be in a position to have enough flexibility and control to make changes as needed.

For more on this topic, head over to Jan Constantin’s excellent case study article, Typographic Design Patterns And Current Practices (2013 Edition), at SmashingMagazine.com where you’ll find a wealth of additional info on trends for headlines, typefaces, line heights, and a bevy of additional typographic treats.

How to Communicate your Displeasure with Neighbours using Wi-Fi

Got noisy neighbours and want them to turn down the volume of music? You can send them a complaint message with the help of your Wi-Fi.

You want to maintain amicable relations with your neighbors but their loud music has become too annoying and distracting. What can a good way to communicate your displeasure and get them to turn down the volume?

Wi-Fi SSID Got noisy neighbors? Express your displeasure over WiFi.

@Westendproducer shares a clever idea on Twitter.

Your wireless network has a name (or SSID) that will show up on your neighbour’s computer and mobile phone. You can put the complaint message in your Wi-Fi name and your neighbours may see it when their device is scanning for available wireless names to connect to the Internet.

And unless you are the only house in that area with a router, your neighbours are less likely to figure out who is showing them that message. This is much like leaving a sticky note on your neighbour’s door anonymously.

Wireless names can also be used to share your contact information with neighbours.

Using Google Disavow to Save My SEO

Hi,

I am using my disavow tool to remove bad, spammy, junk, irrelevant links to one of my sites.
Trying to save a good site that was crashed - prolly by Penguin in mid 2012. Couldn't get it ranked in the top 100

I need your advice on this...

1) English language site got a bunch of spammy backlinks. Google Webmaster Tools shows 250+ links that are 100 % spam/trash/irrelevant from WordPress spam content farms, linkfarm directories.

2) AWSTATS sees DIFFERENT links - not as many, but shows traffic from a bunch of Russian, Asian, Ukrainian sites that have nothing to do with my site's subject...

3) Sometimes I don't see, cannot find my link on those pages... maybe they are cloaked? Google sees them, AWSTATS too, but I cannot... not visually...

4) I type in "www.mysite.com" in Google, because it shows more sites with more links than the "link:www.mysite.com"... and I found 9100+ spammy backlinks! Oh my LORD! Most of them from webmaster/SEO/site stats sites like http://www.markosweb.comhttp://www.pagesinventory.com and others...

Questions:
-those (described at 4.) 9100+ links, prolly like 8.000 at least are spammy SEO, site stats, link farm, content farm pages should be purged... how do I do it? (I normally copy-paste the links into a .txt file and upload to the Google Webmaster Tools) >>> but this work could last 1 month (provided that I can list 266.66 link per day and upload the file every day!)
-any other way to clear the spammy pages?
-do I have to purge/erase/disavow those webmaster/SEO/site stats pages? (irrelevant clones with links to my sites, they look like WHOIS pages, but there are thousands... they multiply like bacteria, I would personally get rid of them...)

Right now I am focusing on purging the 100 % senseless spam and the linkfarm directory backlinks. My greatest dilemma is about those SEO/site stats pages... technically they are spam as well, but their purpose is different (so not malintended)...

Advice?

How to Make a “No Sew” Bag Using Duct Tape

8 authors | 17 revisions | Last updated: December 17, 2012

Tote bags aren't only for those who enjoy sewing––a tote bag can be easily fashioned from the ubiquitous duct tape. Even better, the end result is actually very presentable and since it's one of a kind, you'll have others asking you where you got it from! Here's what to do to craft your own "no-sew" duct tape bag.

Edit Steps1Choose the fabric for your tote bag. Choose fabric that is fashionable and durable (steer clear of flimsier materials like silk). Purchase a few yards/1-2 meters or so of fabric.

Purchase a strong pair of sewing scissors. Because you will be cutting fabric with these scissors you will need a pair that will easily cut through the fabric you chose.

2Find duct tape that matches or enhances the fabric. The duct tape will serve as your “needle and thread”, plus it will act as the bag's liner. As such, while the typical industrial grey duct tape will suffice, consider purchasing a complementary color or design.

3Cut the bag pattern. Draw up a simple tote pattern, making it large enough for your needs. The simplest design is a large rectangle.

To check that the size is adequate for your needs, fold the fabric evenly in half. This will create the bottom and sides of your bag and you'll be able to assess that the fabric size is sufficient. Cut the rectangle shape out when you're satisfied.

4Cut two squares from the bottom portion of the bag. Make each square approximately 1” (2.5cm) high and 1.5” (3.8cm) wide. For a larger bag, increase the measurements. These will be folded over for a neat base finish later on.

5Line the inside of the bag with duct tape. Turn the fabric over (if it has two sides) and then line the entire inner side of the piece of fabric with duct tape.

Start at the top of the fabric. Cut strips of duct tape that will be placed along the top. Be sure to overlap each strip of tape for full coverage.

Continue this process until the entire inside portion of the bag is covered with duct tape. Trim away any excess tape.

6Create the bag handle. Measure and design the handle to be placed at each end of the bag while it lies on a flat surface. You can use the design shown here, or vary it as desired. Draw the cutting pattern on each side of the bag.Begin the bag handle approximately 1.5” (3.8cm) from the end. Mark the center of the tape on each end so you have an evenly distributed handle (and one that will match up once the bag has been created).

Draw a 2” (5cm) line on each side of the 1.5” (3.8cm) mark and 1” (2.5cm) down each side. You should essentially be drawing a box shape. Do this on each end of the duct tape bag.

Draw a horizontal line running across the middle of the box but don’t touch each end. Instead, create a triangle shape at the end of each side––inside the box you will see a long line through the middle with a triangle shape at each end. Do this for each bag handle (on each side of the duct tape fabric).

7Cut out the bag handle. You will be cutting along the line and triangle marking you made inside each box for the handle. You may need to start your cuts using a small knife or box cutter in the event you have trouble getting your scissors through the fabric.

Once these portions have been cut on each end, fold back the flaps you’ve created and secure with a piece of duct tape.

8Add lining to the top edges of your bag. This step isn’t completely necessary but provides a more finished look to your tote.Turn the bag over so that the finished side (not the duct tape side) is facing up.

Lay a piece of duct tape over the top 1/2” (1.3cm) edge of the bag, fold over and tape down inside the bag.

Trim away any excess tape for a finished look.

9Put your bag together. This is where you could sew it, but a sturdy stapler will do the trick instead.Fold bag in half, duct tape side facing outward. This way, the staples will be hidden if you staple it from the inside.

Staple the sides of the bag, about ½” (1.3cm) away from the edges. Clip the corners on the top and continue on the other side.

10Seal the inside edges using duct tape. You will still have those ½” inch (1.3cm) pieces sticking out, so a more professional finish will be to tape down those edges.Get a better angle on taping down the edges by slipping a large block, book or item inside bag.

Measure the edges and then pull the same amount of duct tape from your roll.

Lay the duct tape down on top of the edges, beginning on one end and smoothing down as you move down the side of the bag.

11Close the bottom corners by stapling the bottom edges together ½” (1.3cm) from the edge.

Fold the seam along the bottom of the bag and seal with duct tape. Trim and fold edges. Repeat on the other side.

12Turn the bag inside out so that the desired fabric is facing outward. You can also get an idea of any additional trimming or duct tape sealants that might finish the look.

13Now you can use your bag!

Edit TipsIf you want to add magnets to the top of your tote handle, place them in the top of the inside of the handle before you seal with duct tape.Create matching smaller bags using the same techniques but with the same material.Consider making these to use as gifts for friends. You could even personalize them by adding iron on pictures or lettering.

Edit WarningsDuct tape is sticky––a little oil rubbed carefully on the scissors can help remove sticky build-up from the blades; wipe clean before using on fabric again.Mind your skin––duct tape is fierce when it adheres to skin! To release duct tape from skin gently, use an essential oil such as lavender (safe for direct application), a skin lotion or vegetable oil, to help loosen the stickiness. This project is suitable only for those able to use scissors responsibly. Adults should supervise children.
