C# Design Patterns : Singleton

Today, I'm sharing that might benefits you.

Design patterns are recurring solutions to software design problems we find again and again in real-world object oriented application development. Design patterns are there to address a variety of design problems, from small issues to large, architecture-level problems. Here, I am starting a thread which explains different categories of design patterns and their usage. Design patterns are not language specific. Here I have tried to use C# to demonstrate design patterns examples. Design patterns are categorized in three groups: Creational, Structural, and Behavioral. I will be using following format to explain design pattern to make it consistent across all patterns. Name and Category: Describes the name of the pattern and category of pattern (Creational, Structural, or) Behavioral). Intent: It describes what kind of design problem this pattern addresses. Motivation: A scenario that illustrates a design problem and how the class and object structures in the pattern solve the problem. Consequences: It will describe the trade-offs of design pattern.

Here, we will have a look at Singleton design pattern. Name and Category: Singleton (Creational Pattern)
Intent: Ensure a class only has one instance, and provide a global point of access to it.
Motivation: Sometimes we want just a single instance of a class to exist in the system For example;
we want just one window manager. Or just one factory for afamily of products. Let us look into implementation.
How can I make only one instance of my class?

First, we will create a private constructor of our class. When constructor is a private then object of that class can not be created at all.

Here, we are restricting user from creating an instance of a class. But as per our requirement we need to have one and only one constructor. In order to achieve that, we will create a one static method which in turn returns an object of class. Here, is how it goes:

// Class : Singleton.cs
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Text;
namespace DesignPattern
{
class Singleton
{
private static Singleton singleton = null;
/*** Returns a reference to the single instance.
* Creates the instance if it does not yet exist.
* (This is called lazy instantiation.) */
public static Singleton Instance()
{
if (null == singleton)
singleton = new Singleton();
return singleton;
}
/** The Singleton Constructor.
* Note that it is private!
* No client can instantiate a Singleton object! */
private Singleton() { }
}
}
Here, we have a static method Instance() which takes care of single instance.
In this method first we check whether the static private variable singleton is created or not.
If it is null it will create a constructor.
If it is not null it will return the existing one.
So we are sure that only one instance of our class will be created.
Now let us think in different way.
If two threads are trying to access the Instance () method at the same time what will happen? In that case we will be having two instance of our class. It means our class is not a singleton. right?? So, how can we achieve singleton object?

// Class : Singleton.cs
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading;
namespace DesignPattern
{
class Singleton
{
private static Singleton singleton = null;
// Lock synchronization object
private static object syncLock = new object();
/*** Returns a reference to the single instance.
** Creates the instance if it does not yet exist.
* (This is called lazy instantiation.) */
public static Singleton Instance()
{
/* Support multithreaded applications through
* 'Double checked locking' pattern which (once
* the instance exists) avoids locking each
* time the method is invoked*/
if (null == singleton)
{
lock (syncLock)
{
if (singleton == null)
{
singleton = new Singleton();
}
}
}
return singleton;
}
/** The Singleton Constructor.
* Note that it is private!
* No client can instantiate a Singleton object! */
private Singleton()
{}
}
}
This will make sure that only single instance of class will be created. Consequences:
Benefits: 1) Controlled access to sole instance.

Hope you liked it.

Hayden Panettiere Tattoo Gaffe Is The Topic Of Conversation In Glamour (PHOTOS)

These days, Hayden Panettiere is getting plenty attention for both her role on "Nashville" and her rumored engagement to boxer Wladimir Klitschko. So it's no wonder she doesn't spend much time dwelling on her regrets -- specifically, that infamous misspelled tattoo.

The blonde beauty covers Glamour's May issue, looking summer-ready in a yellow Dolce & Gabbana two-piece. Inside the mag, Hayden talks about her career, the aforementioned beau ... and that pesky botched ink on her back. But don't worry, the 23-year-old doesn't harbor any bitterness:

“It’s Italian: Vivere senza rimpianti. When I was younger, I was upset, and my dad said he wanted to show me something. He slammed one door of the bathroom, and the closet door popped open—it was a trick with the air. He said, ‘Whenever one door closes, another one always opens.’ So my tattoo means ‘Live without regrets.’ It’s not that you don’t regret things in life, but you at least try to learn from them. It’s misspelled too [accidentally, as rimipianti]—so I literally have to live by that advice!”

Good advice for all of us, no? Of course, Hayden's not the only celebrity who's made a tattoo gaffe. Christina Aguilera, David Beckham, Britney Spears and Rihanna have all admitted to their body art blunders. And who could forget Johnny Depp's infamous "Wino Forever" ink?

Obviously, Ms. Panettiere is quite the trooper. Check out some shots from her Glamour shoot below and pick up the issue on April 9 for the full interview.

The irony is killing us.

Our first encounter with the misspelled tattoo was on Hayden Panettiere. An Italian phrase that ironically means "to live without regrets" has an extra "i" added in "rimpianti."

Another tragic tattoo, this time with an entire syllable missing.

Yeah, it's the system that holds you down. It's also the same system that normally teaches you how to spell.

What started out as a mistake has now become a tattoo trend in the windy city.

...But your tattoo artist's spelling abilities are not "awsome."

She's either bad at spelling or has a really interesting fetish.

Oh the things you'll know tomorrow, like regret, for example.

Not to disappoint you, but you're going to be receiving a lot of the same "coments" on your tattoo.

...tattoo should probably be spell-checked!

Okay, maybe the back of the "R" and the top of the "X" are supposed to form the missing "T", but we're willing to assume he forgot it and just doesn't give a s**t.

He got so caught up in the Gothic lettering he forgot you can't just add extra e's onto words for old-timey effect.

CBS Sports Chairman: No Regrets On Kevin Ware Injury Coverage

NEW YORK — The chairman of CBS Sports had no regrets about banning further replays of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware's gruesome broken leg and says if anyone wants to watch it on the Internet, that's fine with him.

CBS aired two quick replays Sunday from a wide enough distance for viewers to see the leg land awkwardly, but not any blood or bone. It hasn't been shown since on CBS.

"In today's world, if you want to see a piece of video instantaneously that you just saw on television, there are a million ways to do that," Sean McManus said Monday. "I've seen statistics on the millions of views this piece of footage has had on YouTube and I have no problem with that."

Ware was injured after attempting to block a shot in the Cardinals' regional final victory over Duke. The sight of his tibia bone protruding from his skin left coach Rick Pitino and his teammates in tears. Ware was operated on later Sunday and is expected to watch Louisville's Final Four appearance Saturday from the bench in Atlanta.

The network received praise for restraint, although McManus said he knew people would say CBS should have shown it more because the network was in a position to document history.

Several postings of CBS' coverage were quickly available with a search for Ware's name Monday afternoon.

"If people want to go watch the footage for whatever reason, they have a right to do so," McManus said. "I just didn't think we had any obligation to be the facilitator of putting that footage back on the screen. We documented it, we described it and we showed it, and I think that was enough."

It's considerably different from when Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann broke his leg during a Monday Night Football game in 1985. It was equally horrific, with bone jutting through skin. Back then, about the only way a viewer could see it again is if a television producer decided to show the replay, said Jeff Billings, a sports media professor at the University of Alabama.

Aside from the availability of footage online now, many viewers have DVRs that enabled them to replay the incident as much as they wanted, Billings said.

"Current technology makes it a whole lot easier for them to take the high road," he said.

CBS concentrated on the methods it had to tell the story that others did not have – access to players and coaches and pictures of their reactions, he said.

The unedited video was hard to find on national news outlets within 24 hours, when it was still a fresh news story. CNN aired the sequence, but blurred out Ware's leg so the break was not visible. Fox News Channel and MSNBC did not show the video, representatives said.

ABC's "Good Morning America" showed footage, again with the leg blurred. NBC's "Today" show and the CBS morning news program did not show it.

At ESPN, executives set specific guidelines: Producers had discretion to use it on their own programs but they were to only show it once, not air it in slow motion and warn viewers in advance. Through Monday afternoon, spokesman Josh Krulewitz said he did not believe the network had shown it.

McManus said CBS producers had not discussed whether the footage will be seen again; opportunities may come if Ware shows up at the Final Four this weekend. But he said he didn't see any reason why it should be.

"I just think that it's not necessary," he said. "It's not journalistically important that we do that now because we told the story. I think we'll move on from that footage."

Decisions like the one made by McManus and his producers are made by broadcasters globally.

In Britain, sports broadcasters often self-censor footage they feel might distress viewers.

Often an incident, such as a dangerous tackle in football, will be frozen at the point of contact to judge a referee's decision but no further footage will be shown.

Sky Sports, which is operated by BSkyB, chose not to show replays in 2008 after then-Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva's left leg was broken following a tackle by Martin Taylor during a Premier League match at Birmingham.

During an FA Cup match being broadcast globally in March 2012, then-Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest on the pitch at Tottenham.

ESPN's British channel, which was broadcasting the match live, showed no close-ups as Muamba, who survived, received treatment on the turf, instead it focused on the reaction of other players or wide shots of the stadium.

Louisville To Final Four: Peyton Siva Leads Cardinals Past Duke 85-63 After Injury To Kevin Ware

INDIANAPOLIS — Crying and shaken by the sight of Kevin Ware writhing on the court, his right leg splintered, Rick Pitino and his Louisville players had no idea how they were going to pull it together with a half still left to play and a Final Four berth on the line.

Ware showed them the way.

"I don't think we could have gathered ourselves – I know I couldn't have – if Kevin didn't say over and over again, `Just go win the game,'" Pitino said. "I don't think we could have gone in the locker room with a loss after seeing that. We had to gather ourselves. We couldn't lose this game for him.

"We just couldn't."

With Russ Smith, Peyton Siva and Gorgui Dieng leading the way, the Cardinals finally shook off their grief early in the second half, erupting for a 13-2 run that Duke was powerless to answer. The 85-63 victory clinched a second straight trip to the Final Four for the top-seeded Cardinals, who are determined to win it all for Ware, a New York City native who moved to the Atlanta area for high school.

The Cardinals (33-5) will play Wichita State in the national semifinals next Saturday. The ninth-seeded Shockers (30-8) added to their streak of upsets with a 70-66 victory over Ohio State on Saturday night.

As the final seconds ticked down, Ware's best friend on the team, Chane Behanan, put on the guard's No. 5 jersey and stood at the end of the bench, screaming. Cardinals fans chanted "Kevin Ware! Kevin Ware!"

"We talked about it every timeout, `Get Kevin home,'" Pitino said.

Smith finished with 23 points and earned Most Outstanding Player honors for the Midwest Region. Siva added 16 while Dieng had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Mason Plumlee had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Duke. But the Blue Devils (30-6) couldn't overcome a poor start by Seth Curry, who scored all 12 of his points in the second half, or their foul trouble.

"I thought we had a chance there, and then, boom," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "That's what they do to teams. They can boom you."

This was the first time Pitino and Krzyzewski had met in the regional finals since that 1992 classic that ended with Christian Laettner's improbable buzzer-beater, a game now considered one of the best in NCAA tournament history.

This game will be remembered, too, but for a very different – and much more somber – reason.

With 6:33 left in the first half, Ware, who has played a key role in Louisville's 14-game winning streak, jumped to try and block Tyler Thornton's 3-point shot. When he landed, Ware's right leg snapped midway between his ankle and knee, the bone skewing almost at a right angle. Ware dropped to the floor right in front of the Louisville bench and, almost in unison, his teammates turned away in horror. Thornton grimaced, putting his hand to his mouth as he turned around.

"I heard it and then I seen what happened, (the bone) come out," Smith said. "I immediately just, like, fell. I almost didn't feel nothing."

Pitino went to help Ware up and then saw the leg, which broke in two places.

"I literally almost threw up," Pitino said, his voice catching. "Then I just wanted to get a towel to get it over that. But all the players came over and saw it."

Louisville forward Wayne Blackshear fell to the floor and Behanan looked as if he was going to be sick on the court, kneeling on his hands and feet. Luke Hancock patted Ware's chest as doctors worked on the sophomore and Smith walked away, pulling his jersey over his eyes. The arena was silent, and several fans wept and bowed their heads.

Pitino had tears in his eyes as he tried to console his players. Dieng draped an arm around the shoulders of Smith, who repeatedly wiped at his eyes and shook his head.

"It was really hard for me to pull myself together," Smith said. "I didn't ever think in a million years I would ever see something like that. And that it happened, especially, to a guy like Kevin Ware, I was completely devastated."

As the Cardinals (33-5) gathered at halfcourt to try and regroup before play resumed, Pitino called them over to the sideline, saying Ware wanted to talk to them before he left.

"Basically, the bone popped out of the skin. It broke in two spots," Pitino said. "Remember the bone is six inches out of his leg, and all he's yelling is `Win the game, win the game.' I've never seen anything like that."

Added Siva, "He told us countless times: `Just go win this game for me. Just go win this game. Don't worry about me, I'm fine. Just go win this game.' I don't know how he did it. I don't know how he got strength to do it, but he told us to go out there and win."

News of the injury dominated social media. Joe Theismann, whose NFL career ended with a horrific broken leg, said on Twitter, "Watching Duke/ Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware."

Pitino wiped away tears as Ware, whom Smith described as the Cardinals' "little brother" was wheeled off the court. Surgeons reset his leg and inserted a rod in his right tibia during a 2-hour operation at Methodist Hospital. Ware is expected to remain in Indianapolis until at least Tuesday, and Pitino said he, his son Richard and the Cardinals' equipment manager planned to visit the player later Sunday night and again Monday morning.

"He'll come back," Pitino said. "We'll get Kevin back as good as new."

But when play resumed, it was clear the Cardinals' minds were elsewhere. They missed four of their next five shots along with two free throws, and were uncharacteristically sloppy. But they regrouped after a timeout, with Smith's finger roll sparking a 12-6 run to finish the half that gave them a 35-32 lead.

Smith picked up where he left off at the start of the second half, making all three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to give Louisville a 38-32 lead, its largest of the game to that point.

But just as he did against Michigan State, Curry got hot after halftime, making two 3s in the first three minutes. A Plumlee dunk tied the game at 42.

That, however, was all Louisville needed.

Clawing for every rebound, diving on the floor for loose balls and cranking the intensity up even higher on their ferocious defense, the Cardinals were not going to lose.

And everyone, Duke included, knew it.

This was only the second time the Blue Devils have reached the regional finals and failed to make it to the Final Four. The only other time? In 1998, when the Blue Devils lost to eventual national champion Kentucky.

"We got beat by a better team," Krzyzewski said.

Smith made a layup. Siva had a nice jumper at the top of the key, and then followed with a layup. Just like that, Louisville was off. Siva had seven points during the run, which was only halted by a timeout. But Dieng kept it rolling with a jumper and a tip-in. After Plumlee made a pair of free throws, Hancock made a 3 and the roof of the Lucas Oil Stadium nearly blew off.

"When Kevin went down, it was devastating for all of us," Siva said. "We just came together and Kevin Ware really was the reason why we pulled this game out.

"Everybody on the team just wanted to step up for him. For us to show that focus and that determination, we just tried to do it for him."

Virginia Vehicle Pileup: 3 Killed In 75-Vehicle Crash Near Virginia-North Carolina Border

GALAX, Va. — Nearly 100 vehicles crashed Sunday along a mountainous, foggy stretch of interstate near the Virginia-North Carolina border, killing three people and injuring 25 others.

Police said traffic along Interstate 77 in southwest Virginia backed up for about 8 miles in the southbound lanes after the accidents. Authorities closed the northbound lanes so that fire trucks, ambulances and police could get to the series of chain-reaction wrecks.

Virginia State Police determined there were 17 separate crashes involving 95 vehicles within a mile span near the base of Fancy Gap Mountain, spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. The crashes began around 1:15 p.m. Sunday when there was heavy fog in the area.

"This mountain is notorious for fog banks. They have advance signs warning people. But the problem is, people are seeing well and suddenly they're in a fog bank," said Glen Sage of the American Red Cross office in the town of Galax.

Since 1997, there have been at least six such pileups on the mountain but Sunday's crash was the most deadly, according to The Roanoke Times. Two people died in crashes involving dozens of vehicles in both 2000 and 2010.

Overhead message boards warned drivers since about 6 a.m. Sunday to slow down because of the severe fog, Geller said. The crashes were mostly caused by drivers going too fast for conditions.

At the "epicenter" was a wreck involving up to eight vehicles, some of which caught fire, Geller said. Photos from the accident scene showed a burned out tractor-trailer and several crumpled vehicles badly charred. Those taken to hospitals had injuries ranging from serious to minor.

School buses took stranded people to shelters and hotels.

Nina Rose, 20, and her mother, were driving home to Rochester, N.Y., when they encountered the pileup.

"With so much fog we didn't see much around it," Rose told the Roanoke newspaper. "As we got further up we just saw a bunch of people standing on the median, just with their kids and families all together. There were cars smashed into other cars, and cars just underneath other semi-trucks."

Darrell Utt, 17, of Moore County, N.C., was stuck in the northbound lanes for about three hours as he traveled to Huntington, W. Va.

"It was really foggy at first," he said. "We probably saw over 50 tow trucks. We saw about five cars come down and three semi-trucks. One of them, it didn't even look like a car, it looked like a chunk of metal."

Utt said motorists were calm, despite the traffic jam.

"There was no road rage or anything, everyone understood the severity of how bad this was before we even began to figure out what exactly happened," he said.

Authorities reopened the northbound lanes Sunday night and hoped to have the other side cleared later in the evening.

Police did not immediately release the names of those killed.

2013 Allergy Season Could Be The Worst Ever, Thanks To Climate Change, Some Experts Say

From Marlene Cimons, Climate Nexus:

Marlene Cimons writes for Climate Nexus, a nonprofit that aims to tell the climate story in innovative ways that raise awareness of, dispel misinformation about, and showcase solutions to climate change and energy issues in the United States.  She contributed this article to LiveScience's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

This spring could be the most miserable one ever for those of us with allergies, and we can blame it on climate change.

People in the Northeast, in particular, will be among the hardest hit in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and this winter's record-setting blizzard, both of which dumped massive amounts of precipitation over the region.

"[This] promises a robust allergy season,'' said Leonard Bielory, an allergy and immunology specialist with the Rutgers Center for Environmental Prediction in New Jersey, a state which suffered widespread destruction from Sandy.

"The first airborne tree pollen has been measured in recent days, and while the count is still low, some allergy sufferers are showing comparatively severe symptoms,'' he added. "I expect more tree pollen than ever to be released this spring, and the reaction to the early pollen to be unusually strong.''

The planet is getting warmer, and human behavior is responsible. The changing climate has brought early spring, late-ending fall, and large amounts of rain and snow.  All of that, combined with historically high levels of carbon dioxide in the air, nourishes the trees and plants that make pollen, and encourages more fungal growth, such as mold, and the release of spores.

We will be paying a wretched price in the coming months for the behavior fueling the explosion of pollen, which are the tiny reproductive cells found in trees, weeds, plants and grasses.  By all accounts, there will be more pollen this year than ever before.

"The trees are going to burst in the next week or two, and we will get a burst of pollen higher than in past years,'' said Bielory, who predicts that pollen counts will increase by 30 percent by 2020 and, "in a perfect test-tube world, will double by 2040 because of climate change.'' [Study: Pollen Counts To More Than Double By 2040]

Most trees release their pollen in the early spring, while grasses do so in late spring and early summer. Ragweed makes its pollen in the late summer and early fall.

And pollen production is only part of the impact that global warming is going to have on allergies and asthma — and our health overall.

In areas of the country experiencing prolonged heat and drought, dust will worsen air pollution, exacerbating asthma and other respiratory diseases. In other regions, climate change will affect the insect population — their stings and bites can provoke fatal allergic reactions in sensitive individuals — as well as the proliferation of such vines as poison ivy. Poison ivy thrives with increased carbon dioxide, and as a result, now makes a far more potent urushiol — the oil that causes poison-ivy-triggered rashes — than in the past. [8 Ways Global Warming Is Already Changing the World]

Current evidence also suggests that climate change will increase the concentration of ground-level ozone, particularly in Northeastern, Midwestern and Western cities, causing an increase in respiratory diseases.

In short, if you have allergies or asthma, climate change is going to make you a lot sicker now and in the coming years.

Allergic diseases are the sixth leading cause of chronic disease in the United States, with an annual cost of $18 billion, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies annually.

Asthma afflicts about 20 million Americans, and is rising around the world, according to the CDC. Moreover, some public health experts regard the global increase of asthma as an early health effect of climate change, and a harbinger of more health dangers to come.

In fact, one study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology called climate change "potentially the largest global threat to human health ever encountered,'' predicting more injury, disease and death from natural disasters, heat waves, infections and widespread malnutrition, as well as more allergic and air-pollution illnesses and death.

If you are lucky enough to be free from allergies, don't make the mistake of dismissing them as nothing more than a minor annoyance. Allergies can have a serious impact on the quality of life, and in some circumstances — a bee sting, for example, or if they trigger an asthma attack — they can kill.

"This is not just a matter of having a runny nose,'' said Jeffrey Demain, director of the Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Center of Alaska.  "Allergies affect the ability to go to work and go to school, and they affect school and work performance. They interfere with playing sports, social opportunities, how well you sleep, your relationships and your overall general happiness.''

On average, someone with allergic disorders experiences a quality of life 35 percent less than the general population, Demain said. "It really is quite dramatic,'' he said.

Allergies occur when the body's immune system overreacts to a substance that generally doesn't bother other people. The allergens can prompt sneezing, coughing, watery eyes and itching. In the years between 1970 and 2000, allergic rhinitis among Americans has risen from 10 percent to 30 percent, which correlates to similar increases in positive allergy skin-test results, according to Bielory.

Most experts believe the impact of climate change on allergic diseases will vary by region, depending on latitude, altitude, rainfall and storms, land-use patterns, urbanization, transportation and energy production. Drought, for example, will contribute to increasing air pollution, while heavy rain will wash the pollution away, but encourage the growth of mold.

Bielory and his colleagues, reporting in a 2011 study, showed that the ragweed-pollen season has become longer in northern areas of the country in recent years, and points to climate change as the reason this is happening.

"We drew a line from Texas to Canada,'' he explained. "The pollen count duration remained the same in Texas, but changed as you moved north. Even though you are heading north to Canada, the pollen started earlier and ended later — and it should have been shortening. This was due to earlier springs and the later onset of fall. Frost wasn't occurring as early as it used to, so ragweed was pollinating later.''

Pollen levels per plant are increasing as a result of escalating concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the plants themselves are growing bigger, experts say.

"The increased pollen is probably a way for the plant to adapt,'' said Demain, who also is an associate clinical professor at the University of Washington. "They become larger and produce much more pollen. More people are going to develop asthma and allergies, and it's going to be severe.''

Stopping human activities that contribute to climate change might help future generations avoid these risks, but the rest of us — like the plants themselves — will have to adapt. We also can hope for a new medical breakthrough that will turn off the allergic response.

In the meantime, stay inside and keep your windows closed.

Tim Phares, Applebee's Employee, Allegedly Assaulted By Coworker's Husband Over Sexual Orientation

An Applebee's server in Rice Lake, Wisc., was allegedly beaten with a 2-by-4-inch piece of wood over questions regarding his sexual orientation.

He says he was then asked not to return to work because the incident had attracted too much negative publicity for the restaurant, though Applebee's denies this allegation.

Applebee's employee Tim Phares told the Wisconsin Gazette that he and his sister were at the parking lot of a different restaurant on March 17, when an SUV pulled in behind them carrying his coworker Shannon Hendricks and her husband, Rien.

“[Rien Hendricks] was getting out of his vehicle, and he said, ‘F*****g f****t, I’m going to kill you,’” Phares told the news outlet. Shortly thereafter, he was hit in the head and lost consciousness, he said.

Phares' sister, Krista, alerted the police and later identified Shannon and Rien Hendricks as suspects.

"I saw my brother laying in a pool of blood on the pavement and literally thought he was dead," Krista said in a Facebook post, according to a blog called Hispanic News Network.

Rien has since been charged with substantial battery with intend to cause bodily harm, a class 1 felony, according to court documents.

Several days earlier, Phares had a disagreement with a table of customers who used anti-gay slurs -- a confrontation that may have led to the attack in the parking lot of the other restaurant, a source told the Wisconsin Gazette. The incident caused Phares to voluntarily give his two weeks' notice, though he later changed his mind.

Ultimately, however, Phares said his manager at Applebee's asked him not to return after the incident. Dan Smith, a spokesman for Applebee's, disputed this accusation, telling The Huffington Post that the franchise group's CEO, Greg Flynn, contacted Phares and encouraged him to remain employed there.

Smith did confirm that Rien's wife, Shannon, continues to work at the restaurant alongside Phares, as she has not been charged with any crime and is not a suspect in the investigation.

This, however, was of no concern to angry customers who berated the Rice Lake Applebee's on Facebook. One user criticized the restaurant for still employing the woman allegedly involved in the parking lot incident, while another user, who claimed to be Phares' brother, defended the store, saying, "Applebee's in Rice Lake had nothing to do with this event. Our whole family enjoys this restaurant."

In an emailed statement to HuffPost, the Applebee's spokesman added:

This very unfortunate personal situation involving two of our franchisee's employees occurred during their free time and entirely away from the restaurant. The husband of one employee has been charged by police with felony assault. The police have informed us that this individual’s wife, who works at the restaurant, has not been charged and is not a subject in the investigation. The employee who was attacked is still employed with the franchisee. Although he had voluntarily resigned prior to the incident, the franchisee encouraged him to remain employed and he accepted that offer. Our franchisee continues to monitor the investigation and if there are any further developments related to any of its employees, it intends to evaluate the information and act accordingly.

Phares and the Hendrickses did not immediately respond to requests for comment from HuffPost.

DIY Therapy? In UK, Some Receive Mental Help Without Ever Seeing A Psychologist

LONDON — After crocheting a colorful blanket, Joan Ferguson snuggled up under it one night and proudly thought: "This is one groovy blanket. I'm brilliant."

Ferguson, 53, who struggles with low self-esteem, said it was the first time she had ever praised herself. She attributed the breakthrough in part to free self-help classes on mental health run by Britain's government-funded medical system.

With a long wait to see a psychologist, the British government is turning to the classroom to treat people with mild-to-moderate mental health problems with a mix of PowerPoint presentations and group exercises.

Ferguson's class of about 10 people, which meets once a week in east London, is led by two "psychological wellbeing practitioners." The instructors are trained for a year on how to help people change their behavior or thinking but they aren't fully fledged psychologists.

While some dismiss the approach as do-it-yourself therapy, experts say there is convincing evidence that people with conditions like depression and anxiety can be successfully treated without ever seeing a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

The strategy was adopted after Britain's independent health watchdog ruled that classes and self-help books are cost-effective. Treating people with mental health problems this way could get them back to work quicker and save the U.K. an estimated 700 million pounds in lost tax revenue over four years, a previous study found.

The government is aiming to use the classes to treat least 15 percent of the more than 6 million who need treatment for anxiety or depression. In 2011, only about 5 percent got some kind of therapy; about half were treated in classes or settings such as telephone sessions or computer therapy.

Those with more serious problems, like schizophrenia or post-traumatic stress disorder, are usually offered traditional psychotherapy.

The self-help classes have a recovery rate of about 46 percent, slightly lower than the 50 to 60 percent recovery rates for those who get personal psychological counseling, according to statistics from the department of health.

The British Psychological Society, a professional group, helped design the training received by the class instructors. The society's David Murphy, however, said the classes might not be a fit for everyone.

"Some people are wary about going to a class instead of seeing a psychologist," said Murphy, who isn't involved with the program.

The classes often require more effort by the individual than working with a psychologist, he said.

"For the (self-help) classes to be effective, the onus is on the patient to change what they're doing in between sessions," Murphy said.

Some American experts weren't sure the approach would work in the United States.

"The expectations of treatment are very different in the U.S.," said Michael Otto, a professor of psychology at Boston University who has studied self-help approaches. "People think, `if I'm going to be paying for care, I want to get the treatment I want and that's often personal therapy."

Otto said the downside to such self-help programs is that people who don't get better might just give up.

Instructor Nabila El-Zanaty said the classes aren't meant to be like group therapy.

"It's more like psychological education," she said, after leading a session that taught participants how to spot negative thoughts about themselves.

She said patients must be monitored closely in case they need more intensive help. At the start of every class, they fill in a survey about their recent behavior, including whether they have hurt themselves or had suicidal thoughts.

El-Zanaty said she's been surprised by how much the participants are willing to share in class. She said one woman who cried during every session and talked about suicide attempts was referred to personalized therapy.

Most courses run about eight to 12 weeks. El-Zanaty said they check in with participants a month after the classes end. After three months, they can apply to do another course if they still need help.

Ferguson and her classmates in El-Zanaty's course realize it's up to them to make sure the classes work.

"They only give us the tools," she said. "I know if I don't practice the techniques, it will be back to square one."

What is the best way to promote Amazon products?

I just signed up to become an affiliate at Amazon and want to know what is the best way to promote their products?
There are two ways.

1# First way is free and involves starting a FB fanpage and writing "notes". Tyoe notes in the Facebook search bar or download the free app and then start doing your research for available Amaon products to promote. The FB notes allow conten, images and basic HTML, so you can copy and paste your affiliate links and wrap them around your images and keyword links. Google and the main search engines index these pages and they are high ranked, but they can take up to six weeks to be indexed.

2# Start a review site or blog and look for Amazon product to promote in a niche you're familiar with. Find Amazon products which are selling, have good recent feedback and which have low competition or even limited data using the free Google keyword tool. Stick to this kind of formula and remeber the keywords of the products in your title and as your link.

If you find a formula that works then, it's always best to stick with it and especially if it serves you well.

All the best

Mark :)

Transform Your Blog To A Real Discussion Board Through Blog Commenting!

I read a lot on different blogs these days and one of the hot issues discussed by many bloggers is how to get more comments on blog posts and boost their social proof. Truth is, blog commenting is an important blogging activity with a wide range of goodies.

The unfortunate thing is the unbalance I have noticed all round the blogosphere. While most of the articles you read on blog commenting are focused on the site visitors, very little is being said to educate the post authors or blog owners.blog commenting

In this post, I want us to see how you can turn your blog to a real discussion board thereby encouraging repeat visits and improving your SEO through a positive increase in page impressions, return visits, page views and time on site. I’m not going to dwell on how to get more comments or why you don’t get comments. Instead let’s discuss what needs to be done to get your readers coming back for more interaction and blog commenting.

Write in a conversational tone as if you are having a discussion with a friend and always remember to give them space to speak. Don’t be like the Sunday preacher who should be listened to from the inception of his sermon to the end. Trigger response by asking questions and encouraging people to share their opinions in the comments. Don’t write like a robot.

Be human.

It’s one good thing to get your visitors to leave a comment and it’s yet another to get them back to engage in more exciting and productive conversation.

You need to provide the right tools that encourage blog commenting. Most blog commentators today want to be rewarded for leaving a comment on your blog. Don’t get me wrong. No one will ask for $1 Paypal transfer in order to leave a comment on your blog ;)

Today, CommentLuv premium has made this exercise an exciting one. With a huge list of advantages to the commentator, a majority of your readers will do a blog search looking for CommentLuv enabled blogs to leave comments on. Check this video from Ms. Ileane to see why.

BONUS VIDEO: CommentLuv with ReplyMe Plugin for WordPress

A lot of us are using the free version. There is nothing bad with that but if you want a higher speed, and more controls, get the full version (I don’t work for Andy Bailey by the way ;) )

If you are concerned about spam, be sure to install GASP the WordPress Comment Spam Plugin.

I hate captchas and so do many of us bloggers. Frankly speaking, there are times that I read some blog posts just to gain an understanding of the content so as to leave the required comments. Most often, captchas are some of the things that drive me off as soon as I land on the page.

You have to waste time trying to figure out what the twisted image is. If you are not accurate, you will have to restart the process and waste more time.

In fact, this is the reason I’m writing this post. It does not suffice to get readers to leave a comment and go for good. It’s your duty as author or blog owner to get readers back. You are not going to use some tools to trick or force them back to your blog. You are simply going to make them feel recognized and see a reason to come back to that same article in few ways:

Use ReplyMe plugin. If you have the latest version of CommentLuv, then you have the best and most updated copy of ReplyMe. What it does is simply send a mail to the comment author each time he gets a reply.Reply to your comments. Some bloggers don’t reply to comments. They must be big enough not to pay attention to comments on their blogs. However, if you want to reap the benefits of blog commenting as a blog owner, you cannot afford not to reply to comments.Converse and ask questions in your replies. As a blogger, I know you hate comments like “great post”, “Thanks for sharing”, “I enjoyed reading this”, etc. Now, as a commentator, I also hate when you reply to my comments saying things like  ”Thanks for commenting”, “Thanks for stopping by” , “Thanks for reading”, etc. You really don’t want me back , do you?Recommend some other articles in your replies. This works well. I have tested and seen results. If you point to some other resources for your readers in the comment box, they always come back to check.Some bloggers will love to be featured on your blog as top commentators. I have personally noticed this as one of the reasons some readers are consistently commenting on some blogs. Why not provide a widget for your top commentators?Now one last crazy idea is to randomly select the commentator of the month and reward him or her. That sounds crazy but can take blog commenting on your blog to a higher height.

Are you reaping the benefits of blog commenting? Do you get your readers coming back to reply to comments? Is your blog a real discussion board?  Please share your thoughts in the comment box.

Buying Domains W/ heavy traffic

Hi Guys,

I've been a member on this site for a few years now but I haven't posted or been on since about that time. One of my questions is....

Can you make money with parked domain names?

I have read articles that you can but some have said expect it to be little as a few pennies per day then some have said they make hundreds of dollars per month with 1 parked domain.

The way, I'm looking at it is if you can make $50 per month with 1 and have several others due the same, your in business.

but correct me if I'm wrong, the domain names already have to have traffic to them so that people will click on the advertisements that's provided by the parking provider, is that right?

If that's the case, my best bet is to look for "Domains" for a pretty cheap price at auction whether it be expiring or someone is putting it up for auction themselves.

Please give me your honest opinions and stories.

Thanks

Jon Stewart's NBC Joke: Mocks Network Over 'Tonight Show', Ratings (VIDEO)

During his segment on Egyptian TV host Bassem Youssef on Monday, Jon Stewart took a pointed swipe at NBC, defending Jay Leno in the process.

While the joke was an unrelated gag intended to lighten the tone of a fairly heavy segment, Stewart didn't throw it away either. He equated NBC with a failed, dictatorial empire and then noted, "A couple of bloggers just went nuts."

We assume he was referring to someone else. Watch the clip above.

Since being gay is a choice, I decided when I woke up today I would be straight. Here's what happened.

8 am: I wake up. My alarm clock is blaring "Toxic" by Britney Spears and I quickly turn it off. Yesterday, when I was a homosexual, I most likely would have enjoyed such music, but today I'd prefer sleeping with Britney Spears than actually listening to anything she has to say or sing.

8:15 am: I pour myself a cup of coffee and go into my bathroom to prepare for my day. I take a peep around the medicine cabinet and notice that there seem to be an endless amount of hair products, body lotion, fragrances and a big bottle of something called "gun oil." I have no idea what to do with any of these products so I splash some water on my face, run my fingers through my hair and I am ready to go.

8:23 am: After conquering the bathroom, I walk into my kitchen to find something to eat for breakfast. I search the refrigerator for something edible, but all I can find is non-fat yogurt, egg whites and whole-wheat English muffins. I skip breakfast; grab my gym bag and head out the door.

8:46 am: On the subway, I thumb through the New York Daily News to see what's going on in the world. Apparently, the lady from Hocus Pocus is doing some sort of one-woman show. This probably would have piqued my interest yesterday, when I was sleeping with guys, but today I am simply confused by it. I flip to the sports pages and instead of finding out who won the big game last night, I realize that football has been over for months and baseball still hasn't started yet. I suppose I could feign an interest in hockey, but even I don't care for that very much. It's a tough to be a straight guy these days.

9:04 am: I grab a donut and head into my office. As I walk by my co-workers, they stare at me as if I had come to work drunk. They're probably confused because today I am straight so I am not wearing a flashy tie or a pocket square. Instead, I am wearing the beat up suit I wore to my college graduation, socks that don't match and a shirt that had some sort of pink stain on it (possibly from my ill-fated attempt at making homemade blueberry muffins the other day, when I was gay.)

10:52 am: My lesbian sister calls. She asks why I am straight today and I ask her why she continues to think that homosexuality is genetic.

12:09 pm: My alleged "best bud" at work, a male homosexual named Pete comes into my office and asks if I want to have lunch at some place called "The Out Hotel." I opt not to and instead go to a sports bar. I eat a lunch that consists of chicken fingers and French fries. The bartender brings me a Diet Coke and I nearly lose my shit. Suddenly, I have lost the taste for artificial sweetener and almost lose my lunch. I try to find some highlight show to watch on TV but there's nothing going on except college basketball and while I may be straight today, even that bores the shit out of me.

1:23 pm: I'm back in my office and Pete comes in looking disheveled. When I ask him what happened in the past hour, he proceeds to tell me that we need to have "girl talk" later and exits my office. I wonder why two grown men would be speaking like girls and ignore Pete altogether.

2:32 pm: I start to notice the receptionist is a little bit more and go over to speak to her. Apparently her name is Robin, and when I ask her out on a date she asks me if we will be having flirtinis and going on a manhunt like the last time we went out. Apparently, I am going to have to change jobs if I am going to be straight because all of the women in the office and I seem to be lifelong friends and are not interested in me sexually.

5:01 pm: I head to the gym after work. Upon entering; I hear loud techno music and the only people I see around me are extremely well toned men. I begin to wonder if this gym serves champagne because I feel like I am in a club.

5:46 pm: As I am doing squats at the gym, a Latino gentleman named Tito comes over to me and asks me why I never called him back the other day. I tell him that I am straight today and he laughs in my face. He smacks my ass when he walks away and says something about how I was a firecracker in the bedroom. I feel alone and scared.

6:47 pm: I decide that since I am straight now, I will go to a singles bar to see if I can pick up a girl. I order a beer and stand in the corner and look around the room but all I see are couples -- everywhere. I ask the bartender if I am actually at a singles bar and he tells me that yes, I am but I have come late because happy hour is over in thirteen minutes and everyone has already paired up for the evening.

8:26 pm: I get home and decide to watch some TV, but the only things I have saved on my DVR are taped episodes of Revenge, Glee and The View. Apparently, straight me and gay me have very different taste in television so I opt to watch reruns of CSI because it's the only thing on my television that seems remotely entertaining, which isn't saying much.

10:09 pm: I brush my teeth and while I am, I notice the anti-wrinkle cream in my cabinet. I wonder why I would ever need that and close the vanity after I am done washing up.

10:15 pm: I lie in my bed and pray that when I wake up tomorrow, I will want to be gay again. Being straight is tough and I wouldn't wish it on even my worst enemy.
